JD Construction
Company Overview
At JD Construction, we offer top-notch driveway and masonry services, including new driveways, patios, steps, concrete work, brick pavers, drainage solutions, and sidewalks.
As the owner, James Delaney carries on the family tradition as a third-generation asphalt paver. In late 2009, James recognized the challenges of coordinating multiple contractors for driveway and masonry projects. This insight inspired him to launch JD Construction, the sole paving and masonry firm in West Hartford. Since then, JD Construction has risen to be one of the foremost companies for paving and masonry work in the Greater Hartford area.
Hi, my name is James Delaney, and I am proud to own JD Construction. From a young age, I have been immersed in the construction field, working alongside my father, who is also in the industry. I come from Ireland and emigrated to the United States over six years ago. I love being a small business owner in West Hartford, and I believe there’s no better place to raise my kids.

Lynn T.We had a patio installed and drainage added to our backyard. They did beautiful work which they completed on schedule and at the quoted price. They were wonderful to work with and we love our new patio.
I can't review their work because they never showed up to give me an estimate. We made an appointment and I rushed home to meet them. No call. No show. Not a good sign for their reliability!
JD Construction redid my driveway -- expanded it, too, to fit an extra car -- and walkway in August, and I was very happy with the results. My driveway had huge cracks in it (literally, grass growing through), and the walkway to the front door was also asphalt and not very attractive. JD Construction's quote was in the midrange of all of the quotes I got, and they worked with me on the price and payment schedule to make it work.
It took a while to get everything going, because of their schedule with other houses, but I'm incredibly happy with the final product. The driveway is smooth and clean, they changed its shape after I requested it during the process, and the pavers are beautiful. Would absolutely recommend folks to call JD if they're looking for similar products.
Keri K.The two stars was earned because my driveway was torn up and repaved by them and two winters later it still looks great not a single crack or puddling issue ever. So for paving alone, I would recommend. They were very friendly and timely, thats not where my problem lies.
My issue is with the stacked stone retaining wall that goes on either side of my driveway that we asked to replace after the fact. Key word was ""replace"". Well, lesson learned for going forward with any contracted home repair, get it in detailed writing! We basically had a verbal agreement on the wall portion of work. What I got was the same existing loose stones all restacked (same postion as before) and slapped a sloppy layer of light grey cement on top to hold together. My expectation which aligned with the price I paid (based on estimates I've received), was for new stone or block type pavers to be used/replace. I simply assumed, and when I came home and saw the work being finished and same stone still there...I realized my mistake and was too embarrassed to say anything but knew I was ripped off. The price I paid for this ""restacking"" of my sidewalls is an absolute ripoff and offsets any deal I thought I got on the paving price. And yes the cement layer on top is crumbled and the rocks are already loose again. Hence my review as I am going to have to pay another business to replace this job.
Their worker also cracked one of the bluestone stairs leading up the walkway immediately off driveway, when he tore down the stones to restack on that side of driveway and I had to have that replaced by the contractor who re-did my stairs (because I would never rehire JD).
And yes, ditto to what the other reviewers say about only accepting cash or checks not made out to their business. So yes, you will miss out on those credit card points with them.
Called for a quote for driveway repair. Guy was short abrupt and kind of rude. Happy I didn't give them my business.
Sarah C.We decided to get our old asphalt driveway and sidewalk (concrete) walkway removed and replaced. After talking and getting a quote from one other company, we decided to go with JD Construction as they were doing another job right down the street. We walked down to ask them to come by and they did right away. The brother that own the company are extremely nice, knowledgable and professional. We told them what we were looking for, then made recommendations and drew up a contract. They would begin within 3 weeks. A week later they were back and within a day our entire driveway and walk were removed and everything was tamped down and prepped. After sitting for awhile we decided on pavers for the walk (they bring you samples to choose from) and a design. The walkway went in on two days and it was VERY nicely done. It looks perfect. They also concrete the sides to that everything is right and not as likely to shift. A few days later they came back and the driveway went in in a couple hours. The guys were great. The workers were courteous and cleaned up really well at the end of each day. We were happy with the speed at which the project was completed, the fact that we're were involved from beginning to end (they keep you totally in the loop and let you know why thy are doing certain things or using certain materials), and the price seemed pretty fair, especially for the area.
I would highly recommend them for any similar projects.
My wife and I have an ""old"" house in West Hartford, CT with an equally ""old"" asphalt driveway. We had to do some sort of repair to it. We called some asphalt sealing companies and an asphalt paving company to come by and look at our driveway. They all had suggestions as to how we could repair our driveway to get some more years out of it.
Then we got a flyer in the local paper for JD Construction and we thought we would get another opinion as to how to deal with our asphalt driveway. We called the number on the flyer and the next day we met with James the owner of the company and he was knowledgeable and friendly.
He talked to us about how his company could resurface our asphalt driveway or he could make our house look a ton better with brick pavers. I was curious and the more we talked, I was convinced that brick pavers would be the way to go!
Signed the contract on Monday. Tuesday his crew showed up with lots of the proper equipment to rip out my old driveway and lay the correct base material for the paving bricks. He brought by samples of brick colors for us to choose and we could decide on the pattern that we wanted. Wednesday morning he came by to ask us what we would like... and by Wednesday at 5:00pm we had our new driveway!
I must say that the professionalism, quickness and attention to detail was amazing. I would highly recommend this company to anybody that asks.
Maggie L.I have had several experiences with JD Construction, although the I've never had work done with them personally.
First, I called them to get a quote on replacing some front steps. One of the main contractors came to check out the job. He was very charming and seemed honest. He quoted me $7K and several days to get my brick front steps replaced and a paver pathway laid. This was extremely high ... I got another licensed contractor to complete the project about two weeks later for $3K and one day using the same materials JD had quoted me $7K for. It turned out amazing and a year later still looks fabulous, so I'm happy with my decision not to go with JD.
However ... While JD was at my house for a quote, it turns out, my neighbor saw his truck in my driveway and came over immediately after he left to warn me.
My next door neighbor showed me his driveway which had been poured by JD Construction the previous season. There were footprints in the pavement where a worker had stepped against the house and the pavement was messily poured around his fence pole, damaging the pole itself.
After telling my other neighbor a few streets over what had happened, she showed me her driveway which had also been poured by JD Construction. The driveway is sloped towards the house and water leaks into their basement only three months after being poured. They had to get it resurfaced by another company.
Overall, this may be a series of coincidences, but it doesn't seem likely that my two separate neighbors are the only displeased JD Construction customers. Additionally, their quote to me for my steps was very high.
This all happened about a year ago, but when I found a flier for spring repairs they had put into my mailbox today, I had to help other potential customers! Make sure to do your research. I'm sure some people have had good work done by JD - I assume it's the luck of the draw!
Do not give JD Construction any money until the job is TOTALLY completed. I gave them a down payment, they cashed the check in May of 2014 but the work was never performed for the second part of the job, which is what the down payment was for.
I had paid them also in May of 2014, $2,400.00 for the first part of the job and they ran out of adphalt and said they would be back in a week, if no rain and would put more asphalt down to complete the first part of the job, there was no rain and they never finished the first part of the job! (In hindsight, I should Not have paid them until they brought more asphalt.)
The second part of job was sealing driveway and that's what the down payment was for, this was in 2014 and the work is still not done 2016 and they won't return my down payment! They are saying that I cancelled last minute twice! Even if I did, which I didn't, why do they seem to think they are entitled to $500.00!
Lesson learned, do not pay until job is totally completed.
These guys are the worst contractors i have ever hired.. driveway is 19 months old.. rotten substandard work over charged. Also came over the house to ""collect"" there money.. wanted to follow me to the atm! these guys are a bunch of unprofessional drunks.. used my lawn furniture to relax while their laborers did the work..left cans and cigarette butts in the yard.. caused problems with neighbors by starting job Sunday morning 7am against west hartford zoning.. please double check thee guys and at least get another quote.. they didn't use enough asphalt or gravel below.. bums. NO STARS from me..
