It's possible our plumber, Lenny, was the lemon. But he said he knew our property from previous visit when it was with our seller. He quoted a flat charge for labor: $198/hr, and cost for parts. He didn't mention about minimum one hour charge, but I saw reviews that said Babuska was ""reasonable"" so I didn't think he would charge for the whole hr if it wasn't going to take the whole hr.
Long story short, we inquired about some major work, he said they cannot be done because 1) unless the city shuts off the water for the whole block, he cannot even diagnose the problem, 2) replacing the faucet will require taking the whole tile block out and he doesn't do that. Then he resolved some minor issues such as low water pressure in the kitchen sink, which was due to the old water filter (he unhooked the supply line from the filter and connected directly to the main line), replacing the lever and pressure lid for an old toilet, and removing hair from the sink cover. He spent about 30min altogether doing that and he charged me ~$250. No major work, spending 30min fixing little things and charging me $250 seem a bit too steep. Honestly, I felt he's not very competent. But he did work that resolved some of our issues and he did what he knew. So I cannot complain too much. But the price... in my opinion wasn't really reasonable in my book.
I had a similar experience to the other one star review (Suzee Q) in late 2017. Frank Babuska was the plumbing contractor on a renovation of our 1912 home. In the course of the renovation, a sewage backup occurred two times. (There were many workers in the house so the toilets were getting a lot of use.) Frank proposed an incredibly expensive replacement of the sewage pipes in the basement as the only way to solve the problem. As in the case of Suzee Q, he had a business owned by a relative (his son) perform a camera scope of the pipes. On becoming suspicious of Frank's purported ""only way to do it"" repair, I spoke to others who stated that the replacement was unnecessary. I terminated the contractor as a result; in addition, I had suspicions on some of the plumbing billing, which was inconsistent with the original bid. The contractor took me to arbitration. Frank, who was of course an important witness, did not come to the arbitration to defend his work. I prevailed completely in the arbitration; the contractor got NOTHING on his claims (which included over $20,000 for Frank), and I was awarded $75,000 in damages. The replacement plumber fixed the sewage backup issue, which had nothing to do with the old pipes Frank said had to be replaced.
Super helpful and took a look at our plumbing issues and helped us out! Showed up in masks and were very nice and helpful! Definitely recommend for anyone, they are amazing!!
Frank is amazing. He's a little more expensive than some others, but he is incredibly patient and explains everything in detail. Ask every question and you get a detailed answer. If what he proposes is not in your ballpark tell him what you're ready to spend and he can give suggestions that fit. There's someone on call 24 hours a day. I highly recommend Babuska Plumbing.
Suzee Q.No way! I have lived in the Pelham community for about eight years and have used several plumbing contractors when I first arrived - being totally new to New York. Babuska Plumbing was recommended by my architect for a multi-bath renovation. I found Frank very condescending. He didn't know that I understood the fundamentals of plumbing (my father-in-law owned an HVAC company) and knew that his proposed increased scope of work - to the tune of an additional $20,000 - was complete BS. He had a subcontractor, I believe they were related, accompany him at the site and this guy inferred that my family was possibly being supplied with dirty waste water instead of from the municipal water system. OUTRAGEOUS! I was shaken. Subsequently, I paid for two second opinions and sewer camera work, both of which thought Babuska was totally wrong. I related this story to my neighbor, who said that her husband had to forcibly remove this company from his house and will never hire them again. That said, my plumbing project is completed with no major issues and all is working fine.
I agree with Jess K. , and I live in new Rochelle! It's plumbing to an art form. My second floor laundry room was never constructed to its best by my initial builder. Babuska has a circle of talent within his business that rivals the ""Pins and Strips"" ""Boys of Summer"". He also has a network of business relationships like A. J. O. HOME Improvement carpenters et. all, that coordinated perfectly to get me up and running. Believe me, you want a proper area to catch and drain out any issues with water, especially when it's on the 2 nd floor! His associates like Lenny work as if it was their own business. Immaculate! Your stress levels are minimal. I always admired the stealth black trucks giving Pelham a signature service. Thanks again, and I'm happy to be on the boarder of a fortunate town. Jess K.How does Babuska not have any reviews yet! They are a staple in Pelham! Family owned, super nice, knowledgeable, fast response time, just love them! Will came to help us with some plumbing issues when we first moved in and he was a great introduction to Pelham. I really appreciated chatting with him about the town! But also, he fixed our issues so quickly! Then when we had an A/C problem, he and Frank came and fixed it so efficiently and effectively. They will always be who I run to call when we have an issue. Like, right now, hence why I went on Yelp to get their phone number!
