Company Overview

Family-owned for three generations, Capital Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric delivers comprehensive HVAC, plumbing, and electrical solutions for both residential and commercial needs, along with a NADCA certified duct cleaning service.

In 1937, two German immigrant partners, William Schmidtke and Helmut Klein, established our company by purchasing Tobin Sheet Metal. We started as Capital Sheet Metal, located on State Street. As time passed, our expertise in sheet metal fabrication evolved into ductwork construction, transforming us into a complete heating and air conditioning contractor.

The year 1963 marked our incorporation and our status as an authorized dealer for General Electric (now Trane) heating and air conditioning systems.

We moved to our current site at 1218 Carpenter Rd SE in Lacey in 1973.

After the passing of William Schmidtke in 1980, Larry Schmidtke and his wife Dianne assumed control of the business.

Larry and Dianne retired in 2003, and in 2007, their three sons—William, Chuck, and Dean—became the new owners. 2007 also saw the registration of the trade name ""Capital Heating & Cooling.""

Having been raised in the heating and air conditioning industry, Dean has acquired knowledge in multiple facets, including residential and commercial sales, dealer and manufacturer support, marketing, and accounting.

I had a bad service experience with this company. After making the management team aware they thanked me for my feedback and promptly refunded my money. The owners of the family owned company are good people and would recommend them for future installations or repairs.

VERY BAD EXPERIENCE

We recently paid $13,000 for a new heat pump system. After a few months it began to give off a strong chemical odor. As a caretaker for my elderly mother, I was concerned for her health. Capital sent out two sets of techs who couldn't find anything wrong. The 2nd tech was also very rude and disrespectful and didn't want to hear anything we had to say.

I contacted the owner (Chuck) who promised that he would send out the vendor to get to the bottom of it. After a few days I called for an update and received a long voicemail stating that he wasn't going to ""waste any more money on us"" when the issue was ""clearly on our end"". He even blamed the smells on smells from outside like drying paint or a nearby Bar-B-Q! He refused to send anyone else over and also refused to contact the vendor even though he previously made that promise to me. He even bragged that in his 26 years of experience he had never seen this issue ... so therefore it was not possible.

I can't really convey how stressful the whole experience was for us. We were genuinely concerned for our health. They unit was not even a year old and ... we had an extended warranty. And now we were being denied service by the manager himself? They left me choice but to contact another local company ... at my own cost. That company quickly diagnosed the issue in less than 5 minutes and couldn't have been nicer or more professional.

The point of all this is that the service that we received from Capital was just pathetic. There's no other word for it. We chose Capital based on previous user ratings and based on the claims on their website of great customer service and experience. But when they came onsite... they only did the bare minimum cookie cutter tests and then quickly blamed us for the problem. No one there seemed to have the will, or experience, or desire to troubleshoot beyond the very basic routine steps or to think outside the box.

I've never written a long online review like this before, but I feel like I had no choice and that I have a responsibility to share my experience with others. I can't speak for other people's experiences, only my own. The entire experience with just a failure on every level form the very top on down.

In short, the true measure of a company is not just how well they do when things are going right, but rather how they respond and treat you when things go wrong. The company that eventually helped us couldn't believe that Capital did not see something obvious that was right in front of their face the whole time, and worse, that they tried to cover their lack of basic troubleshooting by blaming the customer.

Emergency AC problem. They came first thing the following day and had it repaired in 30 minutes. Excellent service and friendly, knowledgeable tech.

Came out to my home and, despite the tech being very nice, stated that they did not have the right van/ equipment for my furnace. The tech told me they would call back later that same day to resolve. Hadn't received a call within a few hours so I called them and was told the schedule planner would definitely call me back by the end of the day. Never called. Finally, when I called them back about a week later, I was told they couldn't schedule me for at least a month out. Told them thank you, but no thank you. They should ask for a photo of the furnace in advance so they can make sure they have the right equipment for the day of your scheduled appointment. Seems like a no brainer for a company that supposedly knows what they're doing.

I've been using Capital HVAC for around 2-3 years. Every year I sign up for the maintenance plan. My HVAC unit is a few years old so it's relatively new still. The past two years the techs have tested everything out and said everything works great!

That's not true though. As soon as we get to the first week of cold temps. below 30, I find out that my heating strips aren't activating. Everything is great until it gets really cold- when you really need heat. I do feel that the service call of $130 is wasted if they drive away and I still don't have the problem fixed.

They had one technician come out, then sent another one a week later to ""re-check"" the initial assessment. We discussed getting quotes for both repairing and replacing our a/c. They sent the repair quote. Never heard back about the replace quote, and I called them three times about it, never heard back from them. A month later, I finally I went with a competitor. Do not appreciate the poor communication.

We purchased a new furnace and heat pump in 2019 from Capital Heating and Cooling that they then installed. Less than a year later the pump failed due to a faulty control board. They installed a new one. Less than a year later the heat pump stopped working again and their technician determined that the control board had not been wired properly, and fixed it and adjusted the temperature control. In February, 2022, about a year later, the heat pump stopped working. Capital sent out a mechanic to determine what the problem was and he said we had to pay $150 for his consultation before they would order the part and fix the heat pump. I felt that I shouldn't have to pay this fee since we had been having so many problems with this heat pump that was less than 2-1/2 years old. After contacting Customer Service I was told that we had to pay the $150 before they would go any further. I agreed to pay it, since they would not listen to anything I had to say about it and then they sent an estimate for over $1500. I called Customer Service again who said I would have to speak to Chuck Schmedke. When I was finally able to get him on the phone he stated that we should have bought the service agreement that would cover labor on any repairs and would not consider any reductions. I asked him if this was the way to treat a customer and suggested that I would give them a negative review if they wouldn't respond to my complaints. I told him that they were the ones who sold me the heat pump and that I didn't think I would need to do many repairs on a brand new heat pump within the first few years, which is why I declined the service agreement. He said that in the end, I chose the heat pump, not him, and that they didn't really need my business and that I should find another company to do the repairs. I did find another company who did the repair and charged a total of $700 for about 3 hours worth of labor. All the technicians were very helpful but watch out for Management/Customer Service.

The customer comes first at Capital Heating & Cooling. Our heater has been intermittently failing and another company incorrectly diagnosed the issue as the gas valve. When that didn't solve the problem, they diagnosed the control board without even looking at it. I called Capital Heating & Cooling and Josh came out and inspected the ""easy"" things that could have caused the problem. He then actually looked at the control board and showed me where he saw the evidence of bad connections. Josh actually took the board out so he could show me evidence of the problem not just on the front, but on the back of the board. Throughout the entire interaction, it was clear that correctly diagnosing the issue and ensuring that I understood how he arrived at his conclusion was Josh's priority. I feel completely confident that the issue was correctly diagnosed and that Capital Heating & Cooling will stand behind their work.

We had terrible dust in the house and Poot performance from our brand new dryer. Capital Heating and aCooling cleaned all of our ducts and the compacted dryer vent (which is a huge fire risk). The technician, PJ Pula, was excellent and showed me the pictures of before and after the ducts were cleaned. The job was down professionally and efficiently. Worth every penny to be breathing better and have clothes without lint all over them.

One of your drivers was driving extremely aggressive tonight. I had my kid in the car and they were tailing me unsafe, every stop they were close numerous times to hitting my car. I left a vm with your business with details. Be careful if you see one of their vans on the road. Not safe drivers.
