AW Crooks Plumbing, Heating & Cooling
Company Overview
Our narrative
Arthur W. Crooks, our founder, came into the world during the year 1885 in the town of Goshen, Indiana and moved to Sturgis, MI during his childhood. Despite being the top student of his graduating class, he received a scholarship at Hillsdale College, but financial constraints prevented him from attending.
He worked as a teacher in the town of Colon, Michigan and by 1907 he settled in Battle Creek to embark on his plumbing journey.
In 1909, he became the plumbing inspector in the city of Battle Creek, however returned to his plumbing work in 1911 by joining Hanchett Plumbing, which he later acquired in 1912. At that time, his pay was 12.5 cents for each hour worked.
The children of Arthur, Helen, Walt, and Warren all participated in the plumbing industry. Helen along with Warren continued to run the business from the 1950s onward until March of 1980. Now, the company is owned and operated by Arthur's grandson, Arthur W. Crooks II.

Katharina G.Gotta love that they came out to give me an estimate and send a bill for service .. the name explains everything!
BUYER BEWARE of AW Crooks: We had a gas water heater start leaking just before Christmas 2018 and called AW Crooks, who we have used in the past, to check it out-- not an emergency situation at that point, but we decided to replace the unit. The phone quote was very expensive, nearly $1000, but was told this was due to the Battle Creek city code change now requiring separate chimney venting for gas water heaters and gas furnaces. The unit was installed in the extreme cold of January, so the chimney work couldn't be completed until warmer weather. I asked the technician if we were going to be charged for this return trip, but he assured me that we had paid for the whole job, so not to worry about it. Once the weather improved, the work was completed. Never heard back from Crooks with the paperwork needed for scheduling the city inspection. After about a week, I contacted the Crooks office staff, and she didn't even know the job was done; so I waited another week to hear back and was then told not to contact the city yet as there was another invoice coming for just the venting work. Despite my protest that I was never told about this separate charge, I received a bill for another $1000! I am disgusted by this non-disclosure in the original Crooks quote that more than doubled my bill and refuse to pay unless ordered to do so by a legal authority. Hopefully this review will help others know the right questions to ask about the whole cost of replacing gas water heaters and furnaces that meet city code... and get it all in writing upfront by someone more trustworthy than AW Crooks.
Joyce Z.Had a mini split installed into our addition. A W Crooks did a fantastic job, and their estimate was the final cost unlike our addition. Very happy with the mini split unit--heats and cools our 480 square feet very well and quietly!
Quick response. Reasonable pricing. Friendly staff. Would use again.
Highly recommend!!! From the onset of my called to Bonnie and then on to the tech John both were great representatives for AW Crooks. Bonnie listened patiently while I tried to explain my situation on what needed to be done and she clearly explain the base costs. John upon arrival was very professional and easy to communicate with. With the several things that John had to do, I felt the costs were very reasonable and not inflated!
Absolutely unprofessional and inadequate work! An exterior faucet was leaking and the company came out twice to charge for a service call and ""replace parts."" Long story short, the faucet has continued to leak for days and after multiple phone calls to get the active water leak serviced again, the owner came out a third time and suggested to replace the entire faucet and also charge for an additional service call. My young children were present as he was arguing, and making a scene in our neighborhood regarding the wasted cost that we have spent on multiple service calls that his inadequate business has provided for us. No apologies, yet he was rude completely I knowledgeable. As a small business owner, I wondered how he can sleep at night! Avoid AW CROOKS at all cost, literally! It will save you money and time.
Very friendly and prompt. Each time we have called for help, they fit us in within a short time frame. The one concern we had after a sump pump installation, was handled promptly and professionally.
I had already moved out of the house when my realtor discovered a cracked water pipe that flooded the basement. She recommended AW Crooks. It could have been a pain in the neck, with me being out of state, but everything went very smoothly... including the billing. I would definitely recommend them.
Hilary G.Bought a water heater from Crooks a few years back, and the pilot light won't stay lit. I have paid for several service calls, coming in at around $90 each time to come in and light a pilot. We clean around the water heater regularly as instructed so that pet hair and such will not put the pilot light out.
It happened again today, and my husband had some words with the woman on the phone, who claimed that we owed them the $90 from a previous visit. My husband said he had paid for and gotten a receipt. Suddenly, she admitted that it was a clerical error, and the money had been received. He was running out the door for work, and told the woman he had to go, and hung up with her. She claims he was rude to her for hanging up.
I called to see where the service person was, was just refused service for missing a payment, which was resolved awhile back. I was told the owner ""didn't feel like chasing down his money"" They never called me to say that no one was coming, and I waited around for 2 hours for someone who wasn't even coming. Beware of Crooks, their name will tell you all you need to know.
