I am Scott Spencer, the owner of Affordable Plumbing and Heat, Inc. I have raised my four children while working in the plumbing industry for the past 15 years. Affordable Plumbing has been a family-owned business since 1995, and we uphold the same values from our humble beginnings. People seek VALUE, a quality service at a fair price. The plumbing industry often suffers from a poor reputation due to commissioned plumbers and flat-rate pricing. The enticing free estimate makes it difficult to refuse someone once they enter your home. We advocate for clear pricing on the phone, offering hourly rates for our plumbers. I personally promise to do everything we can to fulfill your expectations and create a pleasant experience for you.

My wife and I are working on attempt #4 with this company to finish a job that was never completed all the way. They have only been able to meet the time window once that was agreed on and all other times they ""got the time wrong"" or ""their previous appointment ran longer then expected with an emergency."" I understand if the company has short notice emergencies or something takes longer than expected but, for it to run through my entire appointment window without a courtesy call is unacceptable. I have had to take time out of work to wait for the technicians 4 times now and It will take days sometimes for someone to call me back. This is unprofessionalism at its best.

Horrible!Horrible! And no this is not just because I'm upset but this business is a disgrace. They charged $75 to just literally step into my house, take a picture and refuse service till I cleaned the wet area. No problem, I did so and they came back. The issue was quite simple: replace a half foot pipe with a dime size whole. The guy first looked at the whole for fifteen minutes than spent ridiculous amount of time texting and talking on the phone. I called his boss and told him that I don't have time for people who take hours to fix a simple problem and that he needs to tell his employee to leave cause I do not want any services from them. Before I finished the conversation the guy left slamming my door shut not saying a word to me. Than 10 minutes later he comes back, constantly ringing my door bell till I opened. He in a very rude manner gave me an ultimatum saying: "" you have two options, one you will take our services for $760 or you need to pay us $120 for diagnostics"". For diagnostics? Looking at the whole and not knowing or being equipped to cut a small peace of pipe is not diagnostics!
Warning for all out there: you do not want to deal with this company. They may have some technicians that are good and some that are horrible but bottom line their response to harass and demand money for absolutely no service preformed after a complaint is made and clear communication of no services wanted is just not acceptable by any business. If this is how they make their money I would stay away from them as far as possible. It is a shame that a simple everyday consumer like myself, a single mom of two, is not protected from this kind of businesses.

We recently had a major furnace, a/c, and humidifier installation. We had a late start because the team was dispatched to the wrong home causing me to receive an email that our project had been completed when they hadn't even come by to start. So, with that the team started 2 hours late but were very apologetic and rushed to get started as soon as they arrived.

While the team was very polite and efficient there were 1 few item that we'd ask more mindfulness surrounding. Smoking. The job we had was significant and during the course of the work we at 1 point had 6 technicians in our home. Every single one of them reeked of cigarette smoke. While their myriad of smoke breaks were outside, the smell was so strong when they came into my home, I might as well had been standing out there with them. The kicker was when my mother in law found a cigarette on our kitchen floor. I get it, it just fell out of their pocket but having a 2 year old, I am grateful my mother in law found it, and not my child.

On the positive side, the first day the technicians didn't leave our home until 10 PM and when I asked them to please stay quiet so our daughter could get to bed, they were EXTREMELY respectful and quiet. I was very appreciative.

We would use these guys again but I would probably see if I could request non smoking techs in the future.

We called about a leak in our ceiling, and Affordable adjusted their technician's schedule to respond to us same day. The problem turned out to be a leak in our upstairs toilet, which had dripped down and damaged our ceiling and drywall. The technician, who was friendly and professional, diagnosed the problem, and it was a simple, quick fix of tightening some bolts. Unfortunately, we were then told we owed $150. This is NOT what we were told when we hired Affordable over the phone. We were told by the office staff that there would be a $75 trip fee which would be refunded once the work was done. The technician told us this was not the case and we would have to pay the trip fee and $75 for the turning of some bolts. The latter was not unexpected considering that plumbers are among the highest paid technicians. However, the technician explained a complicated rationale for the $150: that Affordable was charging for a ""diagnostic"" fee we were not told about, which was in addition to any work that had to be done. Because the technician didn't consider that he'd actually made a repair, the trip fee would not be refunded and we would pay the diagnostic fee. We called the company to complain and were given a long, convoluted explanation by a manager that confirmed the technician's explanation. When we explained that we had NOT been told there would be a ""diagnostic"" fee, he would not refund the trip fee and allow us to simply pay the $75 for the ""non-repair"" the technician did. He said this arrangement was standard practice for ""any other plumber."" What is ""affordable,"" then, about Affordable Plumbing? The name of the company is misleading if they are no more affordable than any other plumber. We will not hire them again or recommend them to others.

Mike at Affordable was great. He was very courteous, timely, and patient explaining things to me. Another company sent out a tech, gave an estimate and then informed us that tech went on vacation and we would have to wait a week. Huh? Only one person can do it? Not an option for us as our hot water heater was already leaking! Mike with Affordable came in, told me what it needed and came back the next day completing the job in less than 2 hours! The only reason the rating is a 4 is it took some time and a few phone calls to the office to get the regional inspector here. Not sure if that was an issue in the office or at the county Regional Office. But I would use Affordable again based on the work and my experience with Mike.

On Friday December 16, 2016 in response to a complaint from a tenant in my 4plex apt. building I called Affordable Plumbing to repair the furnace. Michael Reeves responded and told me that a circulating pump was defective and to replace it would cost $510. The pump is attached by two bolts and replacement should take less than hour. I have since researched the price of the pump to be $150 so they must have been charging $360 labor. I asked the company to explain how they determined their charges and they flatly refused saying they did not divulge charges for parts and labor charging only by the job.
During the repair one of the two bolts broke. Mr. Reeves told me that the bolt could not be repaired and that I had to buy a new furnace. He sent me an estimate for replacement furnaces ranging from $11,000 to $15,000. I told him that I had four families without heat in subzero temperatures, that I would not buy a new furnace, and that the repair had to be done.
On Saturday December 17, 2016, Ray Martenson came and removed the broken bolt. He charged $400 to remove it plus the original $510 for a total of $910. After minor adjustments a final amount of $895 was charged to my credit card. On January 08, 2017 the company added an additional unauthorized charge of $210 to my credit card. On January 11, nearly a month after the work was done, I received an invoice stating that I owed $210 as payment for ""diagnostics"" that that were done on Friday December 16. That was when I was told that the furnace could not be repaired and I would have to replace it. None of the $360 labor was applied to the diagnostic charge since they claim they only charge by the job. The total charges to remove one bolt and install a $150 part are $1,115 and since I refused to pay the unauthorized credit charge I am being threatened with having the $210 charge turned over to a collection agency.
Affordable also gave me a list of estimates for repairs and maintenance to the furnace they had claimed could not be repaired and had to be replaced. Their estimate was $1,787. I had the work done by a well established plumbing company and the actual charges for the work were $357 for materials and three hours labor for a total of $662. They said that there is absolutely no reason for the furnace to be replaced. Affordable was estimating about $1,400 more than what the work actually cost.
Summary:
1) Affordable Plumbing charged $1,115 to replace a $150 part and remove one bolt.
Of that, $210 was a ""diagnostic"" fee to falsely tell me that I had to replace a furnace that did not require replacement. They are threatening to turn that fee over to a collection agency.
2) The company's exorbitant charges are demonstrated by their estimate of $1,115 versus the actual charges of $662 to do maintenance and repairs. The reason that they refuse to disclose and justify how they determine their charges is obvious.

I had an issue at 1am, sewage coming up shower. Called Affordable as advertised in telephone book as 24/7 hour emergency service. A lady answered phone and said she would have a manager contact me within 30 minutes or call back. Never got a call back so I called them back in 30 minutes. Was then told no one was responding to the messages and to call back in another 30 minutes. I said forget it. Dependability--zero.
