In the year 1923, William Bolton Sr. transitioned from the Atlantic Coastline Railroad of the Rocky Mount area to oversee the construction of the mechanical system for the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel. He worked as its engineer for a short time after the project was finished. In 1925, William Bolton Sr. established W.E. Bolton Company to set up and maintain coal-fired heating and refrigeration systems for local dairies and meat production companies.

The youngest of William E. Bolton III's sons, Mark Bolton, began working at Bolton Construction & Service of WNC, Inc. after receiving a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Systems from the University of Wyoming, Laramie.
