In the spring of 1983, Roger and Jill Buckner founded Buckner's Heating and Cooling. We have consistently provided a full suite of HVAC services to the Kansas City metro area since then. Situated at 1558 Topping in Kansas City, Missouri, we prioritize the needs of residential and light commercial clients with dependable service and replacements. Each year, our team undergoes extensive training, both on-site and off-site, to ensure their skills remain current and sharp. This dedication has led to low turnover and a team of the finest technicians in Kansas City.
Buckner's joined forces with R-Mech in 2023, expanding our team with expert plumbers and drain technicians to serve homeowners more effectively. Adam W.-- July 2024 Update --
When our indoor unit would not kick on, I went outside to see that the compressor was cycling. The inside unit had a code displayed clearly. I called Buckners to have them come take a peek, and service the unit (which was ~1.5yr old). They sent a new technician who did not understand the issue. They first thought the unit was low on refrigerant. They then overcharged the unit. They called to the office for a second opinion. They told me that the TXV was sized/not opening. I once again asked about the code on the front. They did not take a look at the code, which the definition is printed clearly on the inside of the furnace panel.
They wasted four hours of my time, sent the new guy (with no support), overcharged my system, and recommended a repair which I did not need. I then received an email with a $619 dollar estimate for the labor (as parts were covered under the manufacturer's warranty). But don't worry, there's a cheaper member price! They have an offered ""membership"" you can pay for monthly to allow you a discounted cost on a repair you didn't even require.
I asked why the price was so high, becuase it was a 1-2 hour repair, and they said they always estimate high in the case that it takes too long, we would not pay more. Ultimately that behavior only serves the business.
I got a second opinion from a commercial HVAC tech, and he instantly looked at the code, connected a module to read the blower motor status, and recommended a repair. The total time to repair was around one hour.
Ultimately, Buckners was a pretty good company early on, but after they were bought things seem much worse:
- Scammy practices having a ""member"" price ... Labor price is inflated to push you toward a monthly subscription
- Unexperienced technicians deployed without someone to back them up (this is really Buckner's fault, not the new guy)
- Overcharging for simple repairs
- Almost caused damage to my condenser compressor due to over pressurization
- Wasted my time, and I ultimately was in a state of disrepair longer due to their incompetence
The ONLY reason I post these experiences is to warn others who may not be aware of what's happening and have no idea how modern HVAC systems work. Good luck Buckners, I will NEVER call you again for a third chance.
I can relate to Arndam B. previous posting. We used Buckner to install our heating and cooling when we built our house five years ago, along with a couple of smaller units. It was a family owned business and took pride in their service. We were very happy with their support and service. Totally trusted them. But in our last repair something seemed off. Finally figured out that the owner retired and a corporation bought them out. It is old information on the internet about being a family owned business. Roger, the owner, retired some time ago. We have a small unit less than five years old which completely went out. WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE REPAIRING THIS UNIT SO SOON ! They came out to diagnose the issue and charged us $110. Then they came back to repair our unit and charged another $350. We had to argue that a part was still under warranty otherwise it would have been more. In the past, the first service call would have been applied to the repair. Few days later the unit stopped working. They came out and said it was another problem and wanted another $500. It was obvious they did not correctly diagnose the problem the first time or they were simply ripping us off. Another part was needed and they claimed it was not under warranty. If it weren't so hot outside we would have gone to another company. A total of $960 for a very small unit. We know we were ripped off. There is another lady who recently posted about how happy she was with the installation of new air-conditioning. The key to a good company is reliable installation but more important is their approach when something goes wrong and what it is going to cost you to fix it.
Not sure when the takeover happened but sometime in 2023. Previous reviews would have been under the old ownership.
Jeannie S.I was very pleased with the person who helped me pick out the new furnace and ac. Very informative. The price was better then others estimates I got. Troy A., Caleb K., and Caleb C. did a great job installing the furnace and ac units. They did a great job communicating with me as well.
Thanks!

Very disappointing experience with Buckner's. When my A/C unit was not working, they suggested replacing the entire outdoor coil and fixing the unit. Less than a year after that, my A/C stopped working again. When I called them, it took a week for someone to come out and have a look. It has been more than a week since that appointment, and I am still waiting to hear the diagnosis on the issue. When I call their support, I am told I will get a call back, which I never do.
Their work had a 1 year warranty. I am forced to find someone else to come and have a look at the A/C issue now, and will need to look up later on how to file a complaint for this absolutely unacceptable behavior.
I live in Smithville. Buckners put in a new heating/cooling system in this house in February of this year. Both have worked wonderful. But twice when we've had the electricity go off for a few minutes during rain/storms the Honeywell thermostat has erred out and had to be re-booted. It happened today and Honeywell support couldn't get it going again over the phone. I called Buckners at 4:46 pm and talked to Cory. He was wonderful to deal with and so kind. The weather forecast is for 90 degrees tomorrow. Cory scheduled a tech to come this evening. I am so grateful to Cory. The tech that arrived was Ethan. He was done by 6:30 pm. He installed a new thermostat and my house is cool again. Ethan was so knowledgeable and professional. All I can say is Buckners has high quality employees if they're all like Cory and Ethan. I give this company five stars in all my dealings with them.
Sent me a spam email. I don't do business with spammers. When I get spam, it ensures that I will NEVER do business with that company. Why? Because they've invaded my private space uninvited. The email was from [email protected], but the reply to that email was to [email protected]. Why do businesses do this?
Updating this review as I've now been a customer of Buckner's for a couple of years.
I continue to be impressed by the quality of their work and with their ethics as a business. They provide high quality for a fair price, and they make the extra effort to do right by their clients. Austin W. is normally who comes to service our furnace and he is fantastic, I'm always happy to see him.
I'll continue to take my business to Buckner's and would happily recommend others to do the same.
Buckners Heating and Cooling were awesome! Thank you for your scheduling today. They worked with us and our service guy Colton was very thorough and nice. I highly recommend and would use them again!!
What extraordinary experiences we've had with Buckner's repairing our old Lennox heat pump & then replacing it with a much better Trane air conditioner. Every step of the way we were treated with nothing but the utmost kindness and respect. Team members were extremely knowledgable and very patient explaining everything, especially important for seniors like us. Incredible 24/7 emergency response time! No sales pitches. Pricing was fair and upfront. Love that they clearly itemized costs in writing, gave options, and kept detailed records. They called ahead to confirm and were on time. Every promise was kept. Hats off to Austin, Gary, Zach and Steve! You earned our trust and made us feel like family members.
Jennifer S.We woke up to an extremely cold house. Our furnace was toast and due to its age we knew we wanted to replace rather than repair. Having an 18 month old who won't keep covers on, waiting until my husband got back from his business trip wasn't an option. The first company I called couldn't help us until next week but referred us to Buckner Heating and Air. Boy am I glad they did! I called and was put in touch with Steve who said he could come out and take a look right then! He gave me pricing over the phone which allowed me to discuss with my husband which option we wanted. Came in and did a great job and I had heat by 11am. Fantastic service. Thank you!
