Recommended Customer Reviews
Want reliability, quality of workmanship, solid American parts? I highly recommend Master's Service Plumbing in Arlington VA. Lyman Stutzman knows his business, inside and out, and he understands the value of high quality parts, responsive service, and careful work. I have used him many times over the past 15 years and will always recommend him to friends and neighbors. You should try him.
Matt M.I was taking off the trap to the drain in my bathroom's sink, and a plastic part broke. I got a replacement at the local hardware store and although it was the right size, it would not fit due to a difference in threading. I went by Home Depot but it did not have the right parts. I called Master Services Plumbing, and he came within a half hour and fixed it. It was not inexpensive, but it was a Saturday, I had guests arriving the next day, and I was desperate. I had a great experience.
Lyman came to my business in April to fix a toilet that wasn't working. He promised to come back and finish working on another one and we never heard from him. I called him again over the weekend (now October) to come out to fix the toilet that was truly not flushing now and he said he'll come out Monday. No Lyman! I called Tuesday and he complained about parking near my business. I suggested an easy fix. He shows up, does the job in less that 20 minutes (not counting the time he went back out to his car to get his tools) and charged me $650 claiming he hadn't charged me the $400 from April. If someone owed me $400 I'd certainly collect it! I had no way of proving we didn't or did owe it as my manager handled it. He charged $90 service that was not deducted from the total bill on top of his $160 an hour (cause he rounds up his 20 minute job to an hour). His energy is so bad and he is so negative he will never set foot in my space again. there are too many other plumbers I can call to fix a non flushing toilet for $700 in Arlington.
So! Update! The toilet he ""fixed"" 2 days later no longer flushed properly and then continued to constantly run. I will not call him and will have to pay for another plumber. There are too many other people looking to do good, honest work to waste time on this guy.
Lyman is great to work with - kind and honest. Definitely my go-to person for any plumbing issues from now on!
We contacted him about a leak in our tub faucet. The hot water faucet would spurt water onto the floor every time we used it and we needed plyers to turn it on and off. I sent him pictures and he told me the brand was American Standard and he could easily get replacement parts. So we scheduled a time for him to make the repair and he ordered the parts. Easy enough.
He came out to repair the tub faucet and he replaced the parts. It looked great! However, there was one issue, the water wouldn't turn off and the knobs kept turning around and around. he actually made our issue worse! He told me that the reason was the replacement parts weren't the greatest. His solution was to install a shut off on the shower head and to turn off the flow of water to the tub by tunring on the shower and then using the new shut off to turn off the water.
I told him I didn't want some half ass solution. I wanted to turn the water on and off with the tube faucets like a normal person. He said he would look into getting some other parts, but most likely I would have to replace the entire thing at an additional $1000!
After he left and charged me $433 for making my tub worse. I called manufacturer and found out you can add a couple washers to the valve stem to fix the issue. I call the plumber to tell him the solution. He said he would still go get some additonal parts and try both. The a couple days later I emailed him
""When do you anticipate being able to fix the tub faucets? We now have to turn off the hot water heater in order to get the water in the tub to stop flowing. We just want the faucets to work as they did before, but without the leak. Also, will we have to pay to fix the faucets? Thanks""
His response was ""As discussed at the Service call, the repair kit was able to improve the leak and operation of the faucet. However, due to the 50+ year old faucet age, the repair parts are not specifically available and are generic - don't repair 100%.
I will not process your credit until we get this resolved.
If you wish to have no leakage your only option is to replace the entire faucet. My price will be $1,000.00 to install a Central Brass three handle.
If you want to try doubling the friction washer, it may or may not work, but my time is not free.""
So he messed up my tub, sold me shotty parts, and then wanted to charge me to fix it or charge me another $1000 to replace everything!
I got pissed watched a you tube video, bought 3 brass washers for 89 cents, and fixed the faucet myself. Now it works perfectly with no leak.
Bottom line is this the plumber found and ordered the shotty parts, did the work, made my tub situation worse, and I had to fix his work due to his crappy customer service. To top it all off I he charged me $433 for it.
Lyman is a true professional. We own an older home in Arlington and have used him twice over the last year. He is very responsive (and good with email) and timely for appointments. He also takes the time to thoroughly explain what caused the plumbing issue & detail the steps taken to fix. Highly recommended.
Joseph K.I called Lyman at Master's Service for a quote to replace two PRVs in my condo unit that had started leaking.
As the other reviewers have said, Mr. Stutzman is very friendly, knowledgeable, efficient, and capable at his job. He also offered me a very fair price to do the job which I appreciated.
He cares greatly about performing work that not only fixes the issue but also will help to prevent future fixes.
He came on time, assessed the problem, and got right to work on resolving my issue in about an hour.
He explained to me in detail what he was doing to help me understand the reasoning behind the leak and how his fix would address the problem.
He offered to come back for free if anything went wrong from the fix.
Unfortunately, he did have to come back to tighten one of the PRVs as the initial level of tightness was allowing a slight drip to form an hour or so after he left. I would have provided 5 stars if the fix had worked the initial visit.
He came back this morning to tighten up the PRV and now it is as good as new.
Other than that minor rework, I am very satisfied with the services I received.
I will definitely reach out to him again in the future if I need his services.
Robert S.Lyman Stutzman of Master's Service Plumbing has been our go-to plumber for over two decades. It's great to have a key home service provider who you can really know -- rather than have to rely on a plumbing company which always sends a different representative to your home when you need repairs. Lyman is a true craftsman of his profession. His company name says it all. He has encyclopedic knowledge of plumbing from the 1940s forward and the many changes in materials and fixtures that have ensued. He is up to date on many new offerings in the plumbing world. He this week enlightened us on the availability now of sump pump backup systems that are powered by the home's water pressure. If your home's electricity cuts off during a rainstorm and your electric sump pump stops working, this new system will kick in to prevent your sump from overflowing and damaging possessions in your basement. How cool is that! No need for expensive backup battery systems to keep your electric sump pump running. And this system also will kick in if your electric sump pump dies at some point (which they all do). Lyman hates sloppy plumbing work -- and he sees much of that when he's called out to fix residential plumbing problems. He may not be the person to call if you have an immediate plumbing catastrophe that requires immediate attention. But for long-term plumbing solutions that will be worry free for years, he's the guy to call in Arlington.
Kirk S.I can't speak to the quality of their work - I couldn't get a straight answer out of them to even schedule it.
Long story short, I contacted this place for a quick same-day fix - not an emergency, but willing to pay for the short notice because I wouldn't be home for a long time after. The call wasn't exactly helpful - I tried to explain the situation, but got the impression that they only wanted pictures and didn't much care for what I had to say. So I sent them, asking for a price and timeframe.
And waited.
And waited.
And no response for a few hours. Zero. I had to literally pester them via email to get a response - which was basically ""we have a policy of not doing non-emergency work on weekends."" Of course, this policy was not explained when I initially described the issue or sent pictures - only when I had to pester.
Their competition sat on the phone for 30 minutes discussing the problem with me, offering temporary solutions, and providing a hard price quote with an explanation of where the number came from. In other words, there are much, much better places to go than here.
Mr. Stutzman is very friendly and very knowledgeable about his job. I needed a rebuild for one of the toilets. Mr. Stutzman arrived 10 mins earlier, explained the cause of the problem and the tasks he was going to perform, and finished the job in about 45 minutes. He voluntarily offered to come back for free later if anything went wrong. Of course, that never happened. Besides the outstanding service, the price he charged was also very reasonable, slightly below the average of a few other quotes I got. I really appreciate his integrity.
I highly recommend Mr. Stutzman's service especially if you live in Arlington, VA (he has lived here for around 30 years), and would not hesitate to hire him again in the future.
