Grand Lake Plumbing & Heating
Company Overview
Grand Lake Plumbing & Heating is a family-run business that has been providing exceptional service for close to a century! Since Gus Spitzmiller, a traveling plumber, settled in the Grand Lake area around 1906, we have been meeting the plumbing and heating needs of Grand County.
Upon Gus’s retirement, his son, Gordon Spitzmiller, took over the business. In 1973, Frank Appelhans joined Gordon’s team. After Gordon’s death in 1990, Frank assumed full ownership. Travis and Melissa Appelhans are dedicated to maintaining the Grand Lake Plumbing & Heating heritage.

I interviewed today with three people from this company via a video chat and viewed behavior that led me to believe that they were high on cocaine or meth or something. Also one of the people i talked to had white powder on the bottom of his nose. I had to wait while they figured out how to get the video interview to work. They could not get the audio to work so they had to call my phone to talk to me while watching each other on video. Well, after they ended the video call, they forgot to hang up their cell phone and I got to listen to them immediately start insulting me as a person as well as accusing me of drinking before the interview. I have never dealt with something so unprofessional.

This is a very professional company dedicated to supporting their clients with the very best water quality. Their team is focused on customer service and providing excellent value for money on plumbing, radiant heating and water quality management solutions.

This company has always done right by me. They are very competent and fully explain work needed and rationale.

Well, we called and made an appointment with GLP&H for a gas line installation estimate and water heater inspection At our condo in Winter Park. After the several months delay because of the forest fire, we suddenly received a call from them saying they would come ""tomorrow to install your gas line."" After a bit of panic on our part we cleared that up. We just want an estimate.
We received a call from a service tech the next day He was driving to our place. He was a bit confused as to where he was going and where we were (at home several miles away). As he drove he proceeded to ""sell us smoke"". What I mean is that he said the water heater inspection and service call would be $400 but if we joined their ""membership"" for $120 or so a year the discount on the inspection is considerable, down to $130 or so, and we would receive priority status in an emergency- ha! Along with the several hundred other members.
Alas, we bit and signed up! It had been months since we requested this estinate and inspection.
Long story short, our heater is fine but we have ""emergency stop failure "" imminent on all of our 3 bathroom sinks. In other words ONE of the faucet valves under a sink is stuck and he ""did not test the others in order to prevent possible breakage."" My goodness, what a thoughtful young man! He gave us an estimate of about $400 (after the club membership ""discount"". He never did give us an estimate for the gas line. Watch these guys, they are trained SALESpeople.

Not at all surprised to read any of the one-star ratings others have posted for Grand Lake Plumbing & Heating! Their customer service quality is simply awful. Two years ago they installed a boiler system for us at a price of about $16K, and recommended their plan for annual maintenance, emergency priority, etc. @$155. We stupidly joined up--last November a technician did come for the annual check-up (about $118), but this year they say they can't get to it until sometime in Feb, 2021-- maybe...no promises. IOW, once winter is nearly passed, and if they feel like it then.
The scheduler and the owner have all the usual excuses ready -- COVID, the forest fire, the evacuation, prioritizing emergencies, ... yada, yada, yada. None of it is believable, esp. considering how the owners went away on a ""trip"" (hunting season??) this week. Also, they failed to correct a recall matter that has been pending since July, 2020. They claimed they could not get the part, but we called the manufacture and found out it is readily available through their Denver distributor. Thankfully, the distributor was able to refer us to another, more competent and reliable contractor to get the work done soon.
Don't use Grand Lake-- like us and many other reviewers, you will only regret it!

If your looking for a heating company that's only interested in taking your money, sending a different technician each time they provide a service call, including your yearly inspection, with different diagnosis of the problem from 6 different technicians, look no further!

Most frustrating business in Grand County. Repeatedly ignore messages and when you finally get something scheduled they don't show up. No call, no nothing. When we called to find out what was going on we got ""he won't be able to make it"". No explanation, no apology. Terribly run business with no attention to cultivating new business. They succeed only because there are so few alternatives. If they had to compete in a larger market they would have gone under years ago.

Used Grand Lake Plumbing and heating a few times. Never again. No one knows what they're doing, they came to my house twice to fix a leaky shower. The first time they replaced a gasket and told me they were ordering a part, charged me over 100.00... later I get a call they don't know what part needs ordering, they're sending someone over to look at it again, the gasket they replaced was doing the job and it wasn't leaking but they replaced the gasket again and wanted another 100.00 for it, the next day it was leaking again. I do not ever recommend theses guys, find anyone else.

If you have 2 weeks to wait to have your issue resolved, perhaps Grand Lake Plumbing and Heating would do the job (although they are extremely expensive, certainly more expensive than other options). If, however, you're having a more immediate issue that needs service right away, Grand Lake Plumbing is completely worthless. My sink was backing up in our condo building whenever anyone else in the building ran water so we were using buckets to take water out of the sink so it didn't overflow. Grand Lake Plumbing said they could make it in 12 days! Don't advertise that you do service calls if it takes you almost two weeks to come for an emergency that threatens to flood our kitchen and perhaps entire unit. When I called back a second time to ask if there was anyway to move up the appointment, I was told ""we have other emergencies too so you'll just have to wait your turn."" Wow! They clearly don't care about actually helping their customers, just taking as much money from them as possible. Don't waste your time with them...call someone else (anyone else)!

These guys are awesome. I used them twice this week, once at my shop and once at my house. Jonathan just came by to install a new toilet at my shop. He was so friendly. Great communication! They call before they arrive so you know to expect them and they send an email letting you know they are on their way.
At my house, my heat stopped working so Travis came by to take a look. It's up and running perfectly now. Thank you!! BTW, I tried calling another plumber in town, left two messages and still haven't gotten a call back. As a business owner, it's nice to deal with a professional company like Grand Lake Plumbing & Heating!
