Positive: Tech was on time, friendly, did a good job and did the job an hour quicker than the quote. He also took away the old unit.
Negative: I was glad the tech was here when I received the quote for the job as he had to pick me up off the floor. I let him do the work as he was here and I didn't want to wait days to get another installer. They got my money this time, but never again.

Hank's was sent out when our HVAC company accidentally stepped through the ceiling of one of our bedrooms. The HVAC company would be paying for it so we weren't too concerned. The work done was good however the project took way longer than any other patch job we've ever had. i was so irritated when he took an 2 hours to color match the ceiling paint - only for me to see that there was no color added - he made a big deal about getting the right shade of white. The patch work done was good , ironically the paint color didn't match but I didn't want them coming back out - I can only imagine how expensive it would have been if we had to pay. When I asked for a quote on the other drywall project he assured us we would get multiple estimates... 2 months later, no communication, no estimates.

A week later, we were informed of an issue with our stove vent and so out of ease we called them back out and this experience was icky. The tech they sent was adamant that we needed a new ladder to get into the attic and was very theatrical about it. We had a half dozen men up there just the week before replacing our HVAC ducts with not a single word said - red flag. So he goes up there to check and states it will cost $1800 to vent the stove's hood to the roof. He was polite but we were not impressed with the initial interaction with the ladder - we were also told initially that this shouldn't be over $1000 - red flag.

So, we had another company come out and they were shocked we were quoted that for the work that was needed. We literally needed an extender to connect everything - which led us to believe that Hanks capitalizes on the fact that we hadn't gone up and looked at things ourself. We obviously went with the second company and won't use Hank's for any estimate or work. We were extremely turned off by the lack of honesty which made us question their integrity and core values.

BEWARE. They quoted me $382 to caulk a tub. I knew it sounded high and I was probably getting ripped off. After getting my check UP FRONT (no service has EVER asked me to pay ahead of a job!) , I asked why am I having to pay ahead of the service being completed? The tech said sometimes they don't get paid if they don't collect up front, which makes me think perhaps people have been unhappy with their work. I then asked why the price was so high. The service guy said the price was that high because I asked for the "best" caulk they have, but they do not have the best caulk on the truck and it would require him to leave for 25 minutes to buy it and return. The caulk that is cheapest (on their truck) is $204 and not waterproof (its for a tub!). I had a bad feeling about the whole transaction. I told the tech I've decided against using them, and got my $382 check back. Again, warning, their price for a tub caulk job is questionable and they want payment UPFRONT for "small" jobs. And, if you write a check, they want your drivers license number. I paid the $39 trip charge and sent the guy on. I would not recommend this company at all.

Deck work. They kept having excuses as to why they would not be there for weeks, They would get some done then be gone for a week. Well we have other jobs. Hey I am a job, then COVID came and that was their grandest excuse. $50, 000 not FIVE THOUSAND FIFTY. I did get Covid and was in hospital for weeks and then they spent the next two years telling me the government is not allowing work. I am like, my neighbors have outside workers, they said no. Then to cap it off after Covid Marty said. Sorry it was only a 2 year guarantee. I said wait wait does that not start when you job is done? He said no it starts from the last time we came there. WTH? DO NOT USE.-UPDATE according to the person who called Hank's was sold. They are coming out 10/09/2024 to look at deck but on a side note they said again, well the warranty expired. Still I don't think a warranty should START until the job is done. but I will 100% update and post new photos if they are a stand up company.

I contacted Hank's after they were recommended by another handyman service. Our mailbox post was broken from neglected dry rot and needed to be dug out and replaced. Since it had already been almost a week of me trying to find a contractor to take the job (and no mail delivery in that time due to the box laying on the ground), Hank's said they could do it but it would be another four days before they could give me an estimate. By this point I had made peace with likely having to overpay since they would be my first estimate and I needed the job done as soon as possible. I wasn't able to be home at the time they had available so my wife met the technician and approved the work.
The work itself looks good and took about four hours. The invoice was $1299 which was definitely higher than I was expecting and beyond what I had budgeted for the job. We also requested a quote to restain our fence which is about 150 linear feet. The estimate was $3500 which is certainly outside our budget and in the low end of the fence replacement estimates I've received. I did not receive itemized quotes for either job, just a single line item with a price.

I have never used Hanks but seems like a very well run company....I see many folks complaining about the trip charge that's waved if one uses their services, I think we've been spoiled with "free estimates for the last 50 years...having a trip charge is the new norm...as a matter of fact, I would question a well managed company that doesn't have one....I also noticed some negative reviews, about some of the smaller projects, allegedly way overpriced...."I could do it myself, I just don't have the time"....we think the projects are easy, "in your mind it's easy"...most homeowners don't have the skill set or the tools.

Through many exhaustive studies, price is # 6 in the buying decisions, it's better to invest more than you plan than spend less than you should, when you invest more than planned, carried out over time, it's pennies, but often, when we spend less than we should, we lose it all......I'm not sure about Texas , but where I am I hear folks say things like "I set estimates and no one showed", or "I receive 3 estimates but no one has gotten back to me"

Ghosting has become the norm....especially on smaller projects,

I'm not saying that sometimes we overpay, but if we get a quality job backed by a warranty, that's honored, then it's really pennies over time.

My tech was Brandon Herreros and he was on time and got the job done early and in a professional manner. I would highly recommend Hank's Handyman Services, they are very affordable and very dependable.

We called them a week ago. Their first available time was today. We needed 2 tiles redone in our bathroom. With a straight face, the person that came out quoted us over $700. Within an hour of them leaving we contacted another handyman who came today and fixed it for $150. Don't use this company.

John V. is the BEST! My back door had become literally impossible to close. John diagnosed exactly what the issues were (settling, sagging, and faulty weather-strip installation), and quickly took care of the repairs in a professional manner. I have become so tired of sloppy workmen leaving some sort of damage with each repair, but I am very happy to have found someone I can actually know will do the job right. He did a walk-around to look at other much-needed repairs and gave me a quote for the jobs. Words can't express the relief to have found someone I can trust to do the work! Thank you, John!
