I moved to Southern California in 1992, leaving my position as a grocery store manager. I took a position as a lot attendant at a Home Depot in Escondido, where I was hired in the parking lot for my first plumbing job, earning $0.25 more per hour. I started as a laborer with a major commercial plumbing firm specializing in new construction. I attended night classes and applied my management skills to the plumbing field, quickly advancing to foreman, then project manager, and ultimately becoming a licensed plumbing contractor. I gained experience with several plumbing companies, working in commercial, custom home, and residential service and repair sectors. When the economy shifted and I faced a layoff, I tapped into my network and began providing plumbing for custom home construction in 2002. Today, Marklein Plumbing specializes in residential new construction, remodels, and a highly skilled service, repair, and drain cleaning operation.
