21 years ago I moved into my house in Phoenicia. first time home owner. I wasn't stupid, but living in rentals until then it was landlord problems.
water flow was weak, my cuz from woodstock thought it was a pressure tank issue which I told gene (my site is not on town water; well), gene went to basement, tested a couple things then said I needed a deep well pump replacement. ""And how much is that? $2000 probably, depends on the depth"" I still don't know why when I still had water he would tell me that, and not even make a bit more money starting with that as part of the service call. He did not.
yeah ok. bye, $45 for the visit. he was trying to fleece the guy from out of town.... So, in the circa 21 years here, I've done most of my plumbing, electrical, roof repairs, etc. I know when I need experienced people, and know enough people to ask who they like and trust.
A few months later i meet Andre, a well driller at the time, told him this same story. He came by, drained and repressurized the tank, all fixed. Bought him a few beers and a shot in town, and that was done. No other fee. And, we remained buds when we ran into each other.
Message? Know enough before he or his boys come by to see if you're getting his special new comers treatment.
(And, still on same pump, new pressure tank when another man I like, van Kleek replaced it for me and enjoyed asking if I was a communist, or some hippie from woodstock....)
We couldn't be happier with Knoth. Gene was actually my plumber in the city before he moved up here, and I think once or twice he actually came down to help me out. We've been weekenders since 2002 and full-timers since last year and Knoth plumbing has been reliable and efficient each time they were called. Recently had a major installation of 2 split units (Fujitsu a/c and heat). We had a great experience. They were thorough, cleaned up when finished, carefully explained how to use the system and did a stellar job in general. Couldn't recommend them more highly.
Roger C.We had a problem with one of our 2 air handlers and were not getting heat to half of our home in the regular fashion. We thought it might be electrical related as it happened at the same time as we had some electrical work done which entailed moving fuses around in the panel and some double gang (?) fuses being added. The electrician couldn't identify the problem and could not resolve it. Nor could a second electrician. So our temporary ""fix"" was to turn the air handler on/off via the fuse box. We called our plumber who could not resolve it either; however, he suggested we contact Knoth which we did. Gene came out and spent a great deal of time in troubleshooting the issue. He then looked at the second air handler to see how it was wired and set up (something the other electricians and the plumber did not do, oddly enough). During this process, he explained everything he was doing, and his line of thought. This seemed to be something that nobody was going to be able to solve, yet Gene nailed it and got us back our much needed heat. He was on time, reliable, courteous, explained everything he did, and was very fair in his pricing.
Flash forward 2 years and one of our 2 central A/C units was not running. The unit is about 18 years old, but hardly ever run (don't you love the nice, cool Catskill summers?) yet it seemed that it was near the end of its serviceable life. We called Knoth and they scheduled an appointment for us. We got a confirmation call from Michelle in advance of the appointment stating that Kyle was coming out in the morning. Kyle was prompt, and just like Gene, a consummate professional who took the time to explain his troubleshooting, and action plan, in thorough detail to this layman. He completed his work thoroughly, and timely and now we have nice cold air again for those occasional humid days.
I highly recommend this company and they will be our HVAC go-to from here into the future. If you want good, reliable, professional, courteous service, this is the firm to reach out to. I don't understand the negative reviews other than suggesting that it's human nature more to complain than it is to praise; it's on the order of ""if you do right by a customer, they'll tell a friend; if you don't do right by a customer, they'll tell 10 friends"". My praise of Knoth is earned, and well deserved.
Zack B.I was hoping to get an energy audit with Knoth Plumbing. After they canceled our first long-scheduled appointment at the last minute, they showed up and did the energy audit in April 2019. Despite many emails and calls requesting the audit over the past seven months, they have yet to deliver the report. I even contacted New York State (which funded the report). They don't answer their phone or respond to emails. Very poor customer service. I highly recommended you avoid this company.
Knoth's team and Gene Knoth has been very courteous, helpful, responsible and punctual. You can trust this team of dedicated people.
This company is terrible. My boiler was malfunctioning so I called and they sent a tech out. The tech changed some nozzles, charged me $160 and left. About 5 weeks later, the boiler malfunctioned again, same tech came out, replaced more parts, charged me $250 and left. The tech was a younger man who said to me if it didn't work after that he would have to have his boss come and look at it next time. 3-4 weeks after that, guess what...yup...another malfunction. I call Knoth assuming I would get the more experience tech, based on what the other tech said to me, but instead, the same guy shows up, replaces more parts, charges me $165 and leaves.
A couple weeks go by and it shuts down again, so I call a different company who comes out and says, ""whoever you had here last had no idea what they were doing. The electrodes are way off (one was against the end cone of the burner and never would have fired) and the pump is defective and can't pull prime. It is also filthy."" This company then fixed it all, cleaned it and it has been working wonderfully for 8 months.
I call Knoth to tell them this experience and let them know how dissatisfied I was for spending almost $600 with them and it still not being fixed, to which there rep, Michelle, wanted to see the invoice from the previous company before any deal was made as far as monetary compensation. I don't like sending around other companies invoices so I sent her the list of parts required and the description of work, to which she replied that without the invoice, she can't do anything. Why she would need more than the parts required and the work done is beyond me. She also told me they don't do boiler cleanings, which is fine, but at least tell me it's filthy so I can have someone come clean it. From techs to customer service reps, this company needs a complete overhaul. Do not waste your money with Knoth, use anybody else.
On January 24th 2018 Knoth came to my house to service my boiler. I had not used my furnace all winter because I knew it had to be serviced. They came to my house repaired my furnace and proceeded to fill the pipes with water(cast iron baseboard heat). They failed to pressure check the pipes first. Well a little while later I found a waterfall pouring down my interior french doors in my kitchen, pouring out of a light fixture and my smoke detectors. My dining room had water pouring out of the Chandelier, through my windows and destroying my computer, stereo system and printer. I went up to my bedroom to find 3 inches of water flooding my bedroom. Gene's employee was panicked so he called Gene immediately. Gene instructed him to get people here to clean it up. NO ONE ever came. I had to clean all that water up myself. I took video's. Gene did not call or stop by to assess the damage. The next day no phone call or visit. I called my insurance company right away because I could not leave all of this moisture in my house, the walls and floors would start to grow mold and mildew. Luckily the insurance company sent Puroclean out to assess the amount of moisture still in the floors and walls. Over 15 dehumidifiers all over my house that sounded like I was in a wind tunnel. I just got the estimate of damage over $6000 worth of damage and still over a week later not even a phone call. The clean up will begin soon and my life has been turned upside down. I implore you to never ever hire this company. He is careless and has no integrity or sense of customer service. He does not return calls. Bad business. Do not hire him even in an emergency!
