I needed one worker to help me with moving furniture from one house to another on a Saturday. I figured they would provide someone strong but without any other useful skills, and that it might be a challenge to communicate in English. I was very pleasantly surprised! The person they provided (Cornell is his name -- consider asking for him), greatly exceeded my expectations. He provided two furniture dollies of his own, is a native English speaker, and is basically a professional mover -- he knew exactly how to rotate sofas to get them through tight spots, how to pack a moving truck to maximize capacity and prevent damage, and how to properly roll up oriental rugs. He also worked hard for the entire time.

Just be ware we hire a women who the center said had experience in house cleaning. We hired her for 3 hours of work in which she did nothing. We expected there would be a follow up on her work and there was not. We will be contacting them. $60 spent for nothing

hired a worker two years ago and also last month. Both times had great experience. They are both very hard workers and done a good job. The last workers was doing some heavy duty yard demolition work for me. I am not sure i can even do an hour of what he did, out in the sun, breaking up and moving dirt, sawing concrete etc.. Glad to found this place, and the wonderful people who staff and work there. Will definitely hire them again for any demanding yard and landscaping jobs

I needed some help to move big pieces of furniture in and out of my apt on the same day. I was getting new carpet installed and it was on a weekday, so hard to have friends help. I reserved online for 2 workers in the AM and 2 workers in the PM. They came, moved my stuff in less than an hour and even made sure there were pads to cover the pieces that needed to be protected.
The guys were pleasant, professional, courteous and very nice. I was home alone and I never felt threatened or unsafe as a single woman. I am going to have the day worker center paint my spare room, and hang my TV!!!
I am so pleased to have great workers available and support my community at the same time!!
THANKS GUYS!!!!

I've used your gardeners several times and I've always had hard workers and positive results! Each worker labors 2 to 3 hours and fills up 3 to 4 large trash cans of yard waste! I plan to hire a house cleaner next and I expect the same kind of hard work and positive results (although I hope not 3 to 4 cans of waste!) I love that this center provides these workers with meals and English lessons and other assistance to help them get along in our culture. Although I need to provide transportation to and from my home in Sunnyvale to your center, your rates are very fair and offset the travel time and cost. I would love to hear more about what happens to your workers over time and maybe this is on your web page. Thank you!... Barbara

Since moving to the bay area four years ago, I have used laborers for yard work from the DWCMV eight or nine times and they have never disappointed.

Positives:

-Most of the guys who work there treat it as a second job. They don't just blow in to town for the short term. In fact, yesterday I had some guys come haul wood, and one of the workers (Favian) had been here before about a year ago. So, it just feels so much safer than having a few guys pile in to your car at Home Depot.

-Treated right, they work hard!!

Negatives:

-Arranging travel to and from the center can be a bit of a hassle. I usually send an Uber and since I am in Los Gatos that can add about $60 to the daily fee, and then I call them with a description of the car when the Uber arrives. But I don't pay wages while they are in the Uber.

-I wouldn't recommend the center for skilled labor. It is probably too difficult for them to match up your requests with their labor force. On any given day, they may not know who will show up.

Other notes:

-I usually pay them $20 an hour, and I buy them lunch and pay their wages during lunch. If it is super hot or they work exceptionally hard, I usually give each guy an extra 20 to 50 bucks at the end of a 7- or 8-hour day.

-The guys really prefer longer days. There isn't much interest in coming to you for just 2 hours. So I wait until I have a full day. Furthermore, I have found that when you request more than one worker that they work really well together and stay happy and motivated. Teamwork is the key!

-Lastly, if you treat them with respect, you will reap dividends. Let them take breaks, offer water, and let them know about access to the bathroom. I have had laborers who were government workers, professors, and tradesman back in their home countries. And don't be afraid to roll up your sleeves and work with them. These aren't just guys you can throw out in the hot sun to work back-breaking labor while you sip lemonade in the shade. :-)

There are not enough stars available on the Yelp review form to do justice to this extraordinary organization. I have employed Day Workers several times over the years and I have always been delighted with the experience of working with the people who were selected to help me. The workers were, without exception, careful and efficient; they went about the job cheerfully and were a pleasure to employ. Some people who, with with the Center do not speak English, others do. I have always specified if my job is complex enough to require the communication of non-obvious instructions. I have always been paired with someone who can understand English well enough to carry out necessary tasks competently. Please call o. The Day Workers if you need help. They will help you and you will be contributing to the success of a unique and valuable institution. One, I a, proud to have in my community.
