We selected Kettle Moraine Heating & A.C. for our pre-season check-up. Service man Shaw showed up with a helper and the first thing they did was check the thermostat, I thought to make sure it was set for heating. 10 minutes later they were back with the bad news that the system would not start and needed $600.00 worth of repairs. Now, the ""inoperative"" part they showed me would fit in the palm of your hand and in no way was worth $600.00, which I told them.. They spent the next 15 minutes in their truck and returned, saying the cost was now $140.00. They did not have the part with them, and said they would return. Then, I checked the thermostat and discovered they had turned it off. No wonder the system would not start! Reporting same to Mr. Brink at K-M's main office he had no answer except to insist I tell him why his service men did this. Obviously it was to try and sell an unneeded $600.00 service call. Kettle Moraine will never set foot on our property again.

We called Kettle Moraine Heating and Air Conditioning during a heat advisory. The technician came out after 3 days to look at the unit. He told us the control board was bad since it had power coming in, but no power going out of the board. He said it would need a control board and that the board and refrigerant could run $2000. He suggested 2 options - a $13,000 mini-split unit and a $600 'window shaker' because he wouldn't suggest fixing the board. I asked the technician to try to find the board and get back with me, but I never heard from him again. We bought the $600 window unit but it couldn't come close to cooling the house. We decided to return the window unit and call a different HVAC company (Alpha Heating and Cooling). That company came out the same day I called, diagnosed the problem (a shorted quick disconnect so power was only on one leg of the 3 phase circuit), fixed the issue, did routine maintenance including adding refrigerant for less than $400. The AC is working well now. The system is older and will need replacement soon. The other HVAC company gave me 5 different options depending on our budget and needs. It is a shame because we have been pleased with Kettle Moraine Heating and Air Conditioning service before, but I can tell you that when the AC unit goes out - we will be contacting Alpha Heating and Cooling.

Quoted me $119 for trip charge plus cost for whatever they found wrong. However, they knew they were going to charge me $320.00 for a diagnosis, but didn't tell me until they were here and had me on the hook for the first $119. ... btw, I did not need a diagnosis.

Details:
My air conditioner wouldn't start so I searched YouTube for the fix. I quickly learned that my capacitor needed to be replaced and that this is very routine, like changing a battery. The capacitor gives an electrical boost that starts the fan spinning, so I could just use a stick to get the fan spinning until the new capacitor could be installed.

The videos demonstrate how to do it yourself in ten minutes with a $20 capacitor from Amazon. However, I decided to call KM, my local Carrier dealer and was quoted a trip charge of $119 plus whatever else they found wrong. I told them it works well except for the capacitor, but they were unable/unwilling to give me a price. Very suspicious, but I knew the part was less than $20 so I scheduled the appointment.

When the service guy arrived (early with a phone call ahead), we walked to the unit together and it was already running. I believe he asked if it was cool in the house, then handed me an iPad to sign for a $462.25 charge before he could proceed.

He then sat in his van for 15 minutes, walked over and popped the capacitor in (2 minutes) for a total visit of 30 mins or less. I assumed this charge was a mistake between the office and technician, so I called the office.

The office confirmed that this is their standard charge because they always have to do a diagnostic. So, a $20 part, plus the $119 trip charge, plus $320 to diagnose the issue with a unit was working when I called them and was working when they arrived.

I did a quick google search for other similar complaints and the worst case I saw in the United States was a charge of $250, but most were complaining about less than $200.

Bill B, service technician, is a magician with gas boilers and not only tuned up our Weil McClain, but explained exactly what he was doing. Extremely honest and a very fair price. I could go on and on........
I highly recommend Kettle Morain. They have great expertise on gas boilers/radiator heat. Bring on the winter!!!!

In searching for a company that would do the once per year maintenance on the HVAC, we were referred to Kettle Moraine. We set up an appointment for a fall furnace maintenance. Doug, the tech, arrived on time and performed the maintenance inspection on the furnace. No problems were found, and Doug explained what what he did and the tests performed. Plan to have them back in the spring to inspect the AC.

I was referred to kettle Moraine and spoke with Jay Zeman who gave me several different options that included many different price points. I never felt like I was being sold to, I just felt like I was being taken care of!
They were in and out of my house in two days even during the coldest days of winter when they were super busy.
Jay came over and did a walk-through and explained everything to me in language that I could understand and comprehend.
