Recommended Customer Reviews
Michelle C.We bought a house in Annandale knowing that it had some plumbing issues, so it was important to find a plumber we could trust. Jim Crowley and his plumber Kenny have been great. They took the time to explain the issues and gave honest recommendations. We couldn't find our main water shut-off valve. Kenny finally found it today and I told him his reward is he's stuck with us for clients for as long as we live here!
Great reliable service. Fast responding and no issues. Would recommend to anyone. Very professional and organized.
Very happy with the prompt and professional service I recieved the plumber was on time and acted professional . The problem was fixed in no time . The bill was reasonable and the service was excellent . Thanks
I would avoid hiring this plumber, as I got the sense that he was looking out for his own interests rather than mine.
My usual plumber, whom I trust, was indefinitely unavailable and recommended Jim Crowley. Unfortunately, because I trusted the referral source, I did not independently research Mr. Crowley.
My main water shutoff valve was leaking, enough to fill the pan I had under it about every 4-5 days. It was no problem to continue emptying it as needed. The weird thing was that I had the shutoff valve completely off, yet my water continued to work inside my house. Now I understand why, but a plumber should have figured this out in about two seconds and saved me the unnecessary expense of not fixing the actual problem. Mr. Crowley did not do this.
Mr. Crowley had said that the water would need to be shut off at the street but did not mention me having it done before his arrival. When I called Fairfax County to confirm that the plumber could do it without them, they said, no, their policy is that no one may shut off the water but them. Otherwise, they may charge me or my plumber a $200 - $250 tampering fee. When I questioned Mr. Crowley about it, he said, ""Yeah, it's their policy, but I've been able to do it plenty of times without them."" This was a red flag to me.
Mr. Crowley ended up putting ""packing"" around the inside of the nut (from what I understand) that was allowing the leak. When I asked him what material that was, he looked at me, annoyed, and with an attitude said, ""It's PACKING."" I do not trust technicians who are unwilling to explain what they are doing inside my home or whose feathers get ruffled by my innocent and sincere questions, especially when I am paying them hundreds of dollars. ""What material is it,"" I persisted? ""Rubber? Plastic?"" ""It's Teflon,"" he answered, then showed it to me. It's a little white roll of non-sticky tape-type stuff that you twist up. He had said that he didn't know if it would stop the leak or fix the main problem. He didn't give me any choices or talk through my options. He unilaterally decided on the course of action.
When he was finished, he called me in and said that it had stopped the leak, but did not fix the main issue, as the water was completely off at the shutoff valve (which I'd already told him), but the water continued to run like normal (which I'd already told him). This meant that I'd need to replace the entire shutoff valve, which would be a $1,200 - $1,500 job, as the spot is hard to reach.
I was still letting all this news digest when Mr. Crowley went out to his van to write up my invoice. We hadn't discussed charges, other than that he'd told me that to replace the main water shutoff, as long as it was accessible would be around $450. I had a figure in my mind that I'd be willing to pay him for the hour that he was at my house putting a little white tape around a nut, even though 20 minutes of that was spent turning off the water at the street, which I could have had the county do for free, and none of it was necessary if he'd just done some critical thinking from the moment he arrived. Max I'd pay for that would be $100.
When he came back in, I balked. He'd written me a bill for $265. You should have seen that Teflon. It was definitely not worth $265. His hourly rate is $175 and he charges a $90 travel fee (from Annandale to North Springfield, a distance of three miles). My other plumber credits the travel fee towards the work if he ends up performing it. ""We talked about this on the phone,"" Mr. Crowley responded to my protests. ""No we didn't,"" I said. He never told me his rates other than the $450 estimate to fix my main problem. (Nor, to his credit and my chagrin, did I ask. Because I made the mistake of trusting him.)
If he had merely noted from the moment he stepped foot inside my house that my water was off yet it continued to run, meaning my entire valve needed to be replaced, I could have put that $265 (or at least $175 of it) towards the $1,000+ job that will actually fix the problem.
I recommend that you avoid Mr. Crowley.
A 30 minute diagnosis of an appliance will cost you about $200-$300. He told me what was wrong with the appliance but couldn't fix it. I don't believe a 30-minute visit without fixing the problem should cost that much. This guy is an @55!
I did not hire this guy but I left a message on the website and out of 8 people he is the only one who contacted me back. He talked to me for 30 minutes explaining things the pros can cons for a little project. The timelines and customer service is something I have never seen in a plumber here.
Mai B.We heard about him from a friend of ours. He is very professional and reasonably priced. He came out the same day and fixed our issue quickly. He charged only for the time he spent. Good and honest plumber!
Regulator T.Jim was referred to me by 5-Star Septic. I am glad I reached out to them. A gentleman named Ron who works for Jim at Crowley Plumbing came to my home in Vienna. Figured out the source of the problem which was located behind the washer dryer unit in the bedroom. He cut out the drywall and found out that the previous owners did not have a Trap in the piping. He immediately installed a trap back there to keep the sewage smell out of my bedroom and closet area where the source of the problem was.
I am very happy with their knowledge and professionalism and thank Ron and Jim for fixing my issue.
Thank you !! You will definitely be getting more of my referral business!
I would NOT recommend Jim Crowley. I heard about him through someone else. I had a relatively small repair. He changed the shower head and neck. In the process he also ruined my bathtub by chipping out a chunk of the enamel. This means in the future my bathtub, where my family bathes, will rust!
Bryan C.We had an emergency plumbing situation where our main sewer line was backing up and flooding the basement. Not a fun time in general, but it just happened to be 6pm on a Saturday... After calling multiple ""24 hour Emergency"" plumbing services (all of which either didn't answer the phone, brushed me off entirely or said they couldn't make it out until Monday morning!) I tried Jim Crowley.
Jim, first of all answered his phone, then listened to our issue with out attitude or annoyance and was available immediately. After working out a very reasonable price over the phone he was at our house within the hour. A short time later he had our main line cleared to the street and everything clean and back to normal.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with the service that Jim provided. As a small business owner myself, I can appreciate his level of professionalism, dedication to the job and attention to detail. You don't often see that anymore.
I highly recommend Jim Crowley and will be calling him for any future plumbing issues that turn up.
