Duffy Construction built my mother in law apartment. Although it took longer than expected due to Covid and everything being on back order, I am very happy with how my apartment turned out. Duffy construction is very fair and I would recommend them to others.

We hired Duffy Construction of Tacoma (WA License DUFFYCL843LS) to put in a kitchenette in our basement and turn a basement laundry room into a second bathroom and laundry room. They had good reviews, and when Brendon Duffy came out to see what we wanted done, he seemed knowledgeable. Brendon talked to us about what we wanted to have done. He came back a week later with a contract for us to sign. Brendon said he expected to have the work done within 8 to 9 weeks.
Work started with some minor demolition, but then stalled while Duffy Construction attempted to get the building permit. They hadn't realized they had to submit a drawing with measurements showing the work they were intending to do. Brendon explained to us that he had not applied for building permits in Tacoma before, and that the process was more difficult than he expected. We began to wonder how much experience Duffy Construction actually had.
The permit was issued, and the work resumed. It quickly became evident that Duffy Construction was not performing quality work. The first wall they built was crooked, and had to be torn down and rebuilt. The closet walls they built were also crooked. They didn't understand the mechanical code, and had to reinstall the dryer vent several times before it could pass inspection. They had trouble installing cabinets correctly, did a substandard job of installing sheetrock and wall texture, and did a poor job of painting the walls. They installed a shower door backwards (the sticker that said ""this side out"" was put with that side in).
As the homeowners, we did not remain silent. We asked questions about things that didn't look right to us. If we had been provided with satisfactory answers, we would have been happy. Instead, we were simply told not to worry, or that we didn't want to be involved in the ""sausage making."" As time went on, we became more vocal. It is our house, and we wanted at least average quality. The need to continually correct obvious mistakes kept delaying our project. Duffy Construction did not like to have errors pointed out to them, especially if it was a woman pointing out their errors.
Four months after they began work on this nine-week project, we asked Duffy Construction to stop work when their second attempt to install snap laminate flooring failed. This flooring was being installed by their ""best"" flooring guy, who supposedly had decades of experience. We ended up correcting and finishing the work, except for the remaining plumbing and electrical work, ourselves with a lot less stress and aggravation.

I hired Duffy Construction (Pat and Brendan Duffy) to upgrade our basement area to include a 3/4 bath, kitchenette, and egress window. This contracting company is a disaster in more ways that can be explained in this review, and I cannot recommend hiring them. They are not a true construction company in the standard sense. Their experience comes from flipping houses, not building houses.

The crew's workmanship is beyond terrible. Not one member of the crew (Mark, Ray, or Jimmy) can measure correctly, build anything square, or follow required code. They had to remove and redo almost every aspect of the job which they personally had attempted to do. While I'll include a few pictures (proof is in the pictures) here are a few examples: They attempted to put a flex style (not code) dryer vent in the wall cavity. They installed kitchen cabinets leaving no room for the appliances. They installed broken cabinets. They tried to install water saturated plywood for the kitchen countertop base. ALL of the interior framing and drywall is so out of plumb. I can't even hang a wall mirror. The LVP flooring for the bathroom had to be removed and reinstalled. They installed the shower door inside out.

They also caused damaged to my house by rinsing and dumping sheetrock compound directly against my exterior house siding and foundation. When asked to NOT rinse against the house, they poured their construction debris all over my newly poured and green walkway cement (installed by a different contractor). They brought my garden hose inside the house to fill their rinse buckets saturating my existing LVP flooring.

New employees won't help this company as the problem begins and ends with Pat and Brendan Duffy. I found it difficult to discuss any problems with either of them. Brendan has no clue how to manage a project. He attempted to install the kitchen cabinets prior to electrical and sheetrock installation behind the cabinets (I kid you not). Pat doesn't want to listen to the homeowner and became more moody and arrogant as I questioned the mistakes his crew made. In the end, we terminated the contract early. They'd only finished 2/3rds of the project, and some of that had to be redone. Save yourself the trouble. I wished a review like this had been up before I hired them.
