Despite being a former Lights fan, I am now forced to give them a low rating due to recent experience. Our rental management company called them a day or two before Christmas 2024 to handle a simple clog.
Before I explain current rating, let me say this. Jason Light had been to this property for the exact same clogged area several years earlier. At that time within a short time he determined that the old 1950s 2"" galvanized pipe terminated just below a toilet flange in the basement. He removed the toilet, cleared the clog, and replaced the toilet. He gave a reasonable price and we were happy.
This time, albeit right at Christmas, one of his technicians came out. That representative tried a simpler approach and failed to clear the clog. TOTAL FAILURE!!! According to the tenant, that visit left the clog worse. They also billed for the service despite failing to improve the drainage in any way. To add insult the management company passed on Lights estimate of $4326 to tear out and replace that section of line. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?
After getting this news, I called Jason to discuss. After he talked to the technician, he contacted me back to tell me that a section of the line was corroded out. I might add that Jason should have immediately offered to come see the problem or otherwise address. Instead he stated that Lights was on a big job and would not be available for two weeks.
I then called other plumbers instead of trusting the first prognosis from Lights. Well, this is where I lost total faith in Lights. The other plumbers replaced the line an unclogged for less than $750. In fact, the clogged area was freed within 10 minutes of arrival and only cost $300. The replacement portion did not even need doing, but I asked for it to be done of my own accord. There was no corrosion in the line.
Jason will undoubtedly recognize this property and the situation. It pains me to place this review because I really liked his work several years ago. I have not called him back for the third time for this instance, because he told me he was too busy to get back to me for two weeks anyway. Despite two calls back to him he gave me no assurance or initiative that he would stand behind his company's work. I have removed Lights from property management calls to any property I own. There are plenty other options. Please see my review of at least one better company. That other company was awesome, and has records on the property to avoid overcharging and/failure in the future.
I really do hate ripping a small business, but facts are facts. I can just see an older or more naive customer getting shafted by such practices. I hope this plumber will at very least improve their customer service and communication game.
I'm not happy because of the time and money it cost me to install my bathtub. Had to hire other people to help with additional work needed.
We had an outdoor spigot that started leaking, necessitating
turning off the main water supply to the entire house. We were given an estimate of $800+, including the removal of a kitchen cabinet on the wall to get to the line supplying the spigot. The next morning the crew returned and I pointed out to them that removal of the cabinet was not necessary as the supply line (above the ceiling, it's an old house) was not over the cabinet as measurements I had taken showed the location. A hole was cut in the ceiling, the pipe was there, he cut it, the outside spigot was pulled out and a new one with cheap PVC pipe was put in, (the rest of theline is a copper pipe). They didn't even clean up the mess they left on my counter, even tracking the old drywall (plaster coated) on my floor when they went out the door. This is not service! Not even close! We were told we would be charged the entire $800+, but later the owner texted and said they wouldn't charge the second $424 as I had given them a $429 deposit. This rating is not one star, it is one tenth of a star. The Yelp website says I am in San Francisco, I would not go to San Francisco if you gave me 10 million dollars, I live just outside Lynchburg VA. The business owner and I exchanged texts, they did reduce the price, but that doesn't make up for the terrible experience we had. There are other reviews complaining about their high prices for a little bit of work. I am just adding my name and thoughts to that list.
Libi O.We were pleased with the prompt response we got from Lights after we requested an estimate. The price was higher than we wanted to pay but, we realize that we are paying for knowledge as well as the physical labor, so we gladly paid half as a deposit. We were told that the gentleman would come back on Tuesday morning to make the repair. So, we waited on Tues and about 11 am, we call and ask an ETA. Rudely, he says ""I'll get to you"", we ask if he has any idea of when and he says no. So, being that we had to be at work at noon, we had to call in and take the day off. 1 pm comes around and we call back as we haven't heard anything and haven't been able to leave the house either, so wasting an entire morning and afternoon. At 1 he has no idea who we are or what we need. He didn't have us scheduled whatsoever and he's the one that made the appointment. So now he says he can come at 7 pm, well, we have two very small children who are in bed by then, so that wouldn't work, plus there was no way that I was going to open myself up to get an after hours charge. So he says he will come between 12-2 the next day, so that means another day of no work. So for a job that took less than 30 mins, it costs us the amount of the job plus 2 days of our work. We were given $100 off the job, but 2 days of work is worth more than $100. I called the number and wanted to speak with the owner and was told by the receptionist I'd receive a call from Jason, the owner. That was a week ago and no word. The work performed was fine but the road to getting it done was unprofessional.
Great response time, fixed the problem much sooner than anyone else said they could even come out and take a look at it! A little pricey but it did fix the issue.
DONT WALK, RUN AWAY!!!!
had an issue with our toilet and washing machine that was in the addition of our home. only the addition had issues.
when i called i was assured that i would be told the cost of the service before any work would be completed. upon arriving home from work (they were several hrs late) I find that they have already racked up a $480 dollar bill for me with intentions of doing another $500 of service without informing me.
fast forward a few days later when i went to use the plumbing on the addition, nothing was fixed and there were fecal handprints and fecal covered tools left behind. we waited a few days as we had family in town but eventually, we called back and pleaded with the office worker that the techs do not bill us until we know what we'd be paying for. again, we were assured this would happen. once again, when i arrived home the work had been done and i was handed a bill. this time for 250 dollars.
the next day we found the plumbing to once again not be operable
on top of all this both techs got lippy with my wife when she asked them simple questions about what was going on
they were condescending
rude and they raised their voices toward her
after 2 attempts to get ahold of Jason and all he did was make excuses for his techs and the level of service i was provided. he did not acknowledge the disrespect the techs showed my wife and i nor did he acknowledge the fecal matter left behind by his people.
his main goal was to shut me down and offer to come back out and do additional work claiming the line is clogged again because of scale (this is the service i declined as it was additional $500) tell me how that toilet is clogged after one or two uses when all i do is pee in it cause he cant..
I guess im out nearly 750 bucks.
Mary H.Prompt response to an email we sent on a Sunday afternoon, not expecting to hear back until Monday, but they responded literally within minutes. They came out on Monday afternoon, assessed the problem, and scheduled an appointment for Wednesday to fix it. They showed up bright and early Wednesday as scheduled and fixed the problem. They were absolutely a pleasure to work with. It was especially refreshing since we had been calling and emailing multiple companies just trying to find someone who would be able to do what we needed done and that services Nelson County. Couldn't be happier with their customer service, professionalism, and pricing. Thank you so much!
Christine S.We used Light's Plumbing when our dishwasher had dirty water in the bottom of the dishwasher. We had just moved in that week and it was Friday after hours, knew it would be expensive on weekend, but it was outrageous. He uses a flat rate system and charged us over $400 for about a half hour of work snaking the sink, one pass. I'm writing this review on yelp to make sure peopke ask ahead of time roughly how long they anticipate it will take to do the job and what the rate is. Jason, likes to answer the many reviews he has regarding the outrageous fees, by stating its after hours, ""pay by the job, not by the hour"", and that it takes years to train plumbers to do their job and the equipment is extremely expensive. The owner of this company has justified on reviews of his rates that it takes 10 years to be able to complete 10 minute snaking jobs and the equipment is extremely expensive. It also takes 10 years to become a doctor and $200,000 in schooling, much in student loans, and rarely get paid $450 for a half hour of work. I'm sure as a plumber this business owner is uninterested in the doctor's student loans, the same way your customers don't want to hear about how much training it takes to do 10 minutes of snaking so that is why you charge what you charge.
I am from a northeast suburb of a major city and I can I assure you your rates are over inflated for Central rural Virginia.
Read the reviews. It's really easy for friends and acquaintances to give a 5 star, one or two sentence review.
Buyer Beware
Jason and his crew very reasonable and respectful. My calls were always returned in a timely manner. Once they showed up to do the work scheduled. They kept me included in everything they saw and were doing. Jason even sat in the torrential downpour for at least 2 hours getting the job done. If that doesn't say commitment then I don't know what does.
Joe D.The guys who came did a good job. However, I was absolutely shocked when they gave me a bill for $305.00 for a job that took them 10 min to do. It would have been nice had they told me before they started the job that I was going to be paying $100 for each 3.5 min of work they did.
