To be honest, it’s simple: go to Stanford, study Literature, and then continue to a graduate fellowship. Pursuing a PhD in liberal arts is the surest route to a career in the trades! I’ve been to the ivory tower, and now I find myself praying to the porcelain god.
Honestly, I think I ended up in plumbing because it’s gratifying work that requires a lot of patience—something I don’t always possess.
As a self-proclaimed 'recovering intellectual,' plumbing suits me well. Every day introduces fresh characters and challenges—from creating effective solutions to performing repairs, plumbing demands flexibility and a readiness to get messy—it’s a delicate balance, or perhaps an imbalance that fits me well.

Jellyfish Z.Terrible experience and terribly unprofessional.
We had a hairline crack in our sink and after discovering, our landlord wanted to replace the sink. Enter Andrew. He visited our home (which we'd lived in by 8 years at the point) with our landlord and looked at the sink, we heard him talking with the landlord and stating that ""it could have happened by something large dropping in the sink or something as small as a penny"" (we don't know when or how it occurred). Our landlord asked him when he could repair and he responded, ""just wait and kick them out. HAHAHA"" Things that aren't humorous include making a joke about kicking out tenants from what they consider their home.
Fast forward to him visiting to fix the sink; we had decided with the landlord that we'd pay out of pocket for the sink; Andrew arrived at 9 AM and left by 11:30 AM. He charged us $1,000 (see picture) and didn't breakdown the cost of service. Considering the sink bowl didn't cost more than $250 (I looked it up), he charged us $750 for 2.5 hrs of work. He really charged us $300/hr. for his work. To top it off, he left the bathroom a mess and used our PERSONAL towels for collecting the water and ceramic from the sink.
Unethical and unprofessional. Choose someone else.
We called Andrew to replace a leaking shut-off valve for our dishwasher in advance of having some work done by an appliance repair person. It was a quick simple repair and with time remaining in the hour Andrew suggested also upgrading the supply line to the dishwasher to flexible braided steel to make it easier for the appliance repair person to move the machine. Andrew was quick to respond to my inquiry and was able to find time in his schedule to come by and help us out on short notice. I can not speak highly enough of Andrew's enthusiasm, professionalism and skill. He is the only plumber we will call from now on.
Andrew responded to my call quickly, and when he found out I wanted to buy two new toilets quickly in order to take advantage of an EBMUD discount he helped me figure out what toilets I needed and then offered to go to the wholesaler and buy them for me (cheaper when he buys as a contractor).. and then he delivered, installed them and made sure I understood what paperwork I needed for the rebate! The rebate has arrived and the toilets are exactly what I wanted, (needed). This was the second time I called him and will not hesitate to call again when I need some plumbing!
I prayed to meet a ""dream plumber"" whom I can trust in his character and in his skills. And that wish came true today. I met Andrew! This is my story: My kitchen faucet leaked and needed to be replaced. My water line is still galvanized pipe that is 100 years old. When I attempted to do the work myself, I found the nipple adaptor's thread end was literally crumbling under my fingers. Since then I had two other people come out to assess the problem; I was given a worst possible scenario, enough to give you a nightmare, to a simple fix of replacing the nipple adaptor and a new faucet for $288 to $538. Two other plumbers didn't even call back. Then, I found Andrew!!! I feel so blessed to have him as my plumber from now on. His plumbing skills were pro level, his people skills are so right on, and his attention to details, for example scouring and cleaning up the wall around the pipe before he installed new faucet, taking shoes off before entering the house, and taking out the old faucet to recycle. He told me right off that his rate is $150 plus parts and that he can do it within an hour. He did just that, and it only cost me $160. Andrew restored my faith in people! He's the best.
The solo plumber from heaven. Showed up at 8:00 a.m. to fix one kitchen problem,
noticed and fixed another minor one (""I know that's annoying""), then volunteered to fix a leaky toilet I was going to do myself (""you're paying for an hour, and I haven't been here that long yet""), all the while smart, knowledgeable, energetic, engaged. Felt like getting twice our money's worth, and a personal pleasure to get to know.
andrew is great on many levels. He is a great plumbing architect when he designed and built the plumbing solutions on both our basement and kitchen. He also is a fantastic day to day problem solver and plumber. he is always available and willing to help at all hours of the day. Highly recommended
Jannik C.Have a state water heater. Probably called 12-15 places before Andrew...nobody fixed this brand or even knew what to do. With 20 minutes over the phone he knew exactly what the issue was, the part that was required, and where to get it. By the next morning we had hot water again, and couldn't be happier with the service and price. Highly recommended!
Andrew Carothers is now my Go-To Plumber of choice. I called. He picked up the phone. I described my problem. He suggested I send him a pic via text and he walked me thru the solution. I was off and running to the correct plumbing warehouse armed with the info I needed to get the parts on the first trip. I then went home and installed the necessary part to fix the problem! I give five stars because he gave me the information I needed and walked me thru the solution. He was recommended to me by my neighbor who received the same recommendation from her next door neighbor. So this 5 star rating is essentially reflecting 3 separate positive outcomes with Andrew Carothers.
Put a toilet in flawlessly Smart, friendly, helpful, reasonable. Not a big plumbing outfit with a fancy truck. Rates are fair. He's not cheap or expensive. He knows what he is doing. I now know I have a plumber in the family.
Jessica W.What a great find. Andrew was recommended to us by our friend Anthony Suega (a fantastic tile guy and general contractor). We had an emergency situation. I called Andrew, he picked up right away and came over later that evening.
Andrew is SMART (Stanford educated), an excellent plumber, fast, thorough, efficient, and professional. He came quickly because we had a situation that was potentially very dangerous involving a gas line. He came at 8:30 pm, crawled under the house, found the issue right away and it was done within an hour. The whole thing cost me $132 (vs. the $400+ quoted by Mr. Rooter of Oakland who also were unwilling to crawl under the house to find the problem.)
That's probably all you need to know because if you are looking for a plumber, look no further. And do not under an circumstances work with Mr. Rooter in Oakland (see my review of their business to get the full rant about why those guys are the worst.)
