My experience with Applewood was negative as well. I called Applewood about a possible leak in my water heater. They said it was $29.00 to inspect it and I went for it. The plumber from Applewood arrived on time and I investigated the water heater myself before he came. I noticed cold water soaked inside the insulation of the water heater. I showed him and he said the water heater was leaking. I said leaking cold water???? What? Then I said it is coming from the cold water insert nipple on top that is leaking. He then said that he has to replace the pressure regulating valve on the water heater to ensure it has been changed out and working properly. I said fine do it. He brought down a package with the regulation valve and said AFTER he installed it that it's a $210.00 valve. Then he quoted me a water heater for a 40 gallon unit that would be $1800.00!!!! No way it costs that much for a water heater! After he replaced it, the valve was a Watts Valve from Home Depot thats only $15.00!!!! WTF!!! I caught him on it after he wrote the invoice and he said he would discount it to $150.00. Really!!!! Then he got scared and told me to just write him a check for the $29.00 for the service fee. I wrote him the check and sent him on his way. So no they are shady with prices on parts for sure.
I have had three experiences with Applewood now and am not impressed, this company is about selling not helping. The first time i had them come out was to look at my evaperative cooler that had poor air flow, they said that the cooling media was plugged up with cottonwood seed and it was 1200 dollars to fix my 2 year old cooler, they did put in a screen to keep the media clean. My second go with them was having them look at my tankless hot water heater. They recomended I replace the gas line to the water heater for the tune of 900 dollars. My original install for the heater was done with a flexible gas line 3/4 inch. They had problems with their thread cutting tools and had to have someone bring out a new tool for them to compleat the job. After the job they took the original gas line that was used without asking me,the line I just paid someone else for. I had a use for the line and they stole it. Strike three was I had a free furnace cleen and inspection, I am selling the house and needed the furnace inspected for the sale, the furnace passed the safety inspection but they recomended I replace the furnace for age. I requested they remove the recommendation for a new furnace, being the furnace passed inspection, and they refused. Now I am consulting someone else. I will never use them again and would not recomend them to my worst enemy. Be aware!!!!!
Jennifer F.NO STARS Came as fast as they could, tried charging me 800.00 to do what they wanted. I asked them to just pull the toilet and snake it, They left !!
lucky for me !!
Decent Service - OUTRAGEOUS COST!!!
Though the service man was very friendly and personable, the cost was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! The cost of installing one kitchen light fixture (That we had already purchased) was $226.00. Basically, the charge was $226.00 / hour. The service man checked our electrical box and stove outlet for safety and installed an already purchased light fixture and it cost $226.00 for about 45 minutes worth of his time - INSANE! I will never use this company again and DO NOT recommend this company.
The quote for installing an already purchased ceiling fan to replace an old one . . . . $230.00 !!!! WOW! I did NOT let him install the fan and only let him do the light fixture because it had flooded from the condo above in the past and wanted to make sure it was safe to use.
If you are willing to spend $1,808+ a day for an electrician, then this company is for you.
Also, their referral program gives the person referring this company a $50 Visa Gift card and $50 off their next service, Does this tell you something about how much they overcharge on a regular basis?
Mitch R.The good, the bad, and the really UGLY.
My furnace fan started making a scraping noise. I tried spinning the fan by hand and encountered some resistance. Hmmm, sounds like a problem so I called Applewood.
The tech checked the fan and said there was alot of slop in the bearing so it is shot. He also checked the heat exchangers on both of my Janitrol 12 year old furnaces and said they were both cracked (even showed me a picture he took with his phone). What followed was a quotes for two new Goodman furnaces (I'm selling the house, so these are middle of the line direct replacements).
The next morning I had time to check the furnaces myself. The bearings on the fan had no slop whatsoever. If fact, it seems that something had been sucked into the fan and was causing the noise and by morning it was gone. The fan spun beautifully. So, LIE #1.
I looked into the the entry of the heat exchangers on both furnaces and they looked fine (this is all he could see in 5 min). And I couldn't figure out where or how he took that picture with his phone. So I called ARS Rescue Rooter (I'll write a review there). They removed the fan, the tech crawled inside and snaked a camera up each exchanger while I watched on a handheld screen. He pointed out the cracks in both furnaces. But they were not what the Applewood guy showed me on his phone (connecting ring). The connecting rings were in perfect shape. So, LIE #2. And where did his picture come from? Obviously someone else's furnace.
The ARS guy wrote me out a quote with 3 furnace options. The middle option was using the exact same furnace as Applewood, but the quote was $3,500 cheaper.
Bottom line - Applewood throws alot of service ""frosting"" at you like little handouts, sending a picture of the tech before he arrives (that's actually really nice), immediate follow up call, etc. They probably do good work. BUT, their sales tactics are deceptive and dishonest, and their pricing is well into the gouging range. There are better options out there.
Candy P.TOTAL RIPOFF!!!!
I had a slow drain in tub and bathroom sink that just needed to be snaked...or so I thought. They many looked at it, then quoted me to unclog. Little did he tell me that the only problem was a little hair wrapped around the drain plug. He fixed each drain in 5 minutes and charged $300 TOTAL for 10 minutes of work!!!!
Yes, their customer service is very kind...but better customer service would have been to tell me that the hair could have been removed by myself.
$300 wasted...lesson learned...never use Applewood again!
Dead Man W.Applewood consistently charges far above the going rate for a job, plumbing or heating. I won't call them anymore. I am glad to see that on Yelp at least, some of the reviewers are expressing their dissatisfaction with Applewood's exorbitant prices.
For example, I called them about replacing my furnace, and not only did Jason tell me I needed to spend 3X the going rate but that I had to pay an electrician $800-900 for replacing a working switch with a fusible one plus a $100 inspection fee. They will also charge you $25 more for the permit than it costs them which other companies don't do. And they couldn't seem to make it to the job on time. Their dispatcher was very rude and a virtual study in poor communication.
The technicians may be quite courteous and do a great job, but so do a lot of companies. These guys are big for a reason and not necessarily because they do a better job than other heating companes in the area.I suggest that you save your hard-earned money and shop around first before hiring these guys..
Total rip-off. I had Applewood Heating come out to fix my boiler heater. The pilot light would not stay on and it needed a new thermal coupler. That charge was $234.00 and that is not the reason for this review. The technician ""Keith"" found that the expansion tank was bad and that it needed replaced immediately. He stated that the boiler unit itself could have ""exploded"" if the relief valve had failed. He also stated that he could not do any repairs unless this was approved. The price to replace this 2 gallon tank came to $615.00 installed. The tank itself hooks up to a 1/2"" pipe and screws on, no soldering required. I went online and found the exact same tank available for $22.49. Keith was here for about an hour fixing the 2 things with the boiler heater. The total bill came to $842.00. I can understand paying $100 - $200 for the tank since they have to keep it on the truck, and they need to make a profit. Charging over $600.00 is a blatant rip-off and I will never use this company again.
Ok so this is why you will never have my business again and I will blast Applewoods name to everybody I know.
First of all Chris told me that the heat exchanger on my furnace was cracked. I had Xcel out the day before and he didn't say anything about the heat exchanger being cracked (RED FLAG) but did identify a gas leak at the pilot tubing.
Then Chris refused to fix the gas leak, a minor repair. That alone would have cost you my future business.
Then Chris tried to sell me a furnace. He didn't discuss types of furnaces, furnace efficiency, explain what my options were and surprisingly didn't even mention the possibility of replacing the air conditioning unit.
So many red flags, one technician!!! Soooo being an intelligent person I got a second opinion. Surprise, surprise...heat exchanger is not cracked!!! Man that makes me angry! Preying on people at a time when the economy is bad! And the temperature is dropping down to 5 degrees! A big company like Applewood!! I'm shocked! I disillusioned! And I'm angry!!
I had to scramble to get space heaters. Some of my family drove an hour to bring some. I stressed about how I was going to pay to have a furnace installed. I'm an old lady on disability! What a load of...well you know!
On top of it all I had to pay $29.00 for this piece of work!
Today I had an ""HONEST"" company come out and FIX my furnace. It cost me $168.00. It took the technician an hour. It is running perfectly. He checked for carbon monoxide leaks. Nothing! They will have my business FOREVER and I will sing their praises to everbody that I know!! I hope that I can send them a lot of business although I suspect that they are already swamped. Honesty, ethical and good business practise gets you what you want to keep alive. What I just went through will cost you. Maybe you think ""no loss"" but don't be too sure. I have one word for you ""carma""!
What a crock!!
Do not call this company. Do not even get an estimate. It will be a waste of money since, as you can read from many of these reviews, they will gouge you, resulting in adding their $29 estimate charge to the bill of the legitimate plumber you will be forced to call. Also, ignore the glowing, cherry-picked reviews on Applewood's website.
I had used a very good local neighborhood plumber (Abode Plumbing) for many years but he recently closed shop forcing me to search for a new one. I usually am very good at reviewing service before calling but was in a hurry and unfortunately called Applewood. I subsequently discovered Applewood uses their service people as an extended sales force, training them to inflate and add unnecessary charges, such as warranties that already are provided by manufacturers. They have even had service people quit because they were forced\asked to act in such an unethical manner.
We had an older hot water heater that needed to be replaced and I got an estimate from Applewood for $3,000! Unbelievable. I vaguely remember having it replaced around 10 years ago for less than $1,000. The serviceman said there was a warranty provided by them included. But he refused to break down the estimate into line items from which I could determine the labor, parts and so-called warranty costs. It was some kind of ""book"" price. In a past career, I worked in field service for 20 years and have never seen such an unprofessional estimate
Of course I refused the estimate and reaffirmed on-line that, at most, a hot water replacement should cost no more than $1,200. Wow, somebody at Applewood won't have their Christmas bonus supplemented by me!
I then went with Zane Michalko Plumbing, in large part, due to their high marks on Yelp for both service and integrity. What a difference. The estimate\cost was a flat cost of $950 and they followed up with the good service I was accustomed to from my past plumber. I highly recommend Zane Michalko plumbing.
