South Shore 1871: our founder Alvin Hollis was both a pioneering entrepreneur and a dedicated community member.
In those days, most people relied on hay and grain. To minimize expenses, Alvin established a railroad siding and acquired goods in large quantities. Horses pulled wagons for deliveries to homes and farms.
Expanding into heating and cooling, Alvin started providing firewood and ice. Alvin purchased woodlots, built an ice house by Weymouth Great Pond, and provided year-round deliveries to residences, farms, and businesses.
As coal replaced wood, Alvin and son-in-law Leonard Bicknell built a contemporary coal storage plant and employed motorized trucks for delivery.
As coal systems progressed, we launched Central Heating Systems in the South Shore.
Alvin Bicknell, the son of Leonard, moved from coal to oil by implementing numerous early automatic heating systems in the state.
From cutting hay to cutting-edge HVAC solutions, we have served over 1 million customers in the South Shore. Give us a call! We would love to assist you too.
Hi, I'm Laura Bicknell Carbone.
My great-great-grandfather made Alvin Hollis thrive by treating our customers and employees like family. Since 1871, we have continued this tradition by keeping our South Shore neighbors safe and comfortable.
My grandfather and father took pride in the smiles of our customers who appreciated their expertly crafted heating, cooling, and plumbing systems. Being part of the fifth generation, I feel that same satisfaction.
Starting as a part-time worker in my teens, I have engaged in all areas of our business. In 1991, I received my Bachelor of Science degree from St. Lawrence University. Since then, I have been dedicated to Alvin Hollis full-time, specializing in Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service.
In 1995, I started cycling alongside my dad in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon, together raising almost $800,000 for Dana Farber. I sit on the board of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and am proud to be a Platinum Member of the President's Circle at South Shore Hospital.

Z R.Alvin Hollis was the third company we consulted for installing central A/C in our 1800s home. The salesperson we met with was extremely knowledgeable, was the only person who arrived with a tape measure to take measurements, and was able to show us exactly where the condenser and evaporator would go. The price was what we were expecting; they were able to install within a few weeks of consulting with us (in August 2020)!
Our oil burner cracked the Friday of (a very cold) President's Day weekend. After searching for someone to come and look at it, and give us a price on installing a new one - Alvin Hollis returned my message and arrived on the holiday.
The installation was done 3 days later and we couldn't be happier with the service that Alvin Hollis provided. The team is courteous, professional and safely follows all Covid protocol.
We now have secured a service contract with Alvin Hollis and are very pleased with our decision.
We have had a terrible experience with this company, and one that keeps getting worse. They installed a boiler in our home two years ago. This year, the vent damper they sold and installed broke. They came and replaced it, and tried to charge us for both the part and labor, despite the fact that it was under warranty. It broke again, two months later. They again replaced it, and now are insisting on charging us again, for the same part and labor, that they have now failed twice to properly supply and install. We tried to submit a negative review on their website, and it was blocked. So while you will notice that their website contains only positive reviews, the reason appears to be that they refuse to post negative reviews and simply cherry pick the positive ones to make the company look good. A very sketchy operation, to say the least.
Karen F.I have used Alvin Hollis for 5 years now and I can't say enough good things about them. Last week I finally had to replace my boiler and a skilled technician got right on it and finished the job quickly. From the phone answerer to the technicians, all really know their stuff. Very professional, prompt, easy to do business with. I have recommended them to several friends and others in my condo building.
Robert T.I had a minor leak in my basement so I called my oil company, Alvin Hollis, to come check it out. It turned out that my water heater needed replacing. I have oil heat and gas hot water and have been considering a conversion to gas for sometime now. I decided that there is no better time than the present to do this as I already needed a new water heater. The technician that was at my house said he would have somebody call me later that afternoon or the following day. Three days later, while my water heater continued to leak, I had yet to hear back from Alvin Hollis. I contacted another plumbing service, Blue Bear plumbing, who sent someone out the same day and scheduled the oil conversion the following day. Because of Alvin Hollis' lack of urgency and concern for their customers problem they lost a significant amount of business. I have been in Alvin Hollis customer for many years and am very disappointed in the way that they handled this situation.
Alvin quoted me a price for oil. When the delivery came in it was MORE than what she quoted. When I called her on it she fought me tooth and nail and said the price went up. When you quote someone a price then that's the price. You don't try and slide it by the customer then continue to battle with them tooth and nail about it when they call and try to work it out. Everyone else's price was moving down while there was moving up? I feel she tried to take advantage and hoped I wouldn't notice when the bill came. So needless to say I paid the whole bill at the price we originally rested on.
They signed me up for a contract prior to all of this. So at this point they delivered some expensive oil and came to my house for ten minutes.
After they couldnt stick to a price they quoted I decided I didn't want to do business with them. If you quote a price then that's the price. I do sales myself and if I give a price and then go back on it my customers will not have it.
Now they want me to pay $300. for someone to come into my house for 10 minutes.
I called to discuss and they hung up on me and sent me to a collection agency. So I have called a few times and tried to work this out and instead of talking they hung up on me.
So now in this time of crisis due to the virus they sent me to a collection agency. Times are tough and everyone is trying to keep afloat. This is an unnecessary issue that only compounds the shifting crazy world we are living in.
We hired Alvin Hollis to install a new gas boiler, central air conditioning and mini split unit. We selected them because of the thouroughness of their proposal and reviews. We were highly satisfied with the quality of their services. They showed up on time, communicated with us throughout the project, and their workmanship was excellent. We also grew to respect their expertise. I highly recommend Alvin Hollis.
No complaints. Great customer service, always pleasant and responsive when I called with a billing question. Deliveries always on time. Service techs were always polite, on time and knowledgeable. My only comment would be I wish they took credit cards for oil payments so I could get the credit card points. Overall I've had a great experience with Alvin Hollis.
We recently had a Mitsubishi split system installed in our three story circa 1870 home that we had been cooling with numerous window mounted AC units. Prior to the installation of the new split system, we had a number of questions and concerns including preserving the architectural character of our home as well as potential problems with how the electrical and refrigeration lines would be run. Jim Bicknell, who was our sales contact at Alvin Hollis, walked us though each step, offered great ideas and feedback and addressed our concerns. The team that showed up for installation was personable and very communicative during the entire process and discussed and offered great solutions to a couple of issues that came up during installation which were inevitable in an older house. Upon completion, they did a thorough clean up and helped us understand the operation of our new system and stayed until we were completely satisfied.
Overall, even though the Mitsubishi system came at a premium price point, we feel we received what we paid for and were extremely happy with communication and installation given us by Alvin Hollis.
I needed a furnace installed relatively quick at my elderly mom's house. Everybody I dealt with including Jim who came out to make recommendations on a new system, to Al and Jerry who installed the new unit, were courteous, prompt, and made sure questions were answered. Highly recommend Alvin Hollis.
