My central A/C units stopped working. Spoke to Hofmeister representative on Tuesday afternoon. Repair person told me they would be working in my town the following morning and they would come by to diagnose the problem. Since he was already in Cresskill, there was certainly no great inconvenience to come to me. The repair person was there the following morning, as agreed.
In the interim between speaking to them on Tuesday and when the repair person came by, I went online and was able to diagnose the problem. I was pretty confident in the diagnosis.
So when the repair person came by, I told him what I thought it was and he was able to do the repair by replacing a $15-$20 part in about 15 minutes. He then gave me a bill for $350. (reduced from $375 because I asked).
While the repair was done as I had hoped, in my opinion the charge was outrageous.

If you care about paying what's fare and not being overcharged do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. We have used this service for 25 years and have always felt they charged to much but what happened most recently was beyond the pale. A simple $10 plastic connecter that took 5 minutes to replace and we were charged $250. Yes the worker had to leave to pick up the part and return but the supply house was 3 miles away and the entire service with leaving and coming back took less than 30 minutes. We will never use Hofmeister agian and recommend you not use them either.

I had a hot water heater problem and Hofmeister Plumbing replaced it and fixed the problem in record time. They also did a great job installing my air condition system. Good guys with quality service and the work is handled right away. Highly recommended.

Performed illegal unpermitted installation of HWH & furnace that failed inspection.
First claimed they'd never done the install even thought they filed retro permits that remain open on my property. Then when the systems failed inspection, refused to remedy and denied they'd ever installed -- despite filing permits.

In addition, they have exhibited their incompetence in the most basic of plumbing function.
Stay away.

After using this company 16 months ago for a complete drain cleanout from basement to street, called them again for a few minor services. Unfortunately the technician never showed on the scheduled day. Called 3.5 hours late and left a message. Called him back the next day to reschedule and set appointment for the following day. To this day (3 weeks) have never heard from them. Thinking of sending them a bill for time off I took for the original appointment.

Will not use them again and will make sure people in town know about this. Unfortunate too as my drain needs another clean out. Could've been another $850.00........

I had an unexpected water main break this evening. Harold did an efficient job late at night to get the main line repaired and working. So far so good!

Had a hot water heater go south the other day,...yup flooded,.. but not as bad as it could have been. Called Hofmeister Plumbing, a young guy Harold and another guy showed up And just like the girl who answered the phone said,... they actually showed up,... on time,..like she said. JOB DONE. THANK GOD. They even got down on there knees to help clean up the wet floor, even after I told them not too. If you have ever experienced a cold shower, you won't ever have to do it again.

Price was reasonable,..worked with my budget, (unfortunately..ugh)...but the family can take hot showers, so I'm safe for now.

This was the review I posted on Angies.

This review is review is only for HVAC/heating, but if it is any indication, I would NOT trust this company. Longer review below for those interested. Ironically, this review could have gone a completely different way...or not. I am under the impression that most reviewers just don't have enough information. I would have given A's across the board for being on time, etc, if I had done what he had said..and he fixed the problem. But, in this case, it wouldn't have solved the problem....I know this, because I got my problem fixed and had 3 other opinions.
Mike and his helper showed up to our apartment after a night of no heat and temperatures dropping into frigid territory. His response was quick and he was very fast with his responses via phone. He was punctual and spent less than 5 minutes trying to see what was wrong with furnace. He than proceeded to tell me I needed a new furnace and that this one was 12 years old (he was right on that it was 12 years old, as he called someone to check the date of the furnace). I asked him how much a new furnace would be, and he quoted 2900. ""That's a good price for a new furnace"". I'm sure it is...the problem is, did I need a new furnace? He also kept saying I would not find a better price and that they were the #1 rated on Angie's List....
I asked him how much it would have cost to fix just the parts that needed to be fixed. He quoted me $700 to repair the parts and said that wasn't the right way to go b/c then the next part would fail and you would have to pay for more and then you aren't even sure when the furnace is going to go. It'll cost you another $700 next year for the control board, etc... It sounded good, but I had to make sure.
I called 3 other HVAC guys, and all of them were incredulous that someone had told me I needed a new furnace considering that my furnace still generated heat. It was just turning on and off every 3 minutes. The unit was giving a signal that told us to replace the negative pressure switches. If that wasn't the problem, the replacing the control board would probably fix it.
Considering that it would have cost $700 to fix those 2 parts (someone else quoted less than $200), or fixing a control board (quote of $150), I'm pretty sure these guys are completely over charging. On top of that, I didn't need a new furnace....and having other's walk me through the fix, I know that they wouldn't have solved the problem with a new furnace and I would have an experience similar to the F rated reviews on 3/20/14 and 10/26/14. Look them up. The one on 3/20 talks about them overcharging, and him fixing the problem himself. I think this quote brings it up best.
""The tech was a nice guy, I had no problem trusting him in my house when I wasn't home. I do however think that he was inexperienced in working on my furnace, and ridiculous in his pricing.""

We were saved by Hofmeister plumbing!! The owner Harold arrived at our house, where we had endured an interior Niagra Falls all evening. A pipe that had been repaired in our bathroom by another plumber several months ago was leaking. While the original plumber said he could not get to it until Wednesday- despite our house having no water-- Hofmeister came immediately, with reinforcements. In fact, when the outside United Water valve to our house broke and our house was about to flood, Hofmeister and colleagues were able to stanch the flow by pinching the pipe. They are terrific, and certainly had a much better attitude than our original plumber.

I called Hofmeister Plumbing this morning and by 11:30am (2 hours later) a technician was at my house. Fabio, great name right?!, was so nice and helpful. We just bought a house so we walked through some of the plumbing and heating issues. I was given a price for everything upfront. He explained different options and costings. We had a very clogged tub that we inherited when we bought the home that was unclogged in 15 minutes as well as the tub being cleaned before he left. We had a couple other projects that parts needed to be ordered for. We haven't had that work (heating related) done yet but I'll update if not satisfactory. In the end they were reasonably priced for the detailed service and kind customer service. $185 to unclog the tub.
