Company Overview

The Kansas City area has been our family's home since 1854. We focus on air conditioning repairs, heating and cooling solutions, furnace services, plumbing, and sump pump repairs. We have the know-how to resolve any drainage concern. We provide drain cleaning for clogged showers, toilets, mineral buildup, and foreign objects lodged in drains. In addition, Dick Ray provides septic tank replacements, grease trap interceptor services, bathroom remodels, and comprehensive plumbing, heating, and cooling services. We are licensed to serve in cities throughout the Kansas City Metro area, holding titles such as Master Plumber, Master Mechanic, and Refrigeration Supervisor. Acquiring these licenses involves passing a stringent examination. Our work is performed with pride, ensuring it is done right the first time. Cutting corners is not in our practice. Should we err, we will come back at any time, provided you own the building, to fix it at our expense. There is no one-year limit on identifying poor workmanship at Dick Ray Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling! Numerous employees in our team are college graduates.

In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. Even in those times, they provided round-the-clock service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.

Dishonest.. companies like this is who you want to stay away from.

Don't use them. Tech came and tried to charge me 965 dollars for minor toilet leak.

To buy the part which is a gasket and some screws it would cost me 965. If I were to replace the entire toilet it would cost me 1500.00!

The kohler genuine part cost is 7.00 on Amazon and Home Depot. So even if they had 100% markup on the it should have cost 14-15 dollars for the part. That means they wanted to charge 950+ dollars in labor.

Lowe's sells a brand new kohler toilet for 199.99 and will professionally install it for 250.00!

This company is dishonest. Don't use them.

Furnace tune-up was completed by Tim today. Very professional and knowledgeable. He explained what he was doing and why. That was great! How many service people will even talk to you. I will use him again. Jeff M

Highly recommend this company. They have been honest and transparent and they communicate the options. I will definitely be using this company for future repairs!

Horrible, if I could give zero stars I would. I called after hours with an emergency & spoke to someone who dispatched a technician but no one ever showed or called me back. So much for EMERGENCY 24 hour service...

Dick Ray did work for us 11/14/19. The check was cashed today, 7/1/20. Ridiculous!

Was hoping to use this company as they seem to get great reviews. I was referred via my home owner's warranty program when our AC went out on a 93 degree day. Originally, Dick Ray said they could see me that day (a Saturday), gave me my two hour window and we were all set! Then I got a notification from my home warranty program that Dick Ray had subsequently rejected the job. I called back to see what was up and they told me never mind they don't have that window and can see me after hours but I'd have to I pay an emergency rate. When I pushed back indicating this was not my mistake, they put me on hold only to come back and tell me never mind, they can only schedule homeowner warranty jobs Monday through Friday, and by the way they can't actually have someone cone out for two weeks, because they only have one technician who works with the home warranty program jobs. I don't like to be obnoxious about reviews, they seemed nice enough. Just a warning that if you are planning on going through your homeowner's warranty, Dick Ray may not be very helpful. They were extremely unhelpful in my case- ate up an hour of my time with a lot of misinformation, and ultimately could not accommodate the job in anything that would be considered a timely manner.

Their truck hauling a trailer with loose rock on 635N at 6:00 pm , Wednesday May 6,2020, with rock bouncing off trailer and hitting other vehicles, the rocks hit my windshield several times, even when I was in the other lane. I called the company, left a message with the answering service, and still no call back from them.

Please run and do not use them. Their technician came out and fell through the ceiling in our kitchen. We explained to them we will pay the $65 fee when they come out and fix our ceiling and technician got upset. I called the office and no apology for the inconvenience, but they focused on the $65 at which time I told them I wanted to make sure someone came back before paying and all I got was a laugh and no apology. I explained our 81 year old mother had chemo and can not be ingesting anything coming from the attic, no empathy but more laughing about us not paying the $65. We are close to a month later and no update so I call again and finally talk to Jewel who is much more pleasant but states their drywall person is way behind with no ETA and I explain my mom having chemo again and I explain they need to hire someone else. Terrible service for an incident your technician is responsible for so please steer clear of this company. If I hear back soon I will update this post!

Our heater went out in 18 degree weather this weekend. I spoke with the office manager, who reassured me that we wouldn't have a house fire, and suggested we wait until Monday morning to make an appointment, because it would save us a couple hundred dollars - so already got a yahoo for both answering the phone at night on the weekend and for being upfront on what they could do. Dan came this morning, he was super professional, kind, and we have a warm toasty house now. He was upfront on what broke and what needed to happen, and explained the invoice easily for me. So thank you guys!
