I started with plumbing services, remodeling, and building projects. I grew more licenses and services for radiant heating, air conditioning, electrical services, and remodeling to create a successful service company which I transferred ownership in 1999.
After the sale of the company, I worked by referral only for several years. In 2011, I created JOS Inc. with a dedication to staying compact and producing top-notch work at a competitive price.
My plumbing journey began in 1974. Over the years, I refined my expertise to become proficient in multiple trades. I work to expand my skills new techniques in my trades every day.
I launched a plumbing service in Marin County in 1986. In 1988, I introduced boiler and radiant heating and later, in 1994, I included air conditioning services. In 2002, I introduced construction services with the addition of electrical work in 2006.
My reputation as a successful plumbing, heating, and air conditioning company permitted me to sell to a national company in 1999 before starting my new venture.
My goal is to deliver excellent personal service to all our clients. Assisting customers is my purpose, and I take pride in it.

Wanted to have an A/C unit repaired but because I had originally installed it myself they claimed not to want to risk their reputation repairing a consumer installed unit. Ironically, if I had just said I need a repair of a unit without saying it was consumer installed, they would have scheduled a repair. Beware that this company wants to ensure that consumers are beholden to them and don't know too much. I think the company is good for average consumers and enterprises with no expectation of flexibility or knowledge exchange.

So there are things I know things about and things I don't, and i literally couldn't know less about anything plumbing related. I needed to have a gas lined moved as part of a kitchen remodel. I was planning on going to the house to meet them for the bid and couldn't find my keys anywhere so ended up only talking to the guy on the phone. Then the day of the gas line move I was super sick and so they did the work without anyone there and they called/texted all questions. When I went to the house today everything looked perfect. I may have overpaid, I have no idea, but they are super easy to work with, responsive and it seems (though I have no idea) that they did a good job and left everything super clean. Either time they could have insisted that someone be at the house, but they were super understanding and accommodating of my two last minute emergencies.

Our furnace went out the day after Christmas, and when I came to the realization that an expensive fix on a 22 year old furnace was probably not a good investment, I started researching heat pumps online (The NYTimes and Wall Street Journal both have some recent articles). I got several estimates which were all pretty similar, and decided to go with John Owners Services because I have used them in the past, their estimate and information was extremely thorough, and they were patient with all my questions and the time it took me to make a decision.
I ended up getting a heat pump, new ductwork (this was deferred maintenance on my part), and attic and floor insulation. I had to wait until mid-Feb for the installation, as it took a couple weeks to order the heat pump, and then to schedule the work. It was worth the wait! I am comfortable in the winter in my house for the very first time! All the rooms are the same temperature--the heat balance is amazing.
John Owens Services technicians were knowledgable, professional, and quickly problem solved any issues that came up. Bianca in sales was the most competent sales person I've ever had to my house. She got up in my attic space and took photos of our existing ductwork, and made sure she knew all the intricacies of our house. Besides everyone at John Owens being incredibly competent, their communication systems are outstanding. Stephanie called me up regualrly to update me on the status of our job, and I always received a text when technicians were on the way to to my house. They even have someone in their office dedicated to processing the many rebates that I will receive for all of the work. Lastly, this job took several days and I felt extremely comfortable leaving the technicians in my house when I had to be at work. I heartily recommend them.

I regret hiring John Owens Services to fix my gas furnace. The service was worse than useless. Not only did they try to gouge me, they mis-diagnosed the problem and provided me the wrong part numbers. Furthermore the quotes they offered were almost 800% higher than the retail cost of the parts (which turned out to be incorrect). Owens quoted $800 for a $135 motor and $1000 for a $139 circuit board. When I saw this, I ordered the parts on Ebay and hired my handyman to swap them. Both parts were wrong and the motor ran fine. My handyman ordered the correct control board and fixed the furnace ... all for less than $400! I contested the $150 service call with Owens but he refused to refund the fee. I will be taking that issue up with my credit card company. For your service, I recommend Downey Heating instead of these guys!

Fantastic company. Very good experience from bid to installation to final check. Can't say enough about their professionalism, level of experience, especially the install team. They were polite, made sure our home and areas were clean, put back exactly like before, and made sure we knew all about our new system. They even reconstructed the access panel better than it was before.
We had a very, very difficult home to install a new system- the underfloor crawl space was very small, but they managed to install everything with no remarks or attitude at all, unlike others that came out to bid.
I would definitely contract with them again and give them my highest marks. Thank you John Owens.

I appreciate longevity in business and your response to my review. However, the job in question took less than an hour and no expensive parts. A bill in excess of $700 is unreasonable in my book. Time and materials pricing would address your concerns and be fairer to the consumer. My comments are only one person's opinion.

They installed a leaking water heater and said they could do it ""right away,"" which they did. They also charged 5 TIMES the amount I paid 3 years ago with another vendor for a comparable water heater. When I called to ask for the breakdown of the this invoice item - ""Install AMERICAN STANDARD 40 GALLON ELECTRIC WATER HEATER Standard 240 volt 30 amp electric circuit required, QTY 1.00, COST $3,356.00"" - I was told they do not provide any breakdown for time, hourly rate or materials and then I got a lecture about ""business costs, like me being here to answer the phone, and Mr. Owens would never take advantage of a customer."" That is insane. In hindsight, I feel completely ripped off by a company who knew I was having a plumbing emergency, said they would fix it quickly, and charged an astronomical rate to do so. (The $3,356 doesn't even include an additional $1150 in charges for ball valve, to plumb drain and T&P.)

During the recent storms, my boiler stopped working. I was scheduled for service today but I found out that the road to my house was closed yet again due to more downed power lines. I was greatly disappointed and about to call JOS to ask to reschedule as soon as possible when I got a call from Matt. He had taken a miles-long alternative route through the National Park and was here to do the service! He found that the problem was a part that had failed after four years but was warrantied by JOS for five, replaced the part, and there was no charge. Thank you, this is superior service.

We would like to sing praises for Max Rosen-Bolich who came today to repair a blocked toilet and a 2nd leaking toilet. He reset the leaking toilet, then was very astute in helping to diagnose the fact that some previous work done by Ross Valley Sanitary District in late Dec. utilizing our clean-out had caused a sewage blockage impacting our entire house. He stuck with it until RVSD came, did a check of main pipes (which didn't clear our line), so then Max had to snake our lateral and he found the blocking material left behind by RVSD in Dec. This very personable, unruffled and experienced plumber solved our problem, thank goodness.

Live in an Eichler home...kitch sink stopped draining. It was confirmed that the line under slab was broken. Tim and William came out and after reconfirming that indeed the line was broken they came up with a plan that would do the least amount of damage inside and more importantly would allow us to stay in the home (with our puppy) while repairs were being made.
FIVE stars to their creativity and clear explanation of what needed to be done
