Company Overview

When comfort is key
Hugh E. Joyce launched James River Heating Air Conditioning Company in 1967. Initially called Joyce Air, the business began as a single-person business, with the owner managing sales, installations, and all aspects of the operation. In the early 1970s, the company developed and diversified, and around the mid-1970s, the company changed its name to James River Air Conditioning.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the company further developed, offering services and products through three main divisions: Residential, Commercial, and Design/Build.

At present, the company has over 150 staff members and covers the entire Central Virginia Area with a fleet of more than eighty GPS-enabled service and installation vehicles. We consistently provide new products and services, including our exclusive in-house brand, James River Select™, along with the latest indoor air quality solutions.
Hugh Joyce, the owner of James River Air Conditioning Company, has worked in the family HVAC/R service industry since 1980. Starting as an installation assistant, he transitioned to service, sales, and management roles. Now, he is the majority shareholder and President of the company.

James River along with its affiliate, Whitescarver Engineering, provide services to the Richmond, Virginia and Roanoke, Virginia markets, respectively. The company’s sales surpass $23.0 million, with 40% of revenue coming from residential clients and 60% from commercial customers. The company mainly focuses on service and replacement markets; less than 15% of revenue is from new commercial construction.

Hugh went to the University of Richmond, where he earned a B.S. Degree in Management with a focus on marketing and finance. Additionally, Hugh is a former board member of ACCA National and a past president of the Central Virginia ACCA. Hugh is affiliated with Rotary, Richmond SPCA, BBB of Richmond, Boy Scouts, YMCA, PHCC, and AGC.

Stan and Jake just finished replacing our AC system - coil, outdoor unit, and some duct work. They worked hard, took care to respect and protect our home and things, and did excellent work. Their workmanship was the best I've seen.

Everyone we met from JRA since our AC froze up three weeks ago went to great lengths to explain our options and help us get our system going again with the things we needed but nothing more. Give them a call. You won't regret it.

Finally after going through many companies to get estimates on a new air condition package unit , I called James River Air for a second opinion. After watching Craig completely tear down my unit and show me in detail the problem, I decided to fix rather than replace the unit since it was less than 5 years old. Since the entire condensing coils had to be replaced due to a leak, I had originally figured the job would have been a risky proposition. But with a technician that is detail oriented and very thorough such as Craig I decided to take the risk. Well I am very pleased with that decision. Everything is working perfectly and my house is cooler than ever. I use to work with James River Air commercial division employees a few years back with very good results. I am glad to see their residential department is just as good. Congratulations on 50 years of quality service to the Richmond area!

PS Not sure what is going on here with reviews but please feel free to contact me if you are anticipating a repair and have questions. I will be glad to share my very positive experience with James River Air

Our hot water heater stopped functioning over the weekend. Using their coupon, I received a house call for $49, which was reasonable/good for a Sunday, compared to their competitors. But then they charged me $190 for one hour of diagnostic in which they didn't fix the problem (because they didn't have the parts). So, $240 for a diagnostic, and nothing was fixed. What a rip off! I called the manufacturer the next day and they were able to walk me through the steps of what was wrong (for free).

I then received a call the next day with an estimate of $573 for labor (parts were free--covered by warranty) to install the two new parts ($573 at $191/hr). Total would have been $810 to fix a water heater (I've had new ones installed for less). I was already a little sore from the previous bill, so I decided to move forward with a more reasonably priced alternative (Carroll).

I've been suckered into calling James River a few times over the past 10 years, but no matter what deal they present, they always turn out to be the most expensive option (except perhaps when compared to Michael and Sons). Do not call them for repair work, unless you have money to burn!

I called in a couple weeks ago to get an estimate on having a Nest thermostat installed since Nest has them as an Elite installer. At that time I spoke with a rep who said I could call back and set up a time to have someone come give me an estimate but they couldn't do it over the phone. After I made her aware that I lived in an apartment she did recommend I get permission from my landlord first. So I thanked her and told her id call back once I got permission. I was able to get permission this week. I call back today to set up a date and time to have this done or at least get an estimate and the person I spoke with informs me that they do not do anything with apartments. This is a standard policy from upstairs and he checked but their commercial side doesn't do this either. They probably should have told me that on the initial call when they put me on hold 3 times. I guess in reading more reviews I should be thankful that they don't because of the cost of the estimate I guess they could have come out and charged me then told me later they didn't do apartment installations since the first person I spoke to wanted to set up the appointment for the following week.

James River is the best ,always have knowledgeable and kind technicians.
Mike Jones arrived on time ,asked to change my filters before proceeding to make sure my system was working well.
Unfortunately I did not have any filters available but was able to place an order from the company,no one has ever asked to change my filters I perch on the ladder myself!
Overall great experience look forward to doing business with James River for a long time :-)

Mike was prompt, friendly, and courteous. We woke up to no heat on the coldest day of the year. He had us warm again in no time. Couldn't be happier.

On January 21, 2016 James River Air came to my house to repair a non functional heater. We have gas heat with forced air. My wife was home while they did the inspection. The technician (Employee # 1320) told her we had a cracked heat exchanger and that he needed to call his manager. His manager, Bryan, then arrived and told my wife there was a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning if the unit was not replaced. We received a quote for $9834 to replace the unit. They also placed a red ""Danger"" tag on our unit. We have since had two other heating and air-conditioning repair companies inspect our system and both said our heat exchanger is fine without cracks. Their red ""Danger"" tag though has caused problems with our newly purchased home warranty since the warranty company now has this (non-existent) heat exchanger crack listed as a pre-existing condition and I now have to prove to them that the crack never did exist. This entire story is similar to another complaint also registered with James River Air through the BBB and seems to be a common practice of this business. A quick internet search reveals multiple reports of this scam: https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGHP_enUS434US434&q=heat+exchange+scam I believe James River Air tried to scare my wife into purchasing a new furnace by falsely stating that our heat exchanger was cracked. I would not trust this company.

Mike the service tech was personable and professional and will be welcome in our home again. However, the ""tune-up"" I purchased was less than I had hoped for. Mike explained what operations he had performed, and it was little more than an inspection, and I learned little more than I could have by simply turning on the equipment and waiting for it to start.

My hot water heater started leaking and I was considering switching over to a tankless system. They sent someone out on a Saturday to give a free estimate. So far so good, right? I got the estimate and it was about $14,000 which was close to three times as much as a different estimate from a reputable, licensed, certified tankless installer. I don't care how good their work is, those prices are gouging bordering on criminal.
