Bonfe Plumbing, Heating & Air Service
Company Overview
For over three decades, Bonfe has offered trustworthy home repair services to homeowners in the Twin Cities region. We specialize in heating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and appliance repair, and our experienced team guarantees quality work from the start.
Starting in 1993, Bonfe was a single-person plumbing business. Thanks to perseverance and customer loyalty, the owner decided to incorporate heating and air conditioning services. In a move to improve service, Bonfe expanded to include electrical, drain cleaning, and appliance repair.
I started working at Bonfe in 2006, but my relationship with the Bonfe family goes back to 1981. I have seen this business transform from a solo venture into a successful company with more than 100 staff members, and we are about to move into a new 40,000 square foot building. The company and its owners are committed to delivering an outstanding experience at a fair price. Our extensive base of repeat clients demonstrates that our focus on detail is valued and that our rates are competitive in the market.

The technician showed up on time to do an annual furnace inspection and tune-up. He told us that one of the solenoids needed replacement, and he just happened to have one in his van for more than $150. Luckily, we have HomeSmart from Xcel Energy, so we had them send out one of their technicians to do the actual repair. The HomeSmart guy told us the solenoid was absolutely fine, but replaced it anyway just to be safe. It was a $7 part, so the HomeSmart technician gave it to us for free. I wouldn't trust Bonfe again, after they tried to rip us off.
I recommend not using Bonfe. My boiler died and I needed to buy a new one. Bonfe knew that I was desperate because it was going to snow and the temperature was dropping below 0. Bonfe tried to sell me a $12,000 boiler. When I went online the boiler that they were trying to sell me received horrible reviews--literally there was not 1 positive review. I then called Boehm's Heating and Air Conditioning and received a boiler for $5,600 that received stellar reviews.
Lesson learned: Bonfe's will take advantage of you and charge you way more then what you need to spend. Bonfe's lacks professionalism and integrity. In addition, they will try and sell you poor quality products just to benefit their bottom line which is to make a profit. Use any company besides Bonfe if you care about quality. In addition, Bonfe's refuses to allow for you to enter into a payment plan with them unless you get a credit card through them AND they will charge you interest. I would like to know how many people have $12,000 laying around. Again, DO NOT USE Bonfe.
David K.I just switched to Bonfe from an other well known twin cities heating and plumbing company. The difference was night and day. Tom at Bonfe was very knowledgable and honest.
Kyle showed up on time. He was very courteous and diligent. He was able to answer some questions I had. Bonfe's always provides great service, starting with its customer representative team.
ROBBERY
I had a few minor leaks at a rental property so I called Bonfe to come out and make the repairs. The toilet was running and there was a leak under the sink.
First off, they showed up an hour early and no one was home, so they had to reschedule.
When the service technician called me for the repair bid he told me he would do the repairs for $350 and that he was giving me a deal. After pressing him for facts, the toilet mechanisms inside needed to be replaced and the garbage disposal under the sink was loose.
The inside ""guts"" on a toilet cost $15 and it can be fixed in about 10 minutes. The garbage disposal just needed to be tightened. I told him this and he didn't even argue the facts, but he told me that having an office, a big truck and getting a plumber's license was expensive, so that is why they charged so much. Basically too much overhead.
After telling him that a handyman would fix those repairs for way less, he tried lying to me by saying that a licensed plumber is the only one that can do those types of repairs. ""You have to be a licensed plumber to repair anything that touches water."" BS I told him to take a hike.
DONT USE BONFE UNLESS YOU LOVE WASTING MONEY
I called a handyman and he came out the same day and repaired everything for $80.
There are good things about Bonfe - the availability of weekend and evening hours, and generally they can get out to you quickly in an emergency situation. Having previously owned a midcentury home in Highland Park, we needed to do some upgrades. Most of the servicemen that came out were professional and friendly. What is unfortunate, and in my opinion, a very poor business practice (from a consumer's perspective), is that they charge an $89 trip fee just to get an electrician/plumber/etc. out to your home even for a routine repair and won't give any estimates over the phone (despite having a book of all prices readily available). For example, if you want them to install a new toilet they have a fixed price for that, but won't give it to you over the phone so instead they send a plumber to your house, look in their book of prices, and then you find out that their prices are twice as expensive as other plumbers in the area and at that point you are already $89 in the hole if you choose to go with someone more affordable. (And, once you already have someone out at your house, you just want to get the job done instead of waiting around for another service call - which of course Bonfe knows and is one of the reasons they don't give you their prices over the phone.) It cost us over $800 to have a valve replaced under our sink! I have no complaints about the work done by Bonfe in my home, but their prices are outrageous and I would much rather work with a company that can provide estimates for routine services so you know what you are getting into before undertaking a project.
Garbage disposal was leaking and needed replacement. Bonfe quote $868. However, if i would sign up for their Bronze annual service plan at $19/mo, the price would be reduced to $738. If I would sign up for their Gold annual service plant the $69/mo the price would be reduced to $538/mo.
The Service Technician only had with him a garbage disposal with a chrome collar. My kitchen fixtures are all nickel finish. He told me it would take 3 days to get one in nickel finish and cost an additional $130 over the $868 for a total price of $998. I told him to forget it, paid his $89 service call charge and got someone else to replace my garbage disposal with nickel finish for a total of $258. Buyer beware!
Shawn N.Response time was awesome, friendly plumber, very dependable/knowledgeable.
This place come out to check out our AC unit as the fan stopped spinning. After a few minutes he tells me that I need to replace my fan blower to the tune of $800! I quickly pulled up the replacement part of cozy parts.com and it was a $100 part and, in the end, took me 15 minutes to do myself.
I get companies need to make a profit...but $700 for 15 minutes of work?! I think not. Avoid this company like the plague unless you hate your money in which case they are all too happy to take it from you.
Never Never Never. They will way overcharge you. They will come into your house, then go back outside to ""look in their catalogue"" and come back in with some outrageously inflated numbers (quotes). This guy tried to charge around $450 to have a wax ring replaced on my toilet. Are you frigging kidding me. What's worse is he tired to isolate me in another room away from the male bystander I had in my house for security so he could talk money in front of a woman whom he assumed would be an easy pushover. I was so deeply offended by this tactic. Puke. And then to try to quadruple to price? oh please. I got a licensed plumber to do it for $85. Never use this company unless you want to throw your money away and get treated like you are trying buy a used car from a sleezeball.
