Appreciated the thoughtful follow up from Mike today about my original complaint. He seemed genuinely interested in doing the right thing.

I would not use these guys, ever again. Was quoted $1000 for repair on the phone but they said they needed to come out first. Rude serviceman told me to leave the room. Then quoted me over double for repair, wasted $175. Am looking elsewhere...

I've never written a bad review in my life but feel the need to in this case to warn others. I called Greenwood Heating & Air to come out and take a look at my old boiler that had been dripping water most of last year. They told me it would be $150 for the diagnostics and then any repairs would be on top of that. Ok, fair enough. The technician was here for about 15 minutes and told me I needed a new pressure relief valve but that they would have to order the part. Ok, fine. Until I got the estimate on what replacing a $35 pressure relief valve was going to cost me! Yikes! Over $500!!! Seriously?! I tell him that I'm not too pleased with that price and may look elsewhere. He also warned me that another part on my system was going to need replacing soon but said it was fine at the moment. He said that part was $400 just for the part (I found this part too and it's actually just $35 as well)

Well, turns out I managed to replace the pressure relief valve by myself for just the cost of the $35 part with about 20 minutes of my time. But you know what....that wasn't my problem. It took me only 5 minutes to realize what the actual problem was. Not only had Greenwood Heating & Air tried to rip me off by charging an exorbitant amount of money they also misdiagnosed my leaky boiler. AND my $150 quote for diagnostics turned out to actually be $175 when I got the bill. $175 I paid for absolutely nothing, just mistakes and misinformation. I wonder how much I would have ended up spending if I had let them replace the $35 part (to the tune of $500+) only to still have the same leaky problem! I'm sure they would have then told me I had another problem and charged me even more to fix that one too!

I can't blame the technician for their pricing as I know he doesn't have any control over that, but I can blame him for the faulty diagnosis which was a big waste of my money and time.

I cannot recommend hiring this company for anything.

I would not recommend them.My AC stopped working after simple tune-up.They said it is thermostat issue which was working fine until they touched the system.I was quoted $400-500 to get it fixed. Now I am without Ac in Summer.

Do you ever get the feeling that perhaps you have been taken advantage of? Well, to my disappointment I feel Greenwood Heating and Air Conditioning has taken advantage of me. About 18 or 19 years ago Greenwood Heating and Air Conditioning installed a furnace and gas water heater for me and I was quite satisfied. Being a former happy customer Greenwood Heating and Air Conditioning was the company I called when it was necessary to replace that water heater. The salesman came out to my place, looked at the old water heater and told me the price to replace it would be $1428. I was expecting a cost of perhaps $700 to $800, needless to say I was quite taken back at such a high price especially since this was not an urgent job. But, as a salesman told me, prices for water tanks have gone up considerably since the previous one was installed. Well, I figured, I need a water tank and Greenwood Heating and Air Conditioning is a reputable company so I went ahead and signed a contract and had the new water tank installed the following day.

Now that I have recovered sufficiently from the initial shock I've done a little research into the retail prices of the items installed:

State GS6 40 YRRT 300 Water Tank - $325.00
Amtrol THERM-X-TROL ST-5 Expansion Tank - $41.99
Total Parts - $366.99
These are retail prices, not dealer cost prices.

That leaves - $1,061.01 for labor. Perhaps I'm wrong but $400 to $500 an hour for labor seems rather exorbitant.

6-17- 2013
As a follow-up I did get a call from a sales manager this morning and as a result of our conversation the charge was reduced to $1204.50, $600 for parts, (though I figured $366.99), $500 for labor plus, of course, sales tax of $104.50. The result of my complaint - a savings of $223.50.

We decided to have a central AC system in our house and after asking around, we picked Greenwood because their lower price and seemingly professional personals. But it turned out the installation experience was awful.

Two days before the installation, they sent two folks to my house for the paperwork and measurements. Everything went fine and one guy did some measurements in my garage and mostly around the furnace. They explained to me that the indoor unit of the AC will come underneath the furnace. I was told the installation guy from Greenwood and the electrician from another company will arrive around 8AM on the installation day (which is a Friday), and everything will be done before 4PM.

So I took one day off work for the installation. Got up early in the morning and cleared up the garage. Around 830AM, the electrician showed up, and started his work. Not bad at all so far but things started to turn worse from here. The Greenwood installation folk didn't show up until 10AM, 2 hours late. After getting here, he looked around, and told me confidently that the installation wouldn't take so long and he can have everything done in around 5 hours. Well, that's still before 4PM so it's Ok.

He then started working. Around 1PM, I came to the garage and wanted to check with him whether he needs anything. He was making a call and had a weird look on his face. Hanging up the phone, he told me that he cannot finish the work today because the measurements they did two days ago went wrong and didn't take into account of the angle of some pipes. So he took the hook with the wrong size with him and there is not enough room for the indoor unit of the AC. I asked him whether someone else from the company can send a new hook here, he said no because they are under staffed and even we could get a new one today, there is no way for him to finish the work..blablabla.... And the only option I had is to take another day off and they will come back next week to finish the remaining work!!

My time is valuable and there is no such a thing that I can take off work or leave early freely. For companies like Greenwood, installation should be the very basic thing that they handle, and they cannot make it right. After realizing the issue, they don't try to resolve it in a way which is most convenient to the customer.

Well they came back the following week and had the rest of the work done, but my wife had to leave work early for it. And we never want to deal with Greenwood in the future.

My current furnace has a 4"" pipe for ventilation. All the townhomes within my community do. And - all of the furnaces vent through the roof. The representative from Greenwood immediately starts to tell me that a 4"" metal exhaust will not work with a replacement furnace and that I will need to replace it AND the piping that vents through to the roof with a 5"" because that is code. My immediate reaction was he is full of crap. If code indicates a 5"" exhaust should be used, he's indicating that all 209 unites within my complex were installed incorrectly and that you'd have to cut through sheetrock and flooring to replace the entire venting to make it ""up to code"".

I should state that the whole purpose for getting them out to due a quote was that was trying to beat the Federal Furnace Efficiency law that was taking effect 5/01/2013. Guess what!?! the Department of Energy (DOE) has agreed to withdraw the pending minimum energy conservation standards and essentially is delaying the effective date until 2015. This was determined January 11th of this year. But you'd think Greenwood would have said this to me. Not so, in fact, they tried to get more money from me.

Washington State has defined any house built after July 1986 as being ""unusually tight construction."" Homes built before that time are normally considered ""ordinary construction,"" unless the house was upgraded with weather stripping and insulation and air leaks were sealed. Washington has adopted, and will soon be enforcing, the International Mechanical Code. Under this code, the requirements for combustion air are the same as those under the Uniform Mechanical Code.

The ventilation system is determined by the number of CPU's that your furnace produces. In ordinary construction, where gravity warm-air or fan-assist furnaces will be installed in a mechanical room, two required openings of 1 sq. inch per 1,000 BTUs of fuel input are required, one located 12 inches off the floor and the other within 12 inches of the ceiling. Gravity warm-air or fan-assisted furnaces are those appliances that vent out through the roof--normally through a chimney--and do not bring in combustion air from the outside. The Uniform Mechanical Code states that in unusually tight construction (houses build , vented appliances can be installed in a mechanical room if the room contains at least 50 cubic feet of volume for each 1,000 BTUs of fuel input. A combustion air opening can be sized at 1 sq. inch per 3,000 BTUs of fuel input. This opening must be in the upper 12 inches of the room and needs to freely communicate with the outdoors.

A 90% furnace is vented using PVC and there is a build up of condensation which the pump provided will get rid of it or they will run a small 3/4 inch tube to a drain nearby.

I am replacing my 80% furnace with another 80%!

Don't use Greenwood - they are unethical and dishonest.

Gosh, I saw all these terrible posts. I am quite surprised. I have used Greenwood for over 10 years and have nothing but good things to say. They are on time, provide great service and are competitively priced. I have an annual service contract with them. They are good about insuring my furnace is inspected and maintained annually at no additional costs and the service contract provides discounts. Generally, I never buy a service contract or a 'warranty'. I made an exception in this case and I am glad I did. Well worth the money. I'd give them five stars, but hey, I don't give out a lot of five stars.

That is the lowest rate I can give, if I can I will give negative.

I got a furance problem at my unit and call them to take a look at it. There were three technicians came in, who diagnoses out three completely different problems from the same furnace. And each of them think their found the right problem. Of course the cost of those problem from 200 to 400 and then to $1200! What a miracle! I paid $400 bucks with furance still broken.

What they said were totally untrustable and techician has way different experiences. I would never recommand this company to anybody. I was so supprised that it was came in as recommanded.

If you're looking to spend $1,600 on a problem that can be fixed for $1.49, then Greenwood is the place to go. If you prefer an honest, competent business, look elsewhere!

I have an electric furnace with a blower that wouldn't shut off, even when the unit wasn't calling for heat. Greenwood came out and said we needed a new control board - $200. That didn't solve the problem. Then they said we needed to have our ducts cleaned. Being a trusting sucker, I paid them another $600 for that ""service"". Still didn't solve the problem. Their next recommendation was that I give them another $800 so they could cut a hole in my wall and make an extra cold air return. No thanks.

A couple months later, my dad was visiting from Illinois and I shared my frustrating experience. He called his trusty heating company back home. At no charge over the phone, they recommended putting in a cheap air filter ($1.49 instead of the $10 ones that are good for allergies). Solved the problem instantly! Our furnace is too sensitive to use the strong filters, which is apparently a common problem. Greenwood either should have known this simple solution, which makes me think they are incompetent, or they knew this solution and chose not to share it in lieu of collecting $1,600 from an unsuspecting client.

I called the owner to offer them an opportunity to make the situation right before writing this review, but my call was not returned.
