never had a chance to utilize their services. they have a coupon out in the 'value pac' that comes to my mailbox weekly. second time now since i called them that the coupon is included. 'claims' they do a gas furnace & gas fireplace tune up for $99. all i really wanted was for the fireplace. when i called i was asked if i had a service agreement w/them. no, i do not. then i was told they were no longer honoring/taking the coupons. so if i would have had a service agreement would i have gotten that price? who knows. should pull the coupons if they are not honoring them!

I have two gas fireplaces in my house, both about 25 years old, and both needed service (one wouldn't ignite, second made a lot of noise). I looked around in the DC area and found it hard to find a firm that could service the fireplaces directly rather than farm the work out to another contractor.
I called Hood and described the problems with a very friendly person at the office who arranged a service visit within the week. They were very transparent on the price of the initial diagnostic/inpection visit and what it covered.
The tech was named Robert, and he arrived on time (with a phone call when he was half an hour away) and worked with the fireplaces to diagnose and clean them. Both needed some parts, so we arranged a visit a couple of weeks later, when everything was fixed. The fireplaces are running well and look great (glass was dirty and steel wool embers added for ornament had long disappeared).
The whole experience was very good from the beginning -- Robert was an excellent tech who was knowledgeable, patient in answering my questions, and very neat in coming in and cleaning the area. He was very straightforward in discussing the pricing of the needed additional work, and pricing seemed reasonable for the work done.
I'm happy to recommend this company and will call them again, likely for their basic fireplace inspection/tune-up with the hope that at this point the fireplaces will continue to work well.
I contacted J Hood Services from a ValPak insert because they are local and family owned. I needed to replace my boiler and hot water heater. Dan McCarthy came and gave me a free estimate and was a very knowledgeable representative for the company and quoted me a fair price. Due to unforeseen complications I had to have a tankless system installed. Mr. McCarthy worked with me and honored the original quote he gave me. The crew that was sent for the installation could not have better (Bean, &Tyrone). The office girls have also been extremely helpful (Tee) in helping me through the process. I will definitely use this company in future and would recommend them to anyone needing HVAC services.

This company is dishonest and untrustworthy. In October, 2023 one of their reps came to my home to do a Fall maintenance check of my furnace. Within ten minutes he called me to the basement to inform me that I had a cracked heat exchanger. He showed me a picture from his phone of a blurry, black line that meant nothing to me. He told me that he does not like to ""red tag"" homeowners' furnaces, but that he was ""98% sure"" that the heat exchanger was cracked. He later upped this to 99.5 % sure. When I asked him if he had measured the carbon monoxide in the flue he said that he had loaned his detector to another crew in his company. He strongly advised me not to turn the furnace on and to buy several carbon monoxide detectors. He also said that he could ""taste the carbon monoxide in the corners of his mouth."" Besides not testing for carbon monoxide levels, the technician did not pull the burners or disassemble the blower assembly to get a clear look at the heat exchanger. I later received an emailed invoice which listed 20 to 30 items that should have been checked but were not. Also, the picture of the ""cracked heat exchanger"" was, not surprisingly, omitted from the invoice. Claiming that heat exchangers are cracked is a common industry scam by those dishonest HVAC contractors. In my case, the technician stated that both my furnace and AC unit needed to be replaced at a cost of approximately $ 10,000. Within two days I had a reputable company come out and disassemble my blower unit to get a good look at the heat exchanger. He also performed TWO carbon monoxide tests, one in the flue and another at my ceiling vent. He said he could find no evidence that I had a cracked heat exchanger. When I called the original company and talked to the owner and explained all the facts he knew that his rep had tried to scam me and promised to refund the inspection fee and pay for a carbon monoxide detector that I had bought. He did neither of these things. This company is dishonest and does not deserve your business. I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and the Fairfax Consumer Protection Office.
Terrific company!! Our hot water heater decided to have an issue on a holiday weekend. We called J Hood on Sunday night and Jeff was at our home Monday morning before 9am! He fixed our water heater in record time. In addition, he was friendly, knowledgeable and just an all around nice person. Thank you, Jeff! Looking forward to having you guys update our plumbing in our kitchen soon!
N S.J Hood is absolute fantastic. They were recommended by my condo HOA to replace my tanked water heater to a tankless unit. Below is a commendation letter that I personally wrote and sent to Mr. Hood. I'm having them come out to replace my AC Air Handler next week to remedy a horrible job ARS did 4 years ago.

I'd like to take a moment of your busy day to inform you of the exceptional service I received by Dave and Drew who recently came to my Alexandria residence to replace an old Bradford-White 75 gal. water heater with a tankless Navien system on Oct. 11, 2022.
In the span of the past few years, I consulted with several companies on my options and cost estimates. I inquired with our residence property manager if there was anyone they recommended and they offered J Hood. I promptly called and spoke to a very cordial gentleman named Cody who promptly and professionally scheduled my estimate. From the first moment I met and interacted with Dave to provide the estimate I knew I had made the right choice to not only pursue a tankless system, but to also do so with J Hood.
Upon their timely arrival, the team prepped the area and consistently monitored their activities to not cause any collateral damage while removing and installing the old and new systems. Having worked many years in the home improvement industry, it rapidly became apparent that the quality of the materials exceeded my already high expectations. The quality and care of the work being performed represented not only Doug's exceptional knowledge and experience, but also the insight and wisdom of J Hood to hire such a top-quality team in the first place. Moreover, what can't be learned out of technical books is the high level of integrity and ethics the team brought, which to me is what's most priceless.
In summary, I'm likely not informing you of anything you don't already know but thought in these difficult social and economic times I wanted to make a point to not only thank Dave and Drew for their exceptional effort, but to also thank you, Mr. Hood. My father has always told me that exceptional performance is always a representation of exceptional leadership.

Wow... I could not have chosen a better plumber to solve my problems...I thought my water heater was going to have to be replaced...I had another plumbing service out the week before and was changed $800.00 for thirty minutes of snaking out a drain... didn't fix the problem...J. Hood came out on the recommendation of my neighborhood social media feed...they were prompt and professional...they located the problem in minutes...not my water heater but a line in my AC was the issue...they fixed it, cleaned up the water flooding and guess what, they didn't charge me anything because they said it was just a minor problem and I had already had a bad experience with the other highly advertised plumbing firm...I can't recommend J. Hood Services enough...a bright light of service, professionalism, and integrity!
