City Mechanical
Company Overview
At present, every technician on our team is union trained. Education is a key aspect of our growing company's vision. This focus benefits our team as well as our clientele. Delivering exceptional HVAC services means assisting our clients in navigating the complex needs of their systems. Our aim is to assist our clients in resolving issues as they come up. We also emphasize the importance of system maintenance for better efficiency and functionality. These principles form the foundation of our company and continue to guide us today.
The vision for City Mechanical came from Russell L. Will Jr., who was a plumbing apprentice in the 1980s. Ronald A. Tinkey, a journeyman and now our secretary/treasurer, was his instructor. Russ admired Ron's extensive knowledge and his caring approach to mentoring young professionals. Thus, he made a proposal: ""Let's create a modest service company."" And the rest is history! City Mechanical started operations on April 1, 1991. Since then, they have been serving the bay area with exceptional HVAC/R commercial services. In the last ten years, they have steadily expanded into three locations, including Hercules, San Francisco, and Petaluma.

I cannot say enough good things here;
- after 9 days of intermittent AC issues (always after hours),
- visits from 2 different companies HVAC techs,
- I was exhausted, frustrated, and anxious about how the next appointment was going to go...
Thankfully, Jonathan was called out from City Mechanical and I literally explained my issue once and he got right to work identifying the cause, removed, and thoroughly flushed a partially blocked tube, that was allowing the unit to run perfectly all day, but by late afternoon/ evening the slow draining caused the water to accumulate on the tray & hit the sensor- which is why I kept hearing it kick on & right back off most evenings, while our apartment sat at 80 ish degrees.
I wish Jonathan had been sent out first, instead of the other companies techs who unfortunately wasted a lot of time and money, and caused us a lot of unnecessary stress.
Highly recommend.

The heating in our condo unit stopped working. We contacted two companies to repair and neither could perform the work. City Mechanical came out promptly and fixed the problem. I would recommend them to any others in the condo complex that have a similar issue, or to anyone with a heating unit problem.

I called this company and was advised they worked on a stove that we have from Italy, called an Ilve. A service person by the name of Nick who was friendly arrived. He had no knowledge of the stove. I provided him manuals. He worked on it for hours and still had no knowledge. Then he told me that I needed to order a certain part which I ordered. The part paid directly by me came to my home. He came back out but that was not what I needed. I called the Ilve company and had him speak directly to them who referred me to another service person in New Jersey. I had to pay him $50 via mail to speak with my service man to help him. He directed the city mechanical person to the issue. I then ordered the part and he came out and it finally works. While I am grateful for that but the invoice they sent is charging me $1800. They scratched my wood floors. He pushed the stove back when I was not in the room, and my son was there to offer help. His accountant emailed me several times on December 8 telling me I needed to pay or they were sending me to collections. I had sent them many emails and photos of my damaged floor and tried speaking with them about coming to some resolution, my wood floors to repair are over $1500. I sent the quote to the company directly from the installer of my wood floor and have not received any response. I have tried calling Ron Tinley and emailing him the quote and have not received any response. I asked this company specifically if they repaired Ilve stoves. They now claim I did not but I even advised the service man, Nick I had called other companies and were told they did not service. If they had no experience with my stove than I would have kept calling other companies. I am extremely upset that they charge whatever they want and refer to the contract you sign when it gives no price or estimate. They charge whatever and expect you to pay without acknowledging their errors and the damage to my floor. I am expected to pay their serviceman for learning on the job. This company is extremely unprofessional when it comes to cost and damage to property!

This company just charged me over $2600 to change a thermal sensor on a boiler/tank (hydronic heater put in by the previous owner of this house) that cost a few dollars and took a few minutes to install. They just charge large commercial property prices regardless of the work. I suppose they should have told me that they do not work on residential property or that I would have to pay a technician $450/hr (it was Sunday afternoon) to DRIVE to San Francisco and BACK. I just had a backflow testing company come out for city-mandated testing, and he told me that City Mechanical is known to charge exorbitant prices and gave me a referral to another firm that does higher-end residential at more customary prices--Flow Masters. Perhaps I might not have been so shocked if I received invoice this from my apartment management people, but for a normal home system please go elsewhere. And from the other reviewers, this predatory invoicing is not an uncommon experience.

I contacted this company after having issues with my furnace running all the time. They are one of the only companies that works on the type of furnace I have in my apartment. When the technician came out, he said the programmable thermostat was bad and needed to be replaced, and then he re-wired the thermostat connection to the furnace. The technician spent about 30 minutes rewiring it but charged me for a total of 3 hours. I called to dispute the charges and the representative tried to justify the almost $800 charge. I drafted an email detailing the total time spent and what was done for which they finally agreed the technician entered the time incorrectly and adjusted my bill. The furnace still continued to run non-stop, so after ordering a new programmable thermostat and having a different company's technician come out, everything was fixed. Come to find out the technician from City Mechanical incorrectly rewired the thermostat which could have caused a fuse to blow and should have never been rewired in the first place. A licensed technician should know how to correctly connect colored furnace wires to the appropriate ports on a programmable thermostat.

City Mechanical is a great option for any business in the Bay Area looking for HVAC work done properly!

I am a director of Engineering. I have used City Mechanical at several properties over the past 15 years. Russ is great to deal with. I have consistently used this company because once I call them I no longer have to worry about the problem, they make the repairs on time and correctly every time. Are they the cheapest company out there? No, but do you really want the cheapest HVAC contractor in the book working on your home or business? I certainly do not. I have read some of the negative reviews and find them hard to believe based upon my years of experience with City Mechanical. I strongly recommend them to anyone I know in need of their type of services.

I have been working with City Mechanical for over 20 years and they have always done great professional work in a timely manner.. From water booster stations to boilers, back flow certifications, plumbing, leak repairs. You name it they do it. I have been a Chief Engineer with Local 39 for 28 yrs and I've seen some bad plumbing contractors and Russ and his team are top notch.

I've had a few experiences with City Mechanical, as my condo building's resident engineer recommended this company, as they've done work in our building. Our condos here use a commercial HVAC system in each unit, so requires some specialized repair. Over the last 12 years, they've been here for two 5-year services and one repair. One of the five-year services felt very cursory and it felt like a 15-minute quickie for several hundred dollars, but that was many years ago. More recently I've had to repair my HVAC due to some issue with the circuitry and they did a good job of diagnosing and repairing a weird issue without too much cost ($700-ish, which, for this issue, seemed okay), and the second give-year service was well done. The guy caught some issues that would have eventually resulted in a much larger bill later, and he came back a week later to replace some wiring and other stuff, and didn't really charge me much extra. The admin people and the technician were both professional, responsive, and communicated well.

This company a rip off they over charged had some work done paid thousands of dollars they charge for a boiler and put one in of a lesser value had an experience boiler repair man look at the charges and there work they didn't complete repairs they charged for and when we sent an email mail to get some answers they give us the runaround like oh they don't work here any more .
