Company Overview

Gundlach's is dedicated to the repair and restoration of classic homes, fixtures, and advanced systems. We provide plumbing services for all needs, drain clearing, and water heater installations and repairs. Our heating services encompass all furnace varieties, including wall, floor, split, and package units. Our air conditioning services include repairs and installations. We cater to both residential and commercial clients.

Gundlach's Plumbing was founded in 1900 by Max Gundlach Jr. and A.C. Wroot. In 1927, I. Rees Jones entered the business, contributing to the introduction of air conditioning services.

In 1941, the Jones family took full ownership of the company.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Gundlach's emerged as a leading mechanical contractor in the area, completing significant projects like Minter Field, Memorial Hospital's maternity ward, and various local schools.

In April 2004, the family-run business was sold by Trent Jones to Ken and Shelly Wonderly. Ken, who had spent more than twenty years in the field, had worked for some of the largest mechanical contractors in the nation.

Thanks to Ken's direction, we have enhanced our cutting-edge plumbing and air conditioning offerings. We build on a rich legacy, providing customers with ""today's technology and good old-fashioned integrity.""

Ken received his initial training at Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix. He furthered his education at the Local 250 Union school, becoming a certified journeyman technician and later teaching there for five years. His career progression took him from technician to project lead and eventually to management. In 2004, he took ownership of Gundlach's Plumbing and Sheet Metal Company. With over 35 years in the industry, he possesses extensive knowledge of various equipment and leads Gundlach's in providing efficient and courteous service. Under Ken's ownership, Gundlach's continues to embrace ""today's technology with good old-fashioned integrity.""

We needed to have our main sewer line unclogged. Was told someone would be at our home between 3:00 -600 pm. Fernando was at our home by 3:00. My husband was told there would be a service call fee of 49.00 dollars and a flat rate fee. Beware Fernando was at our home for only 45 minutes Max and we were charged $266.00. When we have used some else it is usually less than $125.00 or less.

We called and got set up on the service plan they have, trying to be good owners. Our AC unit had NO issues (it was inspected during our escrow). Upon the first AC service we were told nothing was wrong with our AC unit but we had wires that were burnt and would have caused our AC to catch on fire; so of course we paid the 130 to have it fixed because it's our home. Then he left, didn't go over anything.
Fast forward 2 months to now. Our AC goes out. It's 106 and humid in Bakersfield, our house is quickly going from 72, to 89.
They charge me a service fee (even though I pay for a plan) to come out and asses. The guy tells us we need a new AC unit which would be about 15k and weeks to order. Said we had holes in our coils, no refrigerant, our fan was broken, and the compressor is blown, said there was nothing he could do but get us in contact with sales or get us a pricey quote to fix it but it would be better to get a new unit. We have two young kids at home along with dogs and needed this fixed ASAP.
We started calling around. After having someone come out, it was a simple fix of a new fan motor. He said the fan had been unplugged by someone (it isn't a part that just comes unplugged easily), and it caused the motor to burn up.
Stated our coils and compressors worked perfectly with no issues and that there was plenty of refrigerant in there. Stated he would need to order us new fan blades but we could have our AC up and working just fine until the new blades come in. It cost us 800 for the fix, and our house went from 90 degrees to 73 within 2 hours.
I have called Gundlach's all morning for answers / refunds for services, and no one has called back, or had any answers for me other than they'll take my number down.
I'll follow up with more updates once I have them.

Wow! Came same day I called in 105 degree weather and AC was broken. Called another reputable company who had a 5 day wait which was unacceptable. I was prepared for the worst and would have believed just about anything they told me as I've had problems in the past. I also thought I would have an enormous cost, but the technician was as honest and fair as they come! Gundlach showed up and fixed the problem in less than 45 minutes and the charge was only 50$! Integrity and professionalism , this place gets my Highest recommendation!! The office staff is excellent and nice too!

I used to use the Homeowners insurance which provided the absolute worst company's with weeks long wait and they knew nothing and charged thousands and had to keep coming back over and over for weeks on end! I even had one who tried to steal the replacement unit that the insurance had provided and they still didn't fix the problem!!

Gundlach also has a monthly maintenance service where they change filters and clean unit in preparation for heating etc! I will definitely use this as Gundlach is the most honest HVAC service I've ever experienced!! They saved the day!!! Love this place it's a dream come true!!! They've been around a long long time and it's evidence of the quality of service!!!

This is my update on Gundlach's. After my complaint with the California State Licensing Board (CSLB), Gundlach's is under Administrative Legal Review, both company's were fined and notified now awaiting legal court action. This is public record for ALL to see on the CSLB website. I bet Gundlach's wished they used competent employees and followed through with better customer service!!! Instead, they ignored my complaints, made threats and abandoned the job after I discovered all the shortcuts and complained about incompetent and inexperienced employees they used.

in reply to their 'fabricated' response, first  I would like to  note,  that only a wk later I went to change the filter in my AC unit and the 'inside' of the AC unit was absolutely FILTHY!!...something that i never experience with any prior service visit!....so this 'newbee' they sent me did absolutely nothing regarding 'cleaning/servicing' my unit....so not only does this person have no brains...as you can read below (to stand right in front of a sign posted on my back door that says 'no back door access...use front door ONLY, yet he doesn't bother knocking at the FRONT door...like NORMAL people would...and just is ready to drive off!), but he is the laziest service rep I have ever dealt with (and this owners(?) stating there were prior issues with other service visits are fabricated...i never had ANY issues with ANY other service reps in all the years of doing business with this co......makes me think this 'lazy newbee' was some relative of someone in the co.!). Anyway, GLAD TO BE RID of suck an UNPROFESSIONAL service!

this was my husband's reply to owner(s) letter of cancellation, that gave us no reason as to why cancelling (and now only getting a fabricated one!):

on the June service visit here, my wife informed me that the driver went to the back door instead of the front (where on the Back door a large sign is clearly posted stating: ""Use Front Door ONLY - Back Door is NOT Accessible"", and that sign is not only directly on the back door, but also on the Front of the house that one can clearly SEE as you MUST walk by it to get to the back door, yet your service rep chose to just ignored these signs). Since the back door cannot be opened, my wife waited for him to READ the signs, and come to the front door, instead he got into his truck and she heard him starting to drive away!  She had to immediately run outside in her stocking feet to be able to stop him in time from leaving, so naturally she was upset asking why he can't read signs, and why he wouldn't 'naturally' come around to the front door? He had nothing but excuses that made zero sense....saying: 'didn't know if you still wanted the appointment', and  'I didn't see a car so thought no one was home' (... really?? that was his 'excuse' for being too lazy to knock on the front door?...we only own ONE car, and it's what gets me to my job, so WHY would there necessarily be another car in the driveway?), plus who automatically goes to a back door of a house they've never been to, instead of knocking on the FRONT?

My wife said nothing more to him after hearing such ridiculous excuses (thinking there was something wrong with this guy -plus he later was irritated because he had to use the FRONT door when coming in and out, due to the back door being unusable)...which was never an issue for all the service people we had prior, and who KNEW their job and were very nice as well (re: there was NEVER ANY issues when these service people were here, like this owner NOW is fabricating). So my wife just waited for him to do the cleaning, and she even asked him if he wanted a cold drink or water, because it was so hot that day, and he had to be outside part of the time. That is 'hardly' the basis of  someone being 'unfriendly on multiple occasions', as you claim, (rather, from his actions, this is obviously a man who doesn't like his job).

She also told me, after he finally was done, that it appeared (re: being the 'only logical explanation' of his actions/comments) that you sent some newbie out this time round (instead of the regular guys we had before) because this one spent most of his time on the phone asking for advice, so this would also explain his apparent laziness to just want to immediately drive off, instead of even coming to the front door in the first place. I suggested she file a complaint about him to the company, and she declined and said that maybe he'd get his 'act' together for the next customer, so what good would complaining about it do anyway - he'd only deny it all (which I can see now by your canceling our service, is exactly what he did).  She told me she even thanked him when he left, which is something I certainly wouldn't have bothered doing, after his urgency to just drive off on her in the first place.

So if that is how you do business, by stressing out customers via sending out people who don't know what they are doing, who are in such a hurry to not want to do the job they were booked for, and who apparently aren't even happy with their job in the first place (instead of sending us the 'regular/educated' service guys who came before - they are the ones who don't just try to drive off' but instead take the time to read the posted sign(s) & use logic by going to the Front door ...not a person's Back door, which isn't even the norm when coming to someone's house, especially for the first time) ,  then we certainly don't want to 'give' you our business either, and we will certainly advise others to avoid your services at all cost

I had problems with my thermostat in my new condo. They came out the next day after I called and diagnosed the problem right away. It was the incorrect thermostat for my type of heater. They came out the next day with my replacement unit. Wonderful and professional job done.

I reached out to Gundlach because they did some HVAC work for my parents and my parents said the work was not perfect but better than another company that they had gone with previously.

I gave a second star because Henry who came out and looked everything over for me was incredibly polite, thorough, and informative. He explained everything to me and made sure I understood and provided me with a clear quote that itemized everything very well.

That being said I can't help but be completely confused with the pricing of this company. I requested a quote for a new central AC unit and any other duct work that might be needed. After everything was checked out it was recommended I get the new unit, had new insulation done, add one more duct run to the other side of my living room, and repair the ducting in my kitchen and remove the non-functional swamp cooler from the roof. The total quote for a 1 day project came out to over $20,000...holy crap batman.

I had another company come out and give me a quote for the exact same work minus the new duct run. They did all the exact same work for under $13,000 and didn't charge me a dime for the swam cooler removal (Gundlach wanted $900 for that.) I got a better unit than Gundlach offered me, the new one I got is a 2-speed, the 2-speed option from Gundlach was an additional $1,000 on top of the original quote.

Henry is a great salesman and seems to be an honest guy but I cannot understand where Gundlach's prices come from and why they are so insanely high. Their financing also came in a 6% for the duration of the loan, I got 0% from the company I ended up going with. Just too expensive for what is being done in my opinion.

Buyer beware!!!!! Smile in your face and rob you for your money. I have 3 disabledpeople in my home and my tank less water heater went out. The gentleman told me the lowest he could do it was for $4000. Being that I needed hot water for my 2 children I trusted what he was saying. I found out 2 days later that they overcharged me by $1500 over any other company for the same exact work. It's really sad that people feel that it's OK to rob people like that and stead of try to get repeat customers. I've loved multiple messages for the owners or at least a manager of a call me and Obviously I'm not important enough to get a return Phone call. I just think it's pretty disgusting $1500 is a lot of money for a lot of people and the fact that you can gouge people that badly should say something about your company or a head lease or sells people that come out and do the work. Thanks again
