Wish I would have seen these reviews before signing anything, lied about pricing and not willing to give me an itemized statement. You can't get a hold of anyone and make promises they can't keep! Definitely do not recommend this outfit!
Richard K.Had an appoint scheduled for before noon today. I had cleared my schedule and canceled my own appointments to be at home. After 11:00 I got a call saying that they would have to cancel my appointment because they were too busy with other calls. I mentioned the inconvenience of having to take off work, but just got a brief sorry in response. When asked if I would like to reschedule I suggested that maybe they could not charge me the $100 service fee to give me an estimate on the work I wanted to have done. The service manager said that would not be possible. I'll look at other plumbers in the future.
I used them to repair my A/C. they got the repair done alright but I had an issue with a small portion of the billing. They were not good to deal with in that regard. I will not use them again . . there are better choices out there than Genz-Ryan.
I made an appointment with Genz-Ryan on a Thursday for the following Tuesday. Took time off work to meet the plumber. Got a call in the morning saying they couldn't make it that day. Soonest they could get there would be 2 weeks from then. I had a house inspection due so needed the work done sooner than that. I asked why they couldn't do it sooner and the guy said they had a lot of broken and leaky pipe repairs to do. Called Benjamin Franklin and they came out that day.
I had a whole house air conditioning system installed by them. The guys who did the installation were excellent. My big problem is with their flat rate pricing. I might also add that HVAC contractors are neither licensed nor regulated by the State of Minnesota.
Their flat rate pricing provides no insight into what they charge for things. They refused to provide me a detailed invoice which I requested several time. What they did provide was a ""as installed"" parts list.
In doing research on that, many of the components are from Johnstone who does not sell to homeowners.
My suggestion is to use a contractor that does supply a detailed priced invoice.
I have no idea if the price I paid is competitive.
On March 6, 2018 your tech arrived at my house to re-attach a drain, waste disposal, and install a new faucet. I made an appointment to do that work specifically and was refused a quote over the phone. I didn't think anything of that at the time, though I should have. After arriving Matt requested some time to inspect the situation and put together a quote. After about 15 minutes I was given a quote of $1160 to perform just that work! Not only was that insulting it was ridiculous for the work requested in addition to this NOT being an emergency call (I waited a few days after making appointment). There was NO way this work was worth that. I refused that price to which Matt refused to do what I had asked. I have since found out that this work should have cost no more than $300 if performed by a master plumber...of which I never saw any of Matt's credentials.
After negotiating for a few minutes he offered his only other ""band-aid"" option which was that I install the faucet myself and he do the rest of the work for $560 with NO WARRANTY. It is pretty obvious these prices are based on the ability of the owner to pay (i.e. nice neighborhood means you can charge more right?) as he would not show me the equation used to justify the cost. Since when do plumbers get $1000 per hour? That is a joke and a crime, not to mention unethical. He also was sure to mention that if I did not accept I would still be charged the $150 for the call (which was never mentioned when I made the appointment). He also mentioned that it was Friday and if I didn't accept I would get nothing and probably be stuck without plumbing because it was Friday (which was true). I was mad but under duress and the threat reluctantly signed the revised quote because I needed the sink attached. This is extortion plain and simple!
Matt was a reasonably nice guy, however after starting the work he said he didn't have all the parts and would have to order them. BUT I ALREADY HAD NEW PARTS FOR HIM TO USE! We waited for the parts to arrive, which wasn't a huge deal as I had another contractor stop by but it was totally unnecessary because I already had the parts he needed. When he finally did the work it took him all of 45 minutes to complete and he wasn't really able to check the drain for leaks because remember he refused to install the faucet. He poured a bucket of water down to check, but what a bunch of BS that was because later that night after I INSTALLED THE FAUCET MYSELF and ran the water for a few minutes Matt's work leaked! So after all of that, the work he completed was faulty. At this point (about 10PM on a Friday evening) knowing I had no warranty, I inspected his work and found that he used an overabundance of thread compound on plastic pipe compression fittings which is not necessary...so I took it apart myself and re-did it correctly. The only reason I called you was for convenience and the worry my drain needed to be lowered (which it didn't), but in the end I got nothing and had to do the work myself anyway...after being bamboozled for $560. I got absolutely nothing out of it, except for the sour taste of Genz Ryan.
I called the following week to talk to somebody but when I got transferred I was disconnected. Prior to that call I disputed a part of the charge with my credit card company to a value I thought was in line with what I got. I was willing to pay for Matt's time even though he did a lousy job, but in the end you sent a BS invoice to my cc company and they could not honor my dispute because the amount I disputed was different than what was on the invoice.
After speaking with other reputable tradesmen I learned that you along with Benjamin Franklin, Bonfe, and others all operate in this same despicable manner so should be avoided at all costs.
If anyone is contemplating purchasing a system from Genz-Ryan, please read my review so you can have a better understanding about the level of service provided by this company. Here is my Genz-Ryan Story.
In July 2014 we dropped $10k to purchase a new 'state-of-the-art' Lennox furnace and AC system as a replacement for the system in our existing house.
Two years later (I think), the AC system broke down during the middle of summer, and required a full recharge.
Two winters ago (I think), the furnace wasnt heating properly during the middle of the winter. I made a service call, and they said there was no problem. So I asked him to put his hand by the heat register to feel the airflow while the furnace was 'running', and he told me that was normal. I asked if it typically takes more than one hour during -5 degree weather to raise the temperature in the house by one degree, and he said YES! He told me that the system was designed for 'comfort', which is why the airflow settings are so low.
I had the same problem twice with the AC during two separate summers, and when they came out, they said that the airflow is so low because the system is designed for 'comfort'. During summer, it continues to be 10-12 degrees warmer upstairs vs downstairs.
This past winter, I noticed that the house wasnt humidifying. It took two separate service calls to fix that problem. By the time it was fixed, I asked what was wrong. They said they werent sure. They said that the system somehow forgot that it had a humidifier, so they had to re-register the humidifier settings within the thermostat.
Then yesterday (during early summer), I walk down into the basement to find the floor covered in water! It didnt take long for me to realize that the water pump attached to the system wasnt working (the pump that removes all of the water from the AC/dehumidifier system).
This happened three months after I had just had my basement perimeter torn up for two weeks to waterproof the entire area. I guess I clearly didnt contemplate the potential of a flooded basement from a water leak in my new Genz-Ryan 'state-of-the-art' furnace/AC system. I should have known better.
I called the customer service line, and immediately asked to speak to a supervisor. The person on the phone wanted to find out what the problem was first before he transferred me, and so I told him. He then told me that he was a supervisor (his name was Kareem I think). I told him what the problem was, and I again asked if I could just return the system, get my money back, and agree to just move on and remove me from my misery. Of course he denied that request. He asked if he could send someone over to the house right away, and I told him I couldnt get away from work, and so I asked him if someone could come around 5 yesterday afternoon. He said he would call me back. He then told me the GFCI outlet that the pump was plugged into was probably tripped, but he said he would still call back tat day to follow-up on that problem, and look into whether they would repair the water damage to my house. When I got home, sure enough, the outlet was the problem, but the outlet wont reset itself, because something is clearly wrong in the electrical circuitry. I never did receive that call-back that he promised me, so I called at 5:30 yesterday afternoon to speak with someone, and after holding for a while, it put me into a voicemail, where I sternly asked for a call-back.
At the time I am writing this review, I have still not received a call-back.
I will be spending the weekend trying to remove all of the water from the basement, and assess the damage to the floor and walls.
Now, I understand that equipment can break down. Those things happen, and sometimes that is not anybody's fault. But it is really hard to forgive the lack of follow-up and poor customer service. Those things are entirely preventable.
At this point, I think I just have to cut my losses, and just find another company that can provide me with different equipment, and move on. How sad though...what a waste of $10,000.00.
Yes, another bad review for these guys. And yes, I wish I could give them a 0 stars rating. It's not often I get ripped off, but they got me with an Air Conditioner repair. With 90+ degrees outside after almost a week without air, I bought their pitch about all the things that are wrong with my AC and paid them almost $1,700! All I needed is a seal & recharge service, which usually runs around $400. They told me I needed a new ""Voltage Absorption"" system and some other stuff and it sounded important. IT DOES NOT EXIST. See an ABC affiliate news report about the same ripoff: http://abc11.com/home/ac-repair-leaves-apex-homeowner-with-questions/2289963/
Don't bother with these guys.. there is a good chance you will get screwed.
If I could give this company zero stars, I would. I have never been so displeased! We moved into our brand new home less than one month ago and have already had 3 warranty calls - ALL of which are related to Genz Ryan - a dryer vent that didn't meet city code, a copper pipe sticking out beyond a stud so we couldn't hang drywall, and a leaking shower drain. This has required someone to be home from work on a weekday (no weekend appt slots) 3-4 times and they best they can do is provide you with a 5 hour window that they will be available. Even cable companies are better than that.
Not to mention we've had multiple run ins with rude salesman and receptionists. Lastly, they are beyond overpriced. We asked for a quote for a basic water softener and they couldn't provide one less than $2000! Shop around and do your research!
After speaking with a representative further this afternoon and stating that I am not sure how this company stays in business her response over the phone was ""yeah it's quite interesting."" Makes me have a lot of confidence in this business... not.
Strange how as I am reading the reviews before mine how identical my issues are with this company. No itemized bill. No call back. Expensive company charging over $500 to fix a broken faucet. We were desperate to get water running again and to be taken advantage when we are vulnerable. Please do your homework and read reviews before calling.
