Scam and criminal. There is always something stopping him from finishing the job. His uncle dies, his car get broken into, emergency happens. They guy into a fight on the job, broke my ceiling twice, overcharged me thousands of dollars and never showed up. I am pressing charges and reporting him to the authorities.
STAY AWAY! Total scammer. Overcharged us for a simple project and failed to even complete it. He spent most of the day away ""getting supplies"" and charged us $1000 for a grand total of 2 hours and quickly left right after without any notice. We then pointed out the job was unfinished and he said he would return to complete it but obviously never did. We asked another plumber we know and said he overcharged us by at least 300%.
STAY AWAY from Michael Hughes, MH Mechanical, and Fourth Generation Mechanical.
He came to replace a broken toilet last week, spent a few minutes fiddling with it and told us we had a special kind of toilet and he didn't have time to get what he needed to do it that day (since he'd arrived hours later than he said he would--that on its own wouldn't be a big deal). He requested half of the money up front, via cash app, not check. He said he'd be back the next day and disappeared, we haven't been able to reach him again. We got scammed, shame on us.
Total scam. Left us without heat in freezing conditions for three weeks. Now won't return our calls and changed his number. Will be contacting the BBB. I hope others do the same.
SCAM! I am taking legal action. If you have been scammed by Michael Hughes, Keith Gass, or his girlfriend Kerri contact the police and file a criminal report. Call Norfolk country district attorney office at 781-830-4800 or Quincy office 617-769-6100 to get you in touch with a victims advocate and place you on the victims list so when he is charged you may get your money back.
I hired him to install a tankless water heater on my property. We came into a signed business agreement contract to pull permits, and paid a deposit of $2175. FYI- Paying a deposit for unfinished work totaling more than 1/3 of the total cost of the project is illegal in MA.
He told me he was a licensed plumber and always had an excuse when I asked for his license number. He is not licensed at all under the licensing.mass.gov website, and per the Boston Globe article he has multiple judgements against him in Boston, and Quincy district court. He never pulled permits or emailed me the receipts for the supplies like he said he was. Since he took the deposit I never heard from him a=ever again.
He works under multiple names and business names. He uses different phone numbers to contact me. Apparently he changes his number frequently. See below

DO NOT pay his Venmo account @Michael-Hughes-296
Unfortunately, this was my first home project and didn't know any better and found out all this information after I suspected fraud and deceptive behavior. File a 93A in small claims court and a police report if you have already paid him and he won't return you money.
Ryan L.This guy is a scam. I sent him a venmo for 175 not knowing any reviews until i saw this and also had some situations that i could no longer do the 175. I then asked for the refund. I have a baby and really need disposal installed. When asking for refund he said he needed to return the part. That was fine then he said it didnt credit back to his account. So then i go to my mail box today 4 days later its just a receipt of the invoice and no refund and now im out 175 and no disposal. Thanks alot for nothing
Horrible rip off artist. Crew may come by 11 & leave by 3. They are all drunks & dont know what they are doing. Just needed a kitchen sink replaced & they ruined my counter. They knew they ruined it because they hid all the mistakes, took my check & ran to the bank. Had to replace counter cuz they chipped it up all around the sink, and left it sitting on a drawer. Not fastened. Then when i called to complain his girlfriend Kelly (the 1 good review) is nasty & u can never get hold of him again. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Do not use this guy!!! No license, no knowledge, criminal intent.
The job was to remove existing boiler ductwork, boiler cleanout, and install wall extractor fan and a short run of ductwork back in 2014. Michael estimated the job would take a few hours. It took 4 days to attempt to complete the job which was abandoned in a very dangerous state. He used to advertise on thumbtack which suddenly was inundated with very negative reviews. They dropped him for nonpayment and now all those negative reviews are no longer available. He actually took time to respond to those poor people's reviews with nasty comments and denials. He will point the finger at the customer when he fails and try to extort more money from you. It just amazes me that he tries to run a plumbing company.
I ended up hiring a real Professional contractor at half the cost who used the correct specified more expensive fan (SWG-5) and double walls ducts and it took 3 hours to complete. They also cleaned and serviced the boiler using the correct tools and meters. Michael (MH Mechanical) is not a real heating contractor.
* He didn't show up Day 1 but send 2 confused warm bodies who proceeded to remove the entire existing boiler duct work. They didn't have any new parts to start the job so they scrambled to refashion the crumbled ductwork to get my boiler running again so that I could have heat. One full Saturday wasted. Left everything covering in soot.
* They spend two more days trying to install the new extractor fan (wrong part) and new duct work (wrong duct). I had to take 2 days off work to be there.
* Mike eventually arrived late on the final day (after many calls) and started making a parts list. He charged an extra $350 on top of the original quote of $1650. It's hard to argue with this guy when you have no heat (extortion).
* He cleaned the boiler but it failed after 24 hours. He refused to come out to finish the job unless I considered spending $7000 on a new boiler. He told me my boiler was finished. It's till running today!!
* The ductwork was disguised to look like it was connected to the extractor fan on the outside wall. He installed a piece of sheet metal just to hide the gap where fumes were entering my house. The professional contractor told me that I was lucky the house didn't burn down or that we didn't get poisoned from fume inhalation.
* He used single wall dusts which didn't meet code and were too close to combustible material (wooden joists).
* He used the wrong fan (SWG-4HD) for my boiler and overcharged for it (800). Part cost $369 at Home Depot.
* He left the power switch connection sitting in what looked like a connected position at the fan. It fell out when the contractor was changing it.
* He re-used my old power switch unit. Didn't buy a new one.
F R.His heating work nearly killed us with exhaust coming into the house. He used the wrong size exhaust and we had to replace the entire thing - using a reputable local contractor - we lost a couple thousand dollars and reported this guy to the State. Doing a search online for other work, I could not believe me eyes that this Mike Hughes is still out ripping people off. Jeez go to tech school or something and get yourself licensed. Reading other reviews - con man is right.
I've been reviewing on Yelp for years, look at miss five star lady's record
It's funny how it says this company closed but the same guy keeps going under different names. I was a recent victim of a scam. Guy came out quoted me to expose drain and install tip to waste and reconnect pipe while liquor smelled on his breath. He then was getting frustrated and put up a rubber bandaid that would last until a couple days. Well wrong it poured water even worse. He took off with my money that night but wanted to come back to get more the next couple days. He might be a nice guy but hes a thief. He now goes under the name Michael's Mechanical. Would give no rating if it allowed me too. Dont fall into his trap he wanted to cut open my walls rip the sink out and do all this useless work. I may be out some money but lesson learned I had a real plumber come that had tools and did the job for a quarter of what this fake plumber wanted
