EXPENSIVE!! Call first before they waste your time.
I needed to replace an electric water heater in one of our rentals. I called Genz-Ryan since they were located close to the property. I have replaced electric water heaters in other rental units as recent as 6 months so I had good idea of what it should cost. Their cost was DOUBLE!! Normal cost should be around $900-$1000. They wanted $1875. I should have paid the service call fee and sent the tech on his way and called someone else, but my tenants needed hot water and it was a Friday. I also should have inquired how much they charge, which I did not. My suggestion would be to NOT use this company. Call someone else, anyone else.

Called this company on 11/22/2017, early afternoon to have a plumber out. Their website said free service call if you have the work done. The person who took the call said $190.00, or maybe it was $200.00 just to show up. When I asked about the website ad saying the service call is free if you have the work done she said no. What? Which is true, what your website says, or what the person answering your phones during business hours on a weekday says? Not even remotely impressed, don't advertise something and then rescind the offer...geesh

Genz-Ryan Is the worst!!!!!

I received a postcard in the mail with a $59 hot water flush and fill with inspection deal from Genz Ryan. Since my water heater was 12 years old, I decided to have Genz Ryan come out to look it over, knowing that I was sure they would find something wrong and try to sell me some service or another water heater. Sure enough, the technician found a leak, and recommended replacement. He showed me the leak, which I wouldn't argue with.
After finishing up, he showed me on his tablet 4 different options for replacement. The price ranged from $4,00 to $10,000. I actually laughed at his proposal, and said all I needed was a new water heater, replacing my 75 gallon power-vent with a 50 gallon power-vent. The lowest price was $4,000, and I was told that the price was very competitive with other plumbing contractors. I was in a hurry, and knowing that he was not being truthful, I asked if he could email me a copy of the estimates. He said he would. After waiting for 2 weeks, it was never sent. I called Genz Ryan and got the run around for over a week. I left a message, and no one got back to me. I called again, and was told it would be sent. It wasn't. I called again and was told the technician would call me back. He did, and said he would send the estimate, I never received it. I waited another couple days and called back. I was told someone would look into it. Later that night, I finally got a call from a supervisor, who seemed very reluctant to give me pricing over the phone or to send me the estimate. At the end of our conversation, he said the price would be $2,734. He was very short with me, and I told him that was all I was looking for, why was I being told I needed at least a $4,000 replacement, and told him I was unhappy with their company.
I called a local plumbing contractor in Lakeville(Drain Pro), and easily got a quote over the phone for a similar water heater. The price was $1,673 including the cost of the permit, and was told that a rebate of $125 was in place for this unit. They could schedule it within days, which I did.
Buyers beware. Genz Ryan will always try to upsell additional service or equipment you don't need, and inflate the price dramatically. I saved over $1,000 on a water heater. Lord knows what they charge for more expensive HVAC equipment. They are unethical and have horrible customer service. I will never use them again. They took advantage of me years back on plumbing service. Never again. I feel sorry for the people they prey on that might not check around on pricing and that pays what they charge. I am reluctant to even give them 1 star, but that is the lowest score you can give them.

Genz-Ryan was a referral from a trusted source. I'm not sure who really owns and runs this company; but if it were me, I'd sure want to know the disastrous communication going on at the base office, paired with several (not all.... Jeff and Billy did fine) incompetent service people. I started my G-R journey with a small AC water condensation pump problem that was repaired improperly (broke the very next day), Jeff, the next technician, informed me his colleague had not even completed the job to""code"". The phone call telephone tag began. Two technicians were then sent out, and I was ""up-sold"" (my problem, my own ignorance) a Whole Home Humidification IAQ Comfort Control System w/WiFi and UV Protection $4938.00. I also was encouraged to join their ""club""at $20.00 a month. Riddled with long return visits( I waited 4 hours on install day because they sent the wrong person( Friday 2/10/2017) and the guy (Joe, a decent guy) was here over 5 hours, I had to cancel my Friday eve plans, and still they had to send another tech back Sat morn to complete the job. I ended up paying $5300.00 (including the $335.00 first visit) in two installments. The first one I authorized for $2496.00. The next payment I told them I would like to discuss, due to about $400.00 of discrepancies. I never got return calls for almost 3 months; then Genz-Ryan just went ahead and ran my credit card they on file. I discovered it on my visa bill. I canceled the ""club""; but continued to be charged. I started a G-R file with the dates and times I called, and who I talked to. It's not a small file. The most upsetting piece of this whole mess is the man in the leadership role, Jeff Daylor(Dehler), the person who could have helped me and made things ""right"", but, was completely unavailable, always out of the office, too busy, and never returned a phone call. My last message was to Jeff Daylor(Dehler?) to inform him that I would be writing a review in Yelp. I had to involve my bank to stop payment at one point. I have asked Jeff Daylor(or Dehler) to be compensated for $522.00 for the first out of code visit, a pump/tubing I purchased, and billing me for the ""club"" after I canceled. Time is something I will never get back; I consider it a life lesson plan I purchased. My Humidification system works just fine; although I'm looking for a good reliable company to stick with for tune ups etc... I would be embarrassed and angry to own or be in charge of this outfit.

We had a boiler problem so we called Genz-Ryan. Noah came to do the repair. He diagnosed the issue correctly and took the proper steps to fix it. Noah worked as long as it took to fix the problem even on a Friday night. He was professional as well as courteous. I would definitely recommend Noah to anyone with furnace or boiler problems.

This was the first time we used Genz Ryan. A technician named Bill came out to give us an estimate for a slow leak in a kitchen drain. Bill asked us a few times if we had any idea how expensive the repair was going to be, each time mentioning a higher price as if trying to find out how much we were willing to pay (stacking the deck with unnecessary add-ons). Their phony estimate which he said he would e-mail and I never received, was over ten times higher than three other estimates from reputable companies ($4,000 plus). When we asked if we could think it over a couple of days and would like an itemization of the charges, his attitude changed in a heartbeat, and he accused us of being dishonest and left in a hurry. I wound up paying a little over $200 for his time and trip and the coupon I had for 1 free service trip he refused to use. The repair was successfully completed by one of the above companies for about $270 including trip charge. Genz Ryan practices disgraceful fraud. Don't even consider letting these people in your home.

I just got off the phone with the Genz Ryan customer service rep. It was a horrible experience. The woman was confusing and I could not even make an appointment to sigh up for their service plan (which I had all intentions of doing). If this is the face of their business, I will take my business elsewhere.

** Beware of Genz-Ryan **

Genz-Ryan came to certify a furnace for a City of Richfield point of sale inspection. Dan and his partner took less than an hour to claim the following work needed to be performed to certify the furnace.

Blower motor amperage was low

When asked where the amperage guidelines were found they said the internet; however they could produce no make or model number for the blower motor so we could verify.

Exhaust piping must be replaced by double wall piping to be up to code

No such code exists for currently installed furnaces

Laundry tub must be removed for proximity to furnace per code

No such code exists for currently installed furnaces

The quote for all this work was $1800 sort of. When asked for a specific quote they couldn't provide one right then; unless were going to do the work. We were told the quote would be emailed the next morning. When we called three days later having not received either an invoice or a quote we talked to a manager Jeff. He had limited information about our appointment. The information he had didn't show that we had been given an $1800 ""quote"". When we continued to ask tough questions about the specifics of his technicians report to us he finally hung up. It took 3 weeks for an invoice for the very unethical visit, which my 74 year old mother in law on SSI paid $189 for, to be delivered by email. No quote was provided, just a $189 furnace inspection visit that said the furnace had failed.

We had another HVAC contractor out later that week to certify the furnace and confirmed there were no code violations and the amperage testing they did was bogus. That visit was $159.

Genz-Ryan sucks.

We called a week ago to have them come to our home to install water line before our new fridge arrived. Bill Blanche did the work.

They charge $99 just to come out, no free estimates. Bill Blanche spent 4 hours at our home trying to upsell every ""problem"" he could find. Original quote was $5,000 for work plus other home improvements. He spoke about guitars (mutual interest w/ my husband). Husband did not assent to $5k and was not sure about price for ""only"" the water line, which Bill quoted at $1000. Husband said he didn't want to pay him $99 for nothing, but the quote seemed really high... Bill then told him if he did not take his quote, then he just got ""paid $99 to talk about guitars.""
Really?

Bill Blanche said he'd help us out on the $1k quote. He would get our price down $70 by reducing the two year warranty down to 30 days. Great.

When my husband asked why the quote was so high, Bill said ""the company has to pay for their trucks, and healthcare costs for employees."" Not that this was a difficult or complex job. They needed to pay for their high overhead. Nice.

They do not quote by the hour or materials, just by job. I asked manager Jeff Dehler for an itemized bill, and was told it was a ""complex formula"" they had in their computers that calculated price.

I asked for that formula, and he said he would not give it to me.

I asked for three quotes to other customers on three comparable jobs, he would not give it to me.

We priced materials. Copper pipe, $6. Hammer arrester $12, water shutoff valve $4. Flexible water line from pipe to fridge, $8. Copper T-bracket and elbows, solder, let's call it $10. So... roughly $40 in materials...

Mileage? I would assume that was part of the $99 fee to look and give bid.

With the $99 for estimate/mileage charge and the $40 in materials, all that's left is the charge for being a plumber and time spent on job...

$693.

That being said, he did a good job. I respect those that work and that people should be paid for that work. I know companies have costs of their own - nothing is for free.

THAT being said, we were robbed. There is a difference between being charged for work at a fair comparable rate, and getting GOUGED because of ignorance. I don't believe this was fair. And the fact the manager just brushed me off and did not even attempt to work with me or reinstate the 2 year warranty equals a BAD experience.

Caveat emptor, my friends. Buyer beware.

We were uninformed and we needed the work done, but people should not be taken advantage of like this...

Please think twice before working with them. At least arm yourself with this info and protect yourselves...

The Genz-Ryan jingle has been adjusted a bit... ""I HATE those guys!""
