I am an out of town owner of a property in Charlottesville. We needed a new water heater. I called several plumbing companies and none of them would give me an over the phone ballpark cost estimate. This meant I would have to make two 4 hour round trips....one for an estimate and one to get the work done. Then I read some great reviews about Jefferson Plumbing. I called Randal and he had no issue with providing an estimate over the phone. First check in the plus column. We agreed to meet at the property at 10 a.m......he and his partner Brittany arrived before I did...what plumber does that?!? Second check in the plus column. They quickly assessed what needed to be done and got right to work. They worked quietly and the install went extremely smoothly and not one speck of debris remained after they were finished. Two more checks in the plus column. Pricing was fair and Randal was very transparent with me when I asked how he arrived at the price for the job. Number five check in the plus column. Randal seems to take great pride in his work and his company, deservedly so. His is the only plumber card I will keep on my refrigerator. Thank you, Randal and Brittany, for a job well done!

We had just closed on our new home and walked in for the first time with the ceiling leaking. I called Randal and he came out the same day, explained to me exactly what he was doing and fixed the issues with upstairs toilet causing the leak. He was very professional and did a great job! I reached out to Jefferson Plumbing through Yelp. Randal responded right away. I asked him about installing a soda ash system where I live. He responded with irrelevant information about water pH, so I repeated my request. ""Can you install a soda ash system where I live?""

He said, ""Our water consultations are $129 and that covers an onsite visit as well as water testing.""

So, we set up a date and time and he was here right on time.

When he got here, he asked to look at my water. I said, ""Why?"" He said, ""To do the water quality testing."" I said, ""If that is why you are here, we have totally wasted each other's time because I am not interested in a water quality test. I am interested in having my soda ash system installed.""

He said, ""Okay, let's take a look."" So, he went downstairs and spent about half an hour looking at the parts to the system, my pipes, and talking in plumber-ese. He told me my system was inadequate but if that's what I wanted, he could install it for $2300 or I could go with his recommendation for $4,200.

He said he couldn't install the system that day because it would take half a day and he hadn't planned for that.

I was so Pi**ed off that I decided to just do it myself. So, after he left, I watched an 11 minute Youtube video on how to put together the pump and completed that part in 30 minutes. Then I watched a 6 minute video on how to tie it into the plumbing system. I had to go to Lowes for the sharkbite coupling, but that took another 20 minutes.

Long story short, the communication was really bad. I felt like I was being mansplained to the whole time as a tactic to make me think I was in over my head. He didn't respond to my questions. He tried to take control of the conversation and lead it where he wanted it to go. If he was sincere about service, he really could have just installed the soda ash system in the 30 minutes that he was there instead of standing around looking at my pipes. If I, a complete novice, could do that in 50 minutes, a professional could have had it done in half the time easily. And if he couldn't, then he's not a professional.

And by the way, the system that I have works just fine.
