Irwin Friedman & Son
Company Overview
Since 1926, we have been a certified and covered fourth generation family-run plumbing, heating, and fire protection solutions company. We provide home, business, institutional, and industrial jobs, covering minor projects to entire build-outs, drain cleaning, water heaters and gauges, natural gas, steam and water leaks, back flow device installations and inspections, correction of city issues and NYC Fire Department violations. Our service area includes the five boroughs of NYC and look forward to turning your plumbing aspirations into reality!
In 1926, my late grandfather, Louis, established the business with my late grandmother, Ida, from their home in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. After school, my late father, Irwin, would don his work clothes and assist my grandfather. Irwin earned his certification in 1961. I, Jay Friedman, began working with my father during summers at the age of 16. I moved full-time at 19, successfully completed the Master Plumbers test, and received my Master Plumbers license at 24, assuming leadership the company in 1987. I am now joined by my wonderful son, Brandon, who is preparing to be the 4th generation Master Plumber. We aim to transform your plumbing aspirations into reality!
Born in 1963, I joined the family business full-time at 19. I completed my studies from The Mechanics Institute (class of 1983) and pursued additional schooling at Plumbers Local 1, where I finished in the top 4 of my class in 1988. Following that, I began my third school for preparation to obtain my NYC Master Plumbers License in 1989, which I obtained in 1992. I also obtained my NYC Fire Suppression License in 1995. After the passing of my late father, Irwin Friedman, in 1998, I managed the business solo until 2012, when my son, Brandon Friedman, joined me to prepare for the 4th generation.

Jens F.Wholeheartedly recommending Friedman Irwin & Son Inc! My water heater stopped working after some electrical issues in the building. Called them in the morning and they were able to come in right away. They found and fixed the problem in around 15 minutes. Aside from fixing the problem in record time, they were friendly and professional! They will be my go-to plumbers from now on.
George C.Friedman and son are the best!!!!!! Brandon and Jay are amazing. If you want the best give them a caall
Irwin Freidman is pricey - about double the rate of my regular plumber. But for twice the price, I did get twice the professionalism, reliability, efficiency and punctuality. You absolutely get what you pay for here. Great, high-quality results and customer service.
Irwin and Friedman is just amazing they are the new plumbers from here on out, I highly recommend everyone to hire them for the right and professional work they do they come with great attitude and always trying to help and give the right services to their clients. Prices are on point, guys I truly recommend everyone
I found this company on Yelp on 6/22. They came the same day within 20 minutes, handled the problem I was having in no time and gave me a price. All within a span of no more than half an hour. Amazing! Howard, Brandon and Co., were all professional and polite. The reviews for this company are on point. They are who they say they are. I will definitely use their service in the future and will definitely recommend this company to others!!
Friedman Irwin & Son Inc is AMAZING!!! I called them last night out of desperation -- my hot water was out -- and they were able to come FIRST thing this morning. They were in and out in no time and extremely professional, respectful and polite. And of course, my hot water is fixed. I highly recommend them for all of your plumbing needs! They couldn't be better.
I've had Jay and his crew out a couple times over the last 2 years, for everything from a small leak to a bigger job. Besides just being a really nice guys, they were prompt, are extremely professional, fairly priced, quick and efficient. What more can you ask for from a plumber....highly recommended!
Tessa W.I called after hours and left a voicemail giving details and asking for a call back (I didn't call the optional emergency number offered, since it wasn't an emergency). I got a call back early the next morning, as requested. They are located only a few blocks from me, and instead of making an appointment they were able to send a guy over within 10-15 mins, even though I was willing to arrange something for later (awesome), so I could still get to work that morning and not worry about coming home early. My issue was a very simple clogged toilet, he brought a snake, and he was in and out in 15 minutes since it was easy enough that I probably could have taken care of it myself but wanted to have called a plumber in order to demonstrate to my insurance that I was doing my due diligence. He made sure to double check that the flush was functioning before leaving and was super friendly and professional. On the phone, I was quoted $150-$175 depending on the difficulty of the job, and the guy who came diligently called after he was done to confirm pricing, including mentioning that it was very easy and not to enforce the upper end of their quote, which I appreciated. As quoted, cost was $150 (cash or check only, but tax excluded so ended up being $164), and he gave me a receipt without me asking for it which I appreciate when a business is cash only. I would have loved a slightly lower price considering how easy the job was and that I was flexible on timing, but these guys had the snake and did the job, and I did not, and we live in NYC where rent is definitely not free, especially for businesses. I felt as though this was in line with local pricing, but not a steal, which is totally fine. I think I could have found a (slightly) cheaper price for the job, but based on what I've read only by about $25 and it may have taken a few days, and I like hiring local because I want that kind of neighborhood. These guys did exactly what they said they would for exactly the price that they quoted me, which is all you can ask for. Can't offer info regarding more complicated work, but I got an excellent response time and good feeling from them and would definitely recommend them for a simple job, and would consider them for something more serious. Thanks guys!
I should've expected a snarky attitude from this guy when I read his replies to other people who gave legitimate criticism. This guy is so nasty for reasons I can't quite understand. First of all, his business wasn't open on time so I called an alternate number and perhaps he was grumpy because it was early but he wanted to charge $200/ hr to come and estimate the work when I ask for clarity if $200/ hr was for the actual work or the estimate he replies ""I don't work for free"" no one asked you to work for free I just wanted to be clear. As a homeowner I understand that plumbers charge service fees but usually plumbers will say ""we charge a service fee of $$ and if you choose us to do the work this will be applied to your cost"" simple and professional.
After speaking with him I'm very suspicious of all these 5 star reviews. Naturally I'm sure the owner won't hesitate to provide a nasty response but readers of these reviews should note that several people have raised the same complaint about this guy. Don't make the same mistake I made and overlook the tone in his replies to people and the highly accurate feedback about his negative demeanor. Ideally, one expects a plumber to knowledgable, trustworthy and at least cordial which inspires confidence that they know what they're doing but more importantly it earns credibility that you'll make things right in the event something unexpected happens. Sure you can fix a simple kitchen sink and get 5 stars but when you're contracted for more complicated and pricey work how will you respond if the unexpected occurs? There's too many plumbers in Brooklyn to endure unprofessional nastiness - if this is his behavior before doing the work I can't imagine how horrible he will be at handling anything that may go wrong. Previous reviewers have noted just how bad he is at addressing your concerns when you aren't happy. It isn't even about the $200 since I don't mind spending for quality work on my home this is about character and it's just not worth the risk that this guy does inferior work and then treats you with disregard after you've spent your money.
Ally D.They are great! Helped my roommate and I with a toilet emergency! Speedy and super nice!
