Heather H.Hired BigGuyForHire to move me from my 3 bedroom condo to a new condominium approximately 15 miles away. I chose this company based on their Yelp reviews and I couldn't have been more pleased with the service provided. Derek, Derek and Ali called to tell me when they would arrive, very carefully covered and packed my furniture and boxes in the truck I supplied. They were incredibly friendly, polite, conscientious and efficient. They didn't rush, so the whole process took close to 6 hours, but they were thorough and careful and did an amazing job!! It was well worth the money spent to have a seamless move and to not resort to recruiting reluctant friends to do a marginal job, threatening both themselves with injury and my possessions with damage. Will use Big Guy for any future moves and will happily recommend them to others!
Sabrina B.Let me first start by saying I LOVE THESE GUYS. Seriously, excellent and fast service at a more than reasonable cost.
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I actually had to re-schedule numerous times and they rolled with the flow and had no problem accommodating me and my crazy schedule AND they did it two days before Christmas.
Now I had been looking at my packed up (mostly) house and just wanted to cry basically. How is all this junk going to get moved? No worries, Eric and Derek worked as a flawless team and had my stuff packed up in (2) 14' truck loads. This is including appliances such as a full refrigerator! I probably should have just rented the larger truck, but frankly, I suck at estimating measurements so two trips it was.
Would I use them again? Yes. No question.
Dependable and efficient? Yes, extremely.
If you're looking to move, you will not go wrong hiring Big Guy for Hire.
Mike C.Was exactly as expected and promised. To keep costs to a minimum we used Big Guy and rented a U-haul, and the they did not disappoint. Derek and John (different John) expertly moved us. As long as you pay attention to the pricing guidelines on the internet they will do as they say. No one in our circle had used Big Guy but I took a leap and trusted Yelp. Success.
Bill W.Did a great job for a great price. I was looking for movers to help my mother move to Ohio and decided upon Big Guy for hire due to their Yelp reviews and website. They were very quick movers and got the truck loaded up fast. When a problem arose with a hand truck wheel falling off, John stopped the clock until the problem was fixed. When my mothers truck arrived in Ohio to be unloaded by another group of movers, the movers unloading her truck commented on how well the truck was loaded and said that ""This is the way we pack our trucks"". They were extremely accommodating, professional and I highly recommend Big Guy For Hire to anybody looking for movers.
Looks like there's some kind of bizarre war going on on this review page. A bit unsettling.
Anyways, we moved near the end of August out of a 1-bedroom apartment into a larger condo that we had just bought. On the morning of our move, we got a call from them saying they were on their way, and they ended up being a few minutes late (maybe about 7 minutes as far as I can remember), which wasn't a problem because we were frantically still packing like lazy bums anyways.
Our two movers, Derek and Jake, were quick, skillful, and exceedingly polite (it got a little weird to me just how polite they were. Do people honestly demand that kind of interaction? Maybe I'm the weird one, but I'd be perfectly happy with movers that were silent, blunt, to the point, and viciously efficient).
Side tangent: It was fascinating to see how Derek packed the truck I rented. We had the same truck (17') as the last time we moved, and when we did it ourselves a year ago, at the end we were struggling to find enough room in the truck to hold our crap. Not with Derek--he went at it like some kind of freakish Tetris savant. What was a hot mess spilling over into multiple car trips in our hands, only took up about 2/3rds of the truck when Derek was done with it (not putting in any items lengthwise seems to be the key to success).
I drove the truck to our new place with Derek and Jake following behind, where they proceeded to once again quickly and efficiently unload before they were on their way. Nothing broken, everything where I wanted it to be, and the move was completed in 3 hours. I'd highly recommend Derek and Jake again.
Also, after looking into this crazy Yelp war thing, I'm curious if this review is actually going to make it onto the site.
*cannot convey in words how unprofessional and immature this ""big guy"" with a really cool, mellow, soft-spoken voice, came across as being an all-around great guy. until i told him i would not help him move the heavy carts in the manner he described.
*i told him ""this is irresponsible. i willnoty be liable for anybody getting hurt, or damage to the equipment.""
his response: ""you know i'm not insured, right.""
*so, big, (headed, stubborn, childish) john barked back at me: ""never mind, we'll do it!"" (oh! you mean you'll do it...the guys hired to do the heavy lifting (i weigh 150 lbs, and never agreed to help, hence hiring a (and this is used very loosely) ""professional"". i worked my a$$ off to help them out, because john was on the verge of a hissy fit, it was blatantly clear, and i just wanted the stuff moved.
*we explained, this has been done twice per year for the past 5 years. everytime it's done the same, without a single problem. 1)unload the racks. 2) move the racks 3) reload the racks. & repeat when we undo it.
*john refused to unload the racks, so i refused to help. primarily for safety reasons, secondarily, for liability reasons (the contents costs $15,000)**
*guess what happened????
john both--dropped a rack on his foot, and screamed at me and my female friend, in a violent, threatening manner...use profanity, blamed everyone, including uhaul...dropped our equipment on the ground, damaging 1 piece!!
*did john apologize? hay-hay!!!
*no!! he walked off the job!!!
(his car wasn't even there, so i have no idea where he went, but the whole neighborhood heard him yelling & screaming profanities as he and his mover walked down the neighborhood street ...still screaming profanities.**
*myself, and an 17 year old ""kid"" (this kid weighs no more than 120 lbs), finished the job within 20 minutes, **simply by unloading, removing the rack, then reloading.**
*so, yeah, john saved us some money, alright, we didn't pay him!
he's lucky i didn't seek litigation for breech of contract, amongst others....
**lastly: this was not the first time we hired john. in times past he followed directions, and didn't expect me to work for him, nor did he blame/play the victim regarding everything. however, this was a bit more of a heavy/technical move. so for boxes, he was a nice guy.
*however...there is simply no excuse for his threatening behavior (he does that ""gentle giant"" thing well, until his rage gets ahold of him),
*walking off the job in the midst of a time-sensative move
*rousing & disturbing the whole neighborhood with yelling & profanities!!!
**seriously--i have managed properties, work in energy services, lived all over the country. i have never witnessed such blatant immaturity and anger issues erupt in such a relatively unprovoked manner.
* the least professional uninsured-non-professional i have ever seen. i have seen guys get tazered for less. (seriously)
Donna J.Please note how the owner of this business claims all one star reviews to be either fake reviews or insane people, but from his responses on here it is fairly easy to see how he is to work with when everything isn't going perfect. I can also provide anyone a copy of the receipt to prove we hired this company and that this is a totally legitimate review.
The service of Big Guy For Hire was excellent! My husband and I were moving from a house to a condo. They were on time and they took their time to wrap our items and ensure that they were organized correctly for the drive. While unloading they took time to help with placement and were courteous and helpful. The price was very reasonable compared to bigger named companies that I was initially considering. I found his company on a whim after reading some horrible reviews of the service of Two Men and a Truck in our local area. I would recommended Big Guy For Hire to anyone and will be calling them whenever we move again.
Kristine W.John worked with my husband and I on our out-of-state move. We had about a month to plan a move from Michigan to Virginia, and we found ourselves completely overwhelmed. We settled on a high-rise apartment in Arlington, and it posed two major moving challenges: 1. It was in a crowded area, and 2. The building required you to use a service elevator to move in, and you had to schedule this ahead of time. Every moving company we contacting was extremely expensive, and wanted to charge us extra to set our delivery date. They all said we could expect our stuff within 5-14 days, and we might know the day before. This wouldn't work for us. When we found Big Guy for Hire, and learned that John accompanies you every step of the move, we were relieved.
John and his assistant showed up the day before our move to pack our truck. What had taken us a week to pack was loaded in about an hour. The next day, we left early in the morning for Virginia, and I think John actually ended up leaving before us.
En route, I got a troubling call on my cell phone. The girl from our complex was calling me from her cell phone: the night before our move, Virginia had gotten one of their worst storms on record. There was no power anywhere, we couldn't use the elevator, there was no where for us to park our moving truck, and she didn't know what to tell us. Naturally, I panicked.
We immediately called John, who was very calm. After talking in through, the plan was to continue on and assess the situation once we arrived. As we pulled up to our complex, we saw trees down, no one was out, and all the traffic lights were dark.
John waited as we went in and signed our lease. We were given flashlights, and the promise that IF the power came back on, we would have the elevator all to ourselves. John has a flight home the next day, and we knew our move HAD to happen that day. We waited around for a bit, and as my husband and I were about to book a hotel room ourselves, the lights flickered and the power came back on! We were relieved.
The power came on at 6 pm, and John had us moved in by 10 pm. He worked fast, and with great care. In all the chaos, nothing was broken, or even dented. He helped us return our Uhual truck, which was also a relief, seeing as how the traffic lights were still out.
During our entire chaotic move, John was calm and professional. We felt safe trusting all of our belonging to him during the drive, and we appreciated his flexibility with everything that happened. He answer all of our questions prompting leading up to the move, and treated our move like it was important to him (unlike the big moving companies that treated us like a number).
We would highly recommend Big Guy for Hire to anyone moving anything anywhere...in state or out.
Carol L.John was great! I needed someone to load my truck, drive and unload. He was recommend to me by a classmate of mine in grad school in Michigan. After he and his staff helper got to my apt in Ann Arbor, they packed the truck with my 1 bedroom apt-sized amount of belongings very quickly and carefully. All of my fragiles were intact after we arrived in Chicago 4 hours later. John also unloaded the truck JUST as quickly. The pricing was reasonable and professionalism top-notch. I liked John because I think he had my stuff's best interest in mind. I would highly recommend him any day!
