I called to schedule a water heater replacement. My electric water heater had failed and I purchased a new one that required some new fittings and copper to be installed so I called D&R to get the job done. I have used them in the past and had great dealings with the company! I called on a Monday and relayed I was in no rush so they offered Friday afternoon install timeframe. I was quoted $350-$500 for an electric water heater install. I informed the owner that my current water heater had an additional piece screwed into the drain that needed to be addressed. I was asked to provide some pictures in advance so they could assess the situation. I quickly took pics and texted them.
Friday afternoon comes and goes and they are a no call/no show. I text the owner at 2pm which is read but with no reply. I finally call at 4:30p to find out they were still out working on another job. During this call I am asked about a special part that might be needed based on my pictures from 5 DAYS AGO. Why I am being asked about this part 4 hours past the scheduled arrival time was beyond belief. I could have sourced the part myself and had it ready for them had they replied to my text or called me earlier in the week. I tell them the part can be reused so no worry there and they dispatch a plumber.
Two nice gentleman arrive at 5pm and assess the job. I walk them through the job I am requesting and one guy looks at me and says ""I think about 8"". I take this to mean that they will be done about 8pm and tell them to get started even though I think this isn't a 3 hour job but I had been quoted an estimated max of $500 so I didn't care how long it took.
They quickly and expertly get the job done in 1 hour doing a fantastic job which is impressive.
The bill is presented and they ask for $950!!!! Almost 3 times the minimum I was quoted. When I push back I am told ""Well, I told you it would be about 8 when I saw everything"". Why would I expect a massive renegotiation of price after the initial quote was provided and pictures of the job had been provided? Everyone went on about added fees that I was NEVER told about. The said they would be ""kind"" and knock it down to $850.
So to review:
-I tell them it is more complex than a standard install and they ask for pictures with no reply asking about the special part or telling me it is going to be more than quoted.
-No Call/No Show on the day scheduled 5 days in advance.
-Presenting me a bill almost triple what was quoted and feeding me excuses left and right that were never disclosed up front.
Had they told me up front that it might cost $1000 for their help I likely would approved it and moved forward because their past work was fantastic. However quoting me $350-500 then asking for $950 is a pure grift.
They had pictures in advance and I told them it was a slightly larger job than a standard water heater replacement and they never adjusted their initial quote.
I will not be calling them again which is a shame because the work they do is really good.
I was absolutely disgusted when they charged my senior citizen father in law $1885 for 2hrs and 2mins of clearing the pipe to the street. They called back at 10pm basically admitted to scamming my father, then said they broke a cable, then said labor is $200 an hour!! He acted like he was doing me a favor by cutting the bill in half..I was so disgusted that they took advantage of an older man! He finally got the bill down to $400 which is well over industry standards! Deplorable, disgusting, elderly abuse, robbery
Chris L.Super quick and gave a lower estimate on repairs than competing business. Very friendly and explained everything in great detail. (Probably greater detail than I needed as I only understand a few things of it lol). Highly recommend everyone utilizing D&R.
The gentleman went above and beyond to make sure we could get our water heater installed as soon as it was possible! They were kind, courteous and even funny! I had an issue with my bank card and they patiently waited for me to go to the atm to withdraw the amount. Definitely recommend them to anyone needing plumbers!
Alan B.They responded very quickly and solved our plumbing issue in a flash! Would use them again anytime.
They have some of the highest prices with the lowest type of qualified service in Bloomington. Not to mention that the owner is very rude and has been known to threaten customers. I strongly recommend to any company other than this one
They knew I was in a bind and took full advantage of me. Charged $700+ for a job that would have been $200-$300 as quoted by other local plumbers after the fact. The guy that came over, I think he was the owner, is a con artist and I would never recommend anyone to use this place. Call one of the other local places in Blono if you value your money!!
Update after owners comment: I'm not sure where you tried to reach out to my via direct message but I have received no contact from you. This was a few years ago but after seeing someone else taken advantage of I wanted to get the word out so someone else doesn't get taken advantage of. I'm all for defending your business against bogus claims (which this review is 150% factual) but the unprofessional manner in which you've responded to a couple reviews speaks volumes about your business.
We had a part on our water heater go out and it was only three years old. The manufacturer of the water heater insisted that my husband be the one to call and order the parts. The owner was in Las Vegas on vacation and did his best to try to help us diagnose this over the phone so that we could order parts more quickly and not have to wait for a service call. The first part did not work but the second one did. The owner was on vacation in Las Vegas and he constantly texted us to get status and to have his son work on it as soon as possible. They came to install the part on New Year's eve because they promised they would if they came and they did do that. They were very kind, followed up, and got the job done. We overnighted the parts to us and they were constantly making sure to come as soon as they arrived. I really cannot complain at all about how the plumbing company handled this or the service they gave us even though we did not have hot water for several days. I just don't think we will get the same brand of water heater next time.
Gratefully, I am happy to report my awesome experience with D & R Plumbing. My water heater went out last week and was leaking water. After contacting Jake Of All Trades and paying them to stop the leak unsuccessfully, I contacted Richard. He was very polite, understanding and offered to stop by to complete the work at 11 p.m. that night. Due to an error I made with AHS he was unable to come. Once I corrected the error he came first thing the next day. Thankfully, he stopped the leak on Saturday. He contacted me repeatedly giving me updates on the replacement water heater. Once it arrived he promptly installed it next day. Water Heater works great so far and will definitely use him again. Thanks D &R Plumbing!
Fubo R.This family business CHEAT! Be aware before you working with this business. I had very bad experience with Richard and his dad. They will lure/pressure you to pay with cash and walk away without doing anything. Don't EVER pay cash to them!
I filed a claim through my home warranty about my leaking faucet. When he got the job and first call me, he said somehow the paperwork sent by my insurance company was not clear, he didn't know what problem I have. I told them that it's the faucet on the wall outside. He sounded excited and helpful by telling me that they will fix it that day, and would help on checking the other faucet and my ceiling fan. Then he started his trick. He pressured me by saying only accept cash, no credit card, no checks accepted. Later, he call me 6 times and left messages to tell me to prepare cash for them. I was very surprised with the cash-only business because it didn't sound right. At the time he and his dad arrived, the first thing they asked about is money in cash. He kept on asking his dad if I paid his dad with cash before he started to check on my leaking. More disgusting is that, after I paid them 100$ cash, they give me a piece of paper as receipt. On the paper, it shows clearly that they can accept credit cards and checked. But they lied numerous times to me saying that they only accept cash. They checked my leaking faucet for less then 5 minutes and started to make a long time call by walking a long distance away from me. It feels that he didn't want me to hear anything about what he or the other side was saying. After that weird call, he told me that he had another appointment to go and will finish the other job and come back to replace my leaking faucets. He even told me that he will replace the other not-so-leaking faucet as well and will check my ceiling fan. How fool am I that I believed his words! So he and his dad left with my 100$ cash without doing anything. Of cause they didn't come back to fix my faucets. They called and told me it is not covered by my insurance.
The trick he cheated me is like this. He knew from the beginning that my faucet won't be covered by my insurance with the paper work sent by my insurance. He pretended he didn't know. He already had another job/appointment at somewhere close to my area. So they need to come to my area anyway. But he and his dad can get another 100$ more cash from me, if they make a stop to my location first. That was why he kept telling me that they will come to my place first and asked me to prepare cash. It sounded that he was treating me with his higher priority , isn't it? At my site, he called my insurance and verified that it's not covered. That is why he walked a long distance away from me when he was on the phone with my insurance. It is because he didn't want me to know that it is not covered before they leave. After his call, he immediately told me that they had to go for another appointment and lied to me that they will come back after that job.
I would never recommend this business based what I experienced.
