Long story short... had a root blockage at the end of my sewer line where it connects to the city main line, the ""big name company"" in sewers wanted a lot to fix it. Carl of B & G Sewer Specialist came and without knowing the other guys price, gave a quote the was 40% less. He put in a camera to verify and video the issue, got the city permit, then did a fine job making the repair and even put in a clean out pipe so that in the future there is an easy access point. I am very satisfied with the job done by B & G Sewer Specialist and would highly recommend them. Now I just need to get that little mountain of dirt to settle!
My floor drain in my basement stopped working on Friday morning water and ""stuff"" was coming up smelling up the floor. I figured I could save some money by going to the local
rent-a-center in wheaton and getting a rodder. At 125 lbs, this thing was not easy to move but it had 100 ft of wire and I thought I could clear the drain myself. Note to others: this is really a two person job and requires leather gloves. With my wife's help we put out all 100 ft of coil with 3 inch spring tip and did not find the blockage. I took off the toilet in the adjacent room and rodded that out too. No luck. I called the City of Wheaton and they, on a late Friday afternoon, sent a truck out to check out the city sewer. They ran a spray through and I watch the water come out the pipe through the manhole proving it was my problem. I asked if they worked with any plumbers and they said they have worked with both Muelfelt or B&G sewer in the past and that I should use a local plumber in the city of Wheaton.
On Saturday, I called both and Carl Beard from B & G called me back. I explained my situation and Carl said he could make it over in few hours. After looking over the situation, he went and got his RIGID SeeSnake® Drain & Sewer camera (estimated retail $10,000). He found the blockage (yep - tree roots) at 80 ft out and probably under the driveway. I still don't understand how he found it I did not when I rodded it to 100 ft. He had a RIGID metal detector wand that identified exactly how far out the SeeSnake® camera head was. His laptop pinpointed the location by the length of line out as well. On his laptop, the camera in the seesnake shows you only white for the most part on the laptop screen until it goes black and that is the blockage. I have a tree in the parkway right above where the sewer pipe is. He said that some plumbers will try to save money by pushing 3 inch cutting blade through the 4 inch drain and try to reach the obstruction. The problem though is that the drain pipe expands from a 4 inch pipe to a 6 inch pipe and that you lose leverage in cutting the farther out you go. Since this was almost under my driveway, he recommended digging/excavating about 5 ft down, putting in a clean out pipe extension and then rodding from that point. The total cost would be a little over $2000. Not having a sewer for over a day and that fact that I had already spend $90 for days worth of rodding myself, I spent the additional money. While I hate spending money as much as the next guy, it was nice to deal with 1 person for the camera, the excavating and the sewer pipe. I did call one other plumber and he quoted about $400 for rodding alone . However, I was leary as I had already tried that. Since I had already tried taking the cheap way out with no luck and burned a day off from work, I spent the money and had the work done. Carl came back on Monday with backhoe about 10 ft tall and excavated the soil with 1 other guy's help. They broke the pipe and we could use the toilets and showers again on Monday. On Tuesday, the city came and inspected where they put in the clean out portion.Carl pulled the permit as he said he would.
I did not even get another quote for what others would charge for winter excavation. Carl did what he said he was going to do when he said he was going to do it. I now have a mound of dirt 2 feet high in my front yard that he said to put a hose directly into to help it settle. Carl said even if I were to cut the tree down, the roots would continue to grow for up to 8 years I am very satisfied with result and the fact hat I can clean this out in a two three years without having to call some one else. I also saved my tree. Carl gave me a DVD of the camera footage as well. I would recommend Carl Beard and his company B&G Sewer Specialists.
