Sean H.Around the beginning of the Month of January, 2022, we started searching for HVAC companies to replace our furnace, which was not keeping up with the thermostat, and it was very cold inside. Upon contacting various companies, Main & Sons was the first to offer an in-home estimate. This is where the bad review starts:
It took a week to get someone here to do the estimate, which was fine, as they said they'd been busy. Once here, the technician was courteous enough, and seemed to know what he was doing. Upon leaving, I was informed that someone would contact me with an estimate. Someone DID contact me the following Monday, wherein they gave me the estimate through email.
On their own website, it says to ask about the makes and models and serial numbers of any product used in the job, so I replied with those questions. Not only did I receive a poorly worded response, but it was one sentence, explaining that when the installer got the info to them, they'd get the info to us. It took two weeks for them to come up with the make and model of JUST the furnace. Meanwhile, we had been struggling to keep our house warm the entire time.
Maybe I could have and should have contacted more companies, because when we finally had enough of being cold, we contacted another company, who had the estimate done the next day, and the new furnace installed the following day.
Here's the thing. Don't give estimates if you don't have a clue what is actually in the estimate, and, if a prospective customer says they are cold, you find a way to help, or you IMMEDIATELY decline to do the job. Simple as that. I will absolutely never be using this company for anything.
Main & Sons has been doing work for us for years. From sump pumps to water heaters to leaking pipes, they have taken care of everything! They have come out on a snowy Sun evening, when I'm certain they would rather be at home with their own families to take care of an emergency. They are always professional and get the work done quickly. Once, while they were doing some work at our house, my young daughter had a medical emergency. The two Main & Sons employees that were at our house were incredibly helpful and kind. They offered to drive cars to the ER for us as we went in the ambulance, and they made sure our dogs were secure and the house was locked up. They have gone above and beyond for us.
Joanna H.Our upstairs AC went out in the middle of a heat wave, and Main & Sons was the only HVAC company available to come and check it out within the next couple of days. I was extremely happy when they called later than afternoon (a day before the scheduled appointment) and told me that they had time to come by and check out our HVAC. When they showed up, they were definitely ""less than professional"" looking (hole-filled jeans/shorts, clothing stained in general, huge wads of dip in their mouths, and too-large t-shirts with the sleeves ripped off). The technicians were polite enough, but they didn't really communicate outside of ""We're going to look at your unit,"" and, ""We can't get it to work, so we're going to install another one"" unless I asked a direct question first. They tried everything they could to revive the unit, but said the compressor was out. I was informed that the entire system needed replaced (the compressor & coils), and I related that I wanted to upgrade to a more efficient unit. The tech told me what type of unit he'd be putting in, not listening to any of my requests or input. He even seemed disinterested in what I had to say - he'd made up his mind as soon as he realized the compressor was bad. He told me he'd ""be back that evening"" with a cost estimate, but he never returned. My husband had to call the office the next day to find out what the quote was. We finally received the estimate through the mail a week later, and the estimate was very lacking in detail - ""Estimate to install a 95% efficient A/C System. Condensing unit is 2.0 ton 13 seer system. Includes materials, labor and tax."" At no time in the process did anyone offer details as to brand, a detailed price breakdown, anything. We had no input as to what system was to be installed, nor did they offer any options. The technician provided us with a quote that was $1000 over all of the other quotes we received. They were less than professional, didn't feel the need to communicate with me about any of the decisions involved in a major purchase, and got back to us a week after they said they would. I would not recommend them to anyone.
In July 2014, my 83 year old mother called Main for a slow kitchen sink drain. She was quoted an estimate of $95.00. When the plumber arrived, he said he needed something he didn't have with him. Really?! Not prepared for something so common? So he returned to fetch what he needed. Her house is 7 blocks from the plumber's office. He returned and cleared the drain. She received a bill for $225.00. Mom went to the plumber in person. He was told she was charged 2 trip charges. The most they would reduce the bill to was $125.00. That is despicable!
