Carter Hardware knows no bounds. Carter Hardware, Inc. is the top decorative hardware and plumbing showroom in the western United States, managed by a family deeply rooted in the industry for three generations.
In the early 1900s, Carter Brothers was established by two of the owner’s great uncles. In 1923, Acme Hardware opened as the first decorative plumbing and hardware showroom in the western United States, founded by his grandfather. His father led the establishment of Phylrich International in 1959, a significant manufacturer in the decorative hardware and plumbing sector.
The present generation became part of the business in 1978 at Acme Hardware. In 1984, another venture, Decorators Accessories, was created to import decorative hardware, soon acquiring a metal polishing and plating company that evolved into Decorative Metal Finishing. Carter Hardware opened its doors in 1991. Tony Carter is the third generation of a family committed to the decorative plumbing and hardware business for almost 100 years. Entering the industry in 1978, he acquired expertise in commercial and residential hardware and plumbing, along with electroplating. Over the years, he has learned every facet of the industry, from production to showroom sales. His unique combination of knowledge and dedication to customer satisfaction sets him apart in the industry.

This place is really phenomenal. Saved me money and a lot of time and they have great taste.
I was doing construction on an old house needing new door hardware.. with a LOT of doors. Every place I went to was asking me questions like I was the expert. Truth is I had no clue what I needed and was staring at door hardware with the same confused look I had during high school calculus.
David Swanson from CH came out to the house, thoughtfully counted every door and window (if you've done this, you know that interior vs exterior hardware is lot to account for just on its own), and once it arrived, organized and marked every single door knob, latch, hinge, for its appropriate location in the house.
If not for David, I would still be figuring out how to pronounce ""mortice"" lock, let alone how many i actually needed.
Awesome place.

We have just completed redoing our custom kitchen and Carter hardware is very un professional with a snooty attitude and poor customer service skills. I would never use them again go to Water Works or Snyder Diamond you will be treated better and they will say thank you for your business.

I am at the very beginning of the process in building a new house. My interior designer said I must begin at Carter Hardware. I read the reviews and was not excited. But, I went in today.
Wow. David helped me for a very, very long time. He was patient and explained so much.
For those who say the people who work there don't care, or customers were offended because they weren't asked if they needed help....maybe if you needed help you should have said hello and asked? I had questions and every one was answered in a professional, informed manner.
Also, the items they have in their showroom are spectacular. There was a bathtub unlike I've seen before. And once they caught on to what my taste was based on what I was pointing out, they recommended other items that they thought I'd like, and they were correct. I will go back to Carter Hardware and recommend that you do too if you are looking for truly beautiful items for your home.

I work for a GC and we decided to use Carter Hardware for a small project. At first we thought they weren't too bad because they were very nice in person and on the phone. But that all seemed to change as the project progressed. They are very slow, do not respond quickly to emails or phone calls, do not put priority in our orders, messed up our order and blamed us, and overall, they have been a nightmare to work with. I've had to email the same people multiple times about the same issue and still have not seen a thing.

They should call it ""Ignore you as long as possible and then talk down to you while you're selecting items to buy from them"" Hardware.
Seriously, how do you stay in business that long after you've completely run out of fucks to give?
Meh.

I came in here today to look for door hardware for a new construction on the exterior doors. I had seen some hardware lines online and wanted to find a place to purchase and see all my options. The door manufacturer specified exactly what kind of hardware we need , as he has been in this business for over 20 years . The lady who had short hair at Carter's approached me and was not friendly at all. She was short, rude, and quick to make a negative remark about anything I asked. When I specified what kind of hardware I needed she immediately started raising her voice claiming that no such hardware exists. Really? Passage Mortise does exist and she should know better. She then yelled "" we won't back you up if it's wrong , you go deal with your door manufacturer !"" First of all, no one placed an order yet. Secondly, I just inquired about pricing and I am gather info on my options . Lastly, perhaps exploring and finding out more info on what I am inquiring about would have been appropriate rather that smirk rude remarks to a customer. She told me she will get pricing and I can ""trot along my way"". I believe there are so many wonderful hardware places that will treat you so much better and will welcome your business with pleasure.

My wife and I tried to purchase cabinet knobs from Carter Hardware on several occasions. The first trip we were greeted immediately, yet we were just in the preliminary browsing mode. On our second trip we asked for assistance but the staff was too ""busy"" to give us any time. We were really surprised considering the fact that there were 3 staff people in the store and we were the only clients in the store. We tried one third trip to the store, and when nobody had the time to assist us (they were ""busy"", but again, we were the only clients in the store) then asked if they would make an appointment for us to come in and review options for purchase. We were told that we would have to wait several days, as they had too many orders to fill and they didn't want to leave their desks. We then left and found another place close by, where the sales people were more than anxious to assist us.

Carter Hardware found pieces for me that I couldn't find elsewhere. I like working with them and have used them for many hardware needs throughout our remodel project. They're great, friendly, and have awesome and beautiful products. I recommend them!

Carter Hardware was recommended by a friend. It's a small store with lots of good household products displayed. The first time I went in with my friend no one asked if we needed help, I thought it odd but I was in the looky-loo phase so no big deal. The next time I went in alone; I was ignored until eventually Debra Carter asked if I needed help. Not a warm fuzzy Ms. Carter. I told her my needs and she was a bit impatient and gruff but I thought she knew her stuff. We got a preliminary order but I decided to bring back up with me on the next visit. My friends, Ms Carter and me put an order together over two-three hours, she assuring me she was putting down what I wanted although no brand names were used only code numbers. She spoke so fast and confidently that I believed her (shame on me!). She was annoyed when I asked questions and I knew from the first visit that we were not a match because everything one of us said the other didn't understand. Still I tried to power through. Again my friends encouraged me to just get the order done. When I placed the final order it was with her brother Tony. They are oddly similar but his people skills are a little more honed. The final order was in the multiple thousands of dollars.
As the materials came in The Carters repackaged them so I wouldn't know who the manufacturer was. I found this strange as other shops do not do this. The reason I am posting this is because they do not back up their products. The items that were good were very good, but several of the items did not work for my needs despite The Carters asking me door widths, rail widths prior to ordering and my providing them precise measurements directly from my contractor. Flush door handles they ordered for pocket doors were not flush and the doors had to be redone to fit the handles. I had to do this because The Carters do not take back items even if they ordered them improperly, including if I was willing to pay a restocking fee (normal anywhere else) they would not take back a single item. I was lucky enough to find out one manufacturer and another vendor I buy from (Renaissance Molding and Design) called on my behalf. The manufacturer sent us what we needed for an additional $80 to make the product work. It was clear from the conversation that even the manufacturer was not a fan of The Carters. The bottom line is that this business is run by people who go rogue and don't care what you want or need. In addition, they do not back up their products or their customers. They cost me a lot more money than the invoice amount by having work done to accommodate the incorrect products they ordered from me.
Needless to say, I recommend running for the hills from this store. I don't know how they stay in business with their attitude toward customers. The truth is after dealing with them, I think they may be aliens from another planet (Third Rock from the Sun anyone?); they have an odd way of communicating with normal people and this business has to be their cover. I don't see how else they could stay in business because during my four visits I never saw a single person purchasing anything from them.
P.S. Yelpers, If you dig a little deeper on yelp you will see the only positive reviews for this business are written by vendors and Tony Carter himself saying his sister is great. Guess what Carters, this is a real review, it is honest and is the best way I can publicly display my displeasure with dealing with your company. Carters, the custom made towel warmer you told me to research myself because you were too busy--I did do the research and that $5000 item will be ordered from Renaissance who you trash talked to me, but they did not trash talk you when I asked for their help to fix a problem you created. That's how real business people do it here on earth.

Well, guess what... we have been recommended this place by our architects but we are normal working people who have to take care of their private business after work or on weekends. Coming to find out that they a) don't have any products / a showroom on their website and b) their opening hours are Mo-Fri 10 to 5. Ouch. They have not landed in the new world.
