Dick Ray Master Plumber Heating and Cooling
Company Overview
Our family has been rooted in the Kansas City region since 1854. We focus on air conditioning repairs, heating and cooling solutions, furnace services, plumbing, and sump pump repairs. We have the know-how to resolve any drainage concern. Our drain cleaning services tackle clogged showers, toilets, mineral backups, and other drainage challenges. Dick Ray also offers septic tank replacements, grease trap interceptor services, bathroom renovations, and a variety of plumbing, heating, and cooling solutions. Our licenses allow us to work in multiple cities throughout the Kansas City Metro area, including Master Plumber, Master Mechanic, and Refrigeration Supervisor. Acquiring these licenses involves passing a stringent examination. We take pride in our work and ensure it is done correctly the first time. We avoid shortcuts in our work. Should we err, we will come back at any time, provided you own the building, to fix it at our expense. At Dick Ray Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, there is no one-year limit for recognizing subpar workmanship! A significant number of our team members have completed college education.
In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.
He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.
The family that arrived in Kansas City from England and helped lay the first sewer six generations ago is still thriving. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.
After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.
In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.
Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.

Recommended Customer Reviews
I have had some water pressure issues ongoing, nonetheless they have fixed it and we're patient and persistent in getting the issues fixed. Dan and Vince were great technicians! Highly recommend this company. They have been honest and transparent and they communicate the options. I will definitely be using this company for future repairs!
i called dick ray and explained to them i had a stack drain in the basement with a slow drain problem. they told me that would be $79.00. i set the apt. the plumber came out and said it would be $179.00. i balked at his quote and he said he could do it for $159.00. i told him i explained that i described the problem exactly to his office and they told me it would be $79.00. he said he couldnt clear the drain for that amount. i told him goodbye. dont use these pirates.
Horrible, if I could give zero stars I would. I called after hours with an emergency & spoke to someone who dispatched a technician but no one ever showed or called me back. So much for EMERGENCY 24 hour service...
Secular P.Dick Ray did work for us 11/14/19. The check was cashed today, 7/1/20. Ridiculous!
Lola H.Was hoping to use this company as they seem to get great reviews. I was referred via my home owner's warranty program when our AC went out on a 93 degree day. Originally, Dick Ray said they could see me that day (a Saturday), gave me my two hour window and we were all set! Then I got a notification from my home warranty program that Dick Ray had subsequently rejected the job. I called back to see what was up and they told me never mind they don't have that window and can see me after hours but I'd have to I pay an emergency rate. When I pushed back indicating this was not my mistake, they put me on hold only to come back and tell me never mind, they can only schedule homeowner warranty jobs Monday through Friday, and by the way they can't actually have someone cone out for two weeks, because they only have one technician who works with the home warranty program jobs. I don't like to be obnoxious about reviews, they seemed nice enough. Just a warning that if you are planning on going through your homeowner's warranty, Dick Ray may not be very helpful. They were extremely unhelpful in my case- ate up an hour of my time with a lot of misinformation, and ultimately could not accommodate the job in anything that would be considered a timely manner.
Their truck hauling a trailer with loose rock on 635N at 6:00 pm , Wednesday May 6,2020, with rock bouncing off trailer and hitting other vehicles, the rocks hit my windshield several times, even when I was in the other lane. I called the company, left a message with the answering service, and still no call back from them.
Nikki G.Please run and do not use them. Their technician came out and fell through the ceiling in our kitchen. We explained to them we will pay the $65 fee when they come out and fix our ceiling and technician got upset. I called the office and no apology for the inconvenience, but they focused on the $65 at which time I told them I wanted to make sure someone came back before paying and all I got was a laugh and no apology. I explained our 81 year old mother had chemo and can not be ingesting anything coming from the attic, no empathy but more laughing about us not paying the $65. We are close to a month later and no update so I call again and finally talk to Jewel who is much more pleasant but states their drywall person is way behind with no ETA and I explain my mom having chemo again and I explain they need to hire someone else. Terrible service for an incident your technician is responsible for so please steer clear of this company. If I hear back soon I will update this post!
Our heater went out in 18 degree weather this weekend. I spoke with the office manager, who reassured me that we wouldn't have a house fire, and suggested we wait until Monday morning to make an appointment, because it would save us a couple hundred dollars - so already got a yahoo for both answering the phone at night on the weekend and for being upfront on what they could do. Dan came this morning, he was super professional, kind, and we have a warm toasty house now. He was upfront on what broke and what needed to happen, and explained the invoice easily for me. So thank you guys!
Patricia J.I was very impressed with Dick Ray Master Plumber Heating & Cooling. First, I spoke with Lisa who helped me set up my appointment. Since the referral/fix of my A/C was through a home warranty company, Lisa was great about getting me set up with their first available appointment which was the next day. After setting up the appointment, she even called me back to see if possibly she could help me fix the issue over the phone (unfortunately my issue was a part that needed to be replaced). The next day Cody came out and repaired my unit. He arrived on time, completed the work in a timely manner and patiently answered all my questions. I was very happy with both the customer service and actual service/repairs I received. I would highly recommend the company I will contact them in the future if I have any plumbing or HVAC issues.
Been using their service for years. Always prompt, courteous and efficient. Zak was the technician who diagnosed and repaired my furnace. He kept me informed and explained what was repaired. Lisa in the office was very helpful with scheduling and billing. If you are looking for HVAC or plumbing needs in the KC metro area, look no further!
