Carl came over today to investigate a strong sewer smell that has been occurring in our bathroom. I was told he would come with no charge, then provide a quote for any work. If desired, they'd be able to do the work right then and there.

Unfortunately, my bathroom didn't smell today (of course, the one day I had arranged a plumber to come)! But I was able to describe the problem; Carl listened and asked thoughtful questions to understand. After inspecting the bathroom plumbing including the sink, toilet, etc. Carl shared his opinion of the most likely cause for this smell and how to resolve. Given that the solution involved tearing open the wall and that the smell was no longer present, I opted to not have Carl solve it today. I told Carl that I'd probably attempt the work myself if the smell resurfaced, and Carl completely understood.

ADDITIONALLY Carl called an hour after leaving my house to tell me that he discussed with his partner about our issue and suggested to replace the toilet's wax seal before tearing open the wall to try the first solution he suggested. He already knew I was going to do the work myself, but still took the time and concern to suggest an easier potential fix to try first. To me this demonstrates Carl's sincere concern to resolve a customer's problems and that he's not trying to milk customers for money.

Jeff-n-Carl's replaced our water heater 2 years ago. Recently - 2 years on - there was a failed and leaking joint at the elbow to the expansion tank.
