We called HD Johnson desperate to have our central air conditioning system repaired in the midst of a pandemic and weeks of 90-degree heat. We called about a dozen other companies and they either didn't call back or didn't follow through. HD Johnson was recommended to us by an HVAC pro in Chevy Chase. Only HD Johnson returned calls and understood what was going on with our system (previous installer put the wrong coolant into the unit!).
The technician, Salomon, arrived on time, wearing a mask and prepared to do the job as discussed on the phone. The description of the work on the receipt was thorough and detailed, no surprises or omissions. It took 3.5 hours to correct the issue, but when he was done, we had beautiful, glorious cold air! Thank you, thank you, thank you HD Johnson! We will call again when in need of these services!

Do NOT hire HD Johnson. We had a sewer backup and were referred to HD Johnson and they came out (after hour rates), snaked and allegedly found the stoppage - charged $1,700. We cleaned up and went about our business. A mere 12 days later our sewage backed up again - this time worse - and so we called HD Johnson because we assumed this had to be connected to the earlier stoppage (our mistake to assume they would stand by their work). They sent a second crew out, snaked again but this time found that tree roots had caused the blockage. Second charge: $1,700. After the work was done and when asked why the first crew did not find the tree roots, they did not have an answer. They also said that the first visit was meant to be ""a temporary fix"" but they never told us that. The bottom line is that they first crew did not do a thorough job; we believe tree roots did not grow in 12 days and puncture the sewer line, and HD Johnson would not stand by their work. As a result of the second sewage backup, we have had to engage a mitigation firm and are looking at upwards of $20,000 of repairs and restoration. Absolutely would not recommend HD Johnson.

Dave Johnson came out to look at a blockage in our sink pipe. He spent an hour and forty minutes trying to fix it, and wasn't able to. Even when he was working, he was totally slow. He then spent another 40 minutes sitting in his truck, and tried to charge us for that time. In fact, when he finally emerged from his truck, he asked me ""Are you a lawyer?"" (I assume because he wanted to overcharge us), and gave us a bill for $1,225. That was more than double the amount we owed. When I pointed this out, he claimed he made a mistake because his ""calculator broke."" He then revised the bill, and slipped in an extra hour of labor costs, which we didn't spot when we paid it. We had to cancel the check and have the HD Johnson office fix the bill. He also charged us over $100 for equipment costs, but never told us he was planning to replace anything. Finally, he can't communicate effectively, and when you ask him questions about the work or the bill, he gives incoherent two-word answers.

We finally got the bill mostly fixed with the office, but I understand that he began telling his office that he worked for 3 hours on the job, when in fact he worked for an hour and 40 minutes. They still charged us for more time than he worked in the final bill.

So, F minus for this company in terms of ethics, competence and communication.

Made an appointment with H D Johnson on Friday for someone to come on Monday to repair a leaking pipe in the bathroom. No one came between 12-4 pm which was the window given and when I phoned the company at 4.15 pm no one was there! Called another company (Flowright) who sent someone almost immediately on the Tuesday. Never heard anything back from H. D Johnson so would certainly not use them again or recommend them to anyone.

Years ago they installed a furnace for me at a reasonable price. Recently our AC went out and I knew it needed to be replaced. I called another company and they just gave me an estimate, HD Johnson actually looked at the unit, diagnosed the problem and fixed it. The guy came after hours, worked late and got the AC going. They may have given me another year with the unit but they also gave me a better price to replace.

I've had H.D. Johnson to our home in Kent three times. Twice for plumbing service and once for emergency service. My experience in all three occasions was extremely positive. For the standard services Paul was very cost effective and only fixed what he needed to. The emergency service wasn't inexpensive, but was worth the price. I'll definitely be going back for future work. It's also an added bonus that they're in the neighborhood.

The most unprofessional company I've ever dealt with in any field. We failed our first plumbing inspection for the new bathroom we are adding on. On two occasions, the technician never showed up. No one called to tell us he was not coming. The owner would not return phone calls. When I finally did reach him mid day, he was rude. One one occasion, the technician arrived an hour and a half late then left mid day to go to another job. On the final day of plumbing fixture installation, the technician took twice as long to do the job as is customary, according to my GC. And, there were items left unfinished because of lame excuses, ie. his saw blade was too dull to cut off the bolts which attach a new toilet. He did not have an O ring to stop the leak in a new shower head ( which presumably came with an O ring that was lost ). He lost parts that were in the box of a brand new toilet. STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AS POSSIBLE!

The technicians were fine, although late and unprepared (had to return to the shop for parts even though I said the toilet fill valve and possibly flapper needed replacement when I made the service call). What was ridiculous was the cost -- $203 dollars for a simple toilet repair. I don't mind paying for the technicians time (1/2 hour at $125) BUT to pay $75 for parts & supplies when you can pick up a kit at any hardware for store for $15-20 is outrageous. I called them because they are located 2 blocks from my house. Never again. I'll go back to the plumbers I usually use, who travel nearly an hour to provide service at half the cost.

They were a no-show to an appointment. When I called, I was told that the plumber showed up and nobody was home (except I was home the entire day). Never got a call, just missed the appointment and took a day off of work for nothing.

HD Johnson has given us terrible service both with our heating last winter and our A/C this summer. After being regular clients for years, over time we got mediocre service (and costly bills), I finally called their office this month to discuss the lingering technical issues we still have with them. I got lame excuses in return and now a threat to have my pending bill to collection. HD Johnson has been a huge disappointment. They used to be professional. Now they are just taking clients for granted and doing very poor quality work - still charging high prices. ( I am posting a negative review on Yelp for the first time ever.)
