Maybe this guy is too busy now that he has so many good yelp reviews but I am sorry to say that my experience with him is not a good one. I contacted him via email with a detailed list of what I needed done. He responded a few days later with an affordable price. I replied saying that the price was good and asked how soon he could do the work and that I could only be home during evenings or weekends- this was on a Tuesday. He responded quickly and asked how early in the evening I could be home on that Friday. I responded 5:00 p.m. He wrote back quickly and said, ""Great!"" and then asked if there were any restrictions in my building that he needed to know about. I replied and said no, we're good to go. I left work early that Friday to be home for his arrival. When he still was not there at 6:30 p.m., I contacted him to ask if he was still coming that night. He replied that we never confirmed the appointment.....which is ridiculous. He asked if I was available on Monday and I wrote back and asked if he could come over the weekend instead. I still have received no reply from him and it's been over a month. Apparently, this is guy is no longer reliable. Beware.

I am so glad I found Jim through the reviews on Yelp. Jim is a gem! He is one of the best handymen I've dealt with. His work is impeccable and flawless. He is honest and the nicest, easiest going guy you'll ever meet. He will put you at ease immediately. Jim knows his craft and he can repair, build and beautify any part of your home. Jim showed up on time and responded to my email the same day I contacted him. He is super responsible and hard-working! I highly recommend Jim!

Yelp readers, BEWARE!

I found out about Jim through Yelp and felt comfortable hiring him because he had received good ratings overall. But, how wrong was I!

I hired Jim to install an in-wall air conditioner. He was extremely friendly and helpful at first and because of that I excused some unusual behavior during our first meeting. Upon seeing my air conditioner, he recommended that we try to fix it instead of purchasing a new one. So, adhering to his professional opinion, I drove him to Home Depot and picked up the materials he needed to fix the unit. Three hours later, his recommendation was unsuccessful and yet he still charged me $150. That weekend, he e-mails me some other suggestions which I did appreciate. He apparently found a 6-7 year-old used AC and wanted me to purchase it from his client at a lowered amount. It seemed reasonable and fair enough, though, it was strange how much he wanted me to purchase this AC. Fortunately, I was able to find an AC from my parent's house and asked him to install this one instead. Two days later, he sends me a very unprofessional and rude e-mail accusing me of using him. I still do not know how I supposedly took advantage of him if I am the one left having paid $150 with no AC installed. This experience has left me frustrated and disappointed.

Jim is unprofessional, unreliable and moderately skilled. Yelp readers, I suggest you to reconsider before hiring him.

No call, no show...Not only did Jim not call to say he wouldn't be coming, he also avoided phone calls and emails when attempting to inquire as to his where abouts...

Jim is awesome! I needed someone do to a bunch of random work in my apartment, so of course I turned to Yelp. Based on the reviews, I went with Jim. He was amazingly talented, professional and reasonable. He regrouted some broken tiles in our shower and hung a few light fixtures. I highly recommend him!

I've never really ""hired"" a handyman before Jim, but of all of the handymen I've ever dealt with--Jim is the most clean cut, extremely professional, reliable, and incredibly genuine. Jim's hourly rates are reasonable and he does not overcharge, even if he over/underestimates (especially if a quote is given over the phone without seeing the actual place that needs work done)--his fees are appropriate and completely reasonable.

I've just moved into a studio apartment that required a much needed upgrade. I called a bunch of handyman services that I found on Yelp, and Jim was only 1 of 3 that got back to me on the same day. Since he was so friendly and patient with my request, I immediately scheduled an appointment with him. He confirmed our appointment the evening before, arrived on time, and promptly got to work after greeting me. He painted my kitchen, bathroom, and a wall in the living room...and my apartment now looks amazing! He also installed a new showerhead and changed my toilet seat in literally less than 5 minutes. Throughout the day, he was also very conversational and friendly. More importantly, I felt that I could trust him with my apartment and belongings, as I left for a couple of hours while he was still working.

Hiring Jim was SO worth it (and I paid out of my own pocket since my landlord was not required to make all of the updates that I wanted to make)...I'm loving my apartment!

I give this guy two stars because on my particular job, he failed to impress me. I asked him to install a new vanity, which he did, but the job took about 3 extra hours because there was a leak that he could not correct once everything was put together. I believe he did not have too much experience with pluming, but other jobs he did for me that same day, like install window guards, and open up a wall A/C whole on a wall, were done ok. He was very professional and guaranteed that he would return to re-do the job, should the leak start again, and he was good on his promise. He maintained a positive and professional attitude. Also, he did not charge me for the extra time it took to fix the leak, nor for having to return. Overall, he seems more experienced with A/C jobs and nailing in things on the wall, but may not be too experienced with pluming.

Jim Scanlan is incredibly professional, prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable in his field. I hired him to hang some curtains and blinds around my new apartment, and he installed them with no trouble at all! Furthermore, I mentioned that I intend to hang a decorative rug on my wall, and he e-mailed me a few hours after he finished the job here with a list of different options for hanging it. After that, I would wager a bet that, if you look up the word ""thorough"" in the dictionary, it'll have his picture next to it. Highly recommended!

During the first hot week of the (almost) Summer I called Jim to install two wall air conditioners in my apartment. I expected that it would be very hard to schedule a time, but it was all done perfectly less than 24 hours later!

Jim was exactly on time, explained what he was doing, and had the patience of a saint as my two year old asked him ""What are you doing?"" every 3 minutes. Very nice guy, knows his stuff, highly recomded. Will definately call him in the future for any handyman-type assistance!
