The service tech was a real bonehead. Tracked mud in on my new carpet and pretty sure he was smoking a cigarette in the basement (I don't smoke in the house).
I mean I guess he got the work done but come on! I'll probably just go somewhere else next time.
SCAM!!!
Just like alot of other people on here, I feel like they charge way too much for parts. I think they have a markup of up to 900% which is just stupid. I'm sure alot of people feel cheated by this company.
Do not recommend.
The only reason I give them three stars is because they were prompt and the technician was great. The part I had a problem with them are the prices. Had to call them on Thanksgiving weekend and I was ok with paying the extra fee for coming out. The technician found the problem to be in our thermostat. He only had the ""cheaper"" kind which was only programmable not wifi like we had so we said ok install it till we found out they were going to charge us $864 for a thermostat you can get at Lowe's for under $100. Good thing I know someone who could install a new one went to Lowe's and purchased a wifi with Bluetooth and voice control for $169. I can understand that companies have to make money but raising the price almost 9 times is outrageous.
Steven W.I called Great Lake's to have a technician come out to clean flame sensor on my water heater. Service quoted $98 for trip cost and after tech arrived, he spent less than 28 minutes at our home to clean carbon build up off sensor and charged an additional $129 for a total cost of $227. Upon calling Service, was told this is their flat rate established by owner. Outrageous and disappointing for local business with price gouging. Would not recommend.
Very POOR Customer Service. AC not working correctly. First technician came out, thought issue was solved, but was not. They did send a 2nd technician out the next day, and issue solved... almost... Said I needed some duct work, which they could do and someone from the office would call the following week to schedule. The entire week went by, so on Friday of the week, I called and no one was aware that this service needed to be done, with exception of the 2nd tech. They assured me Missy the office manager would call on Monday after the weekend. Wednesday of that week, still no call. I called, after playing phone tag with Missy, and being upset, understandably so... about all the delays, when I finally was able to speak to Missy, NO apology for... sorry for the delay in contacting you, I know you are upset, let me see if we can get you scheduled and your AC issue resolved. None of that, instead, I was told they couldn't do what I needed done. After 2 techs, NO phone calls, and no.... sorry about the confusion, etc. I would run the other direction from this company.
David T.I'm surprised to see low reviews of this place. I've worked with them for years--new AC, new furnace, check-ups. They have NATE-credentialed workers, which many places do not.
The differences? When I needed new AC, I got three on-site estimates. One was a glossy car-salesman-like company, another was an old-family folksy company, and then Great Lakes. The glossy guy I disliked, and it was pricey. The folksy guy I liked, but his knowledge was lacking--he thought my old AC concrete pad would work fine, but the Great Lakes guy said you need a new pad, and also he recommended running a new duct from the basement to upstairs so that cooler air there saves stress on the AC system. I have confidence in this company.
AC unit went out. They say free estimates, but charge 129 to come out after 5pm. Charging to come out and take a look to estimate cost is not a free estimate. They did find the issue and changed the capacitor in the unit. Charged 256 dollars for the part and 130 to come out for a 10 min job. Great lakes rips people off with price gouging. I researched pricing for the replacement part and find out they charged 10 times the price. DO NOT USE GREAT LAKES!!!!!
A/c went out. They charge 129 to come out at night or
98 to come out tomorrow. I said tomorrow is fine. I told them my blower is making all kinds of squeaking noises. Sure enough Dion says 750 for a new blower motor or 5000. 00 for a new furnace. Of course we said blower motor. After researching it my blower motor could be found every where, Lowes, Rural King, etc. For anywhere from 72.00 to 100.00. Also Angies list said 50.00 to come out 100.00 for labor to put in and 100.00 for motor or 250.00 total.max.. she said labor 100.00 to 200.00 max for 300.00 total absolute max.. Well she doesn't know Great Lakes. 98.00 to come out to diagnose. (I told them on phone it was the blower). Then 750.00 more to come out and install little 1/3 hp 115 amp motor. 850.00 total. I wish I'd checked Angies List first cuz she had several companies listed that would honor the 300.00quote, and i would be 550.00 richer and happier. Now i feel bilked, kicked in the stomach and broke and depressed. I have since found out that Great Lakes boost their prices during severe weather. Thanks.
Margaret D.We called Great Lakes Heating and Cooling in October because we were having a problem with our heat pump and furnace. They sent a really nice guy out, he took a quick look at the heat pump, replaced one part and said the job was done. He did not look over our furnace and there was no explanation as to why the part needed to be replaced. The charge was $349.00. The heat pump worked for just a short time. We went out of the country and when we got back, we realized that it was not working again. I called them today to see if they could come back out and look at it again, and was informed that I would be paying a $98.00 trip charge. When I questioned the gal on the phone, she told me that it was because it was over 30 days since the tech was here, so we would have to pay the trip charge again. It seems to me that they would stand behind their work a bit more than this!
Erin F.So, after reading my review the owner of the company took it upon himself to both contact me via yelp and call me to personally apologize. I am still frustrated with the way things ended up, but I am very appreciative of an owner who cares enough to call and personally address any issues. I'm still going with a different company for my duct cleaning, but I am inclined to believe that what happened with me was just a communication breakdown and not indicative of the company as a whole. Would I recommend Great Lakes? I'm not sure - but I certainly won't be warning people away from them.
